Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

Everyone believed the danger had ended.

Grant was held without bail.

Parker was cooperating.

Rosie remained in custody.

The accounts were frozen.

Grace was gaining weight.

Mia was healing.

Then Lena Ward disappeared.

Again.

This time investigators knew it was not voluntary.

Her apartment had been searched.

A lamp broken.

Blood on the kitchen floor.

No Lena.

No phone.

No car.

Noah immediately suspected Grant’s remaining network.

Grant laughed when questioned.

“You still think everything begins with me.”

That sentence bothered Noah.

Because Grant had always treated people like tools.

Some of those tools had learned from him.

Adrian reviewed the case files.

One name appeared repeatedly but had received little attention.

Victor Crown.

Senior partner at Vale & Crown Legal Services.

The firm that drafted the petition intended to remove Mia from the baby’s trust.

Victor had worked beside Grant for thirty years.

He had approved shell companies.

Handled transfers.

Prepared blackmail settlements.

And somehow remained untouched.

Police went to his home.

Empty.

At the airport, his private jet had departed forty minutes earlier.

Destination unknown.

Lena’s phone signal briefly activated near the same airport.

Victor had taken her.

Why?

Because Lena still possessed one thing nobody else had.

Her mother’s copy of Daniel’s first ledger.

The original.

Victor needed it destroyed before trial.

Federal authorities tracked the aircraft.

It diverted to a rural landing strip due to mechanical problems.

Police surrounded it.

Lena was rescued alive.

Victor arrested.

The ledger recovered.

That should have been the end.

Then Lena told Noah something.

“Victor wasn’t trying to destroy the ledger.”

“What?”

“He wanted a page.”

“Which page?”

She opened the book.

One page had been cut out.

“What was on it?”

“I don’t know.”

Noah looked at the surrounding entries.

Dates.

Executive payments.

Insurance accounts.

Then one heading.

D.H. PERSONAL ESCROW.

Daniel Hale had maintained a private escrow account.

The missing page described it.

They traced the account.

Twenty million dollars remained untouched for eighteen years.

Beneficiary:

Lena Ward.

Noah stared at her.

His father had left money for his daughter.

Lena began crying.

Not because of the money.

Because Daniel had planned for her future.

Victor wanted the page because his law firm had secretly diverted part of the account after Daniel’s death.

Another theft.

Another betrayal.

But this one changed something important.

Grant’s empire had not been one conspiracy.

It had been dozens.

People saw him stealing and decided to steal too.

Corruption spread because everyone believed someone else had already ruined the rules.

Noah returned to Mia that evening.

“It’s over.”

She smiled.

“You’ve said that before.”

“I know.”

“So don’t say it.”

He laughed.

“What should I say?”

She looked toward Grace’s incubator.

“Say we’re here.”

Noah held her hand.

“We’re here.”

For the first time, that felt enough.

Then his phone rang.

The prosecutor.

Grant Vale had requested a meeting.

Not with Noah.

With Mia.

And he claimed he had information about Daniel’s death that nobody else knew.

Mia stared at the phone.

The trial had not even begun.

Grant was still trying to control the story.

But this time Mia understood him.

He did not fear prison as much as he feared irrelevance.

He needed one final audience.

She agreed.

May you like

Not because she believed him.

Because she wanted him to understand that his audience was no longer afraid.
