Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Grant was arrested.

But the case was not finished.

Not even close.

Powerful people had spent years protecting him.

Some denied everything.

Others hired armies of attorneys.

Several claimed Daniel had personally approved the financial transfers.

That argument died when Mia’s handwriting analysis helped forensic teams identify the forged signatures.

One by one, the structure began collapsing.

Elaine Parker testified.

Rosalie testified.

Adrian testified.

Scarlett testified.

Caleb testified.

Charles Wynn testified.

Each person supplied another piece.

Grant’s defense changed repeatedly.

First he claimed innocence.

Then ignorance.

Then Daniel had been responsible.

Then Adrian.

Then Scarlett.

Eventually, he blamed everyone except himself.

The forensic audit located $136 million in recoverable assets.

Properties were seized.

Accounts frozen.

Artwork confiscated.

The remaining losses would be covered through Hale Meridian reserves and insurance.

Noah publicly announced that no employee would lose retirement savings because of Grant’s crimes.

The company’s stock stabilized.

The board reinstated Noah.

He refused.

Not permanently.

But temporarily.

“I’m staying with my family.”

Reporters asked whether he was walking away.

“No.”

He looked directly at the cameras.

“I’m remembering what the company was supposed to exist for.”

He appointed an independent interim CEO.

Then returned to the hospital.

Mia smiled when he entered.

“Unemployed?”

“Temporarily.”

“Good.”

Their daughter had been named Grace Daniel Hale.

Daniel for Noah’s father.

Grace because, after everything, Mia refused to name their child after revenge.

One afternoon Scarlett requested a final meeting.

Mia went.

Scarlett wore a jail uniform.

No glamour remained.

“You named her Grace,” Scarlett said.

“Yes.”

Scarlett smiled sadly.

“Of course you did.”

Mia sat.

“The prosecutor says you’re pleading guilty.”

“Yes.”

“You could fight the assault charge.”

“I know.”

“Why aren’t you?”

Scarlett looked at her.

“Because I pushed you.”

No excuses.

No childhood.

No father.

No strategy.

Just responsibility.

Mia respected that more than any apology.

“I don’t forgive you.”

“I know.”

“I may never.”

“I know.”

Scarlett nodded.

“I didn’t ask you here for forgiveness.”

“Then why?”

“To give you this.”

She pushed an envelope across the table.

Inside was a photograph of Grant entering the Hale estate on the night Daniel died.

Timestamped.

And a second photograph.

Daniel alive fifteen minutes later.

Being supported by Elaine Parker.

Grant walking behind them.

The images proved Daniel survived the initial confrontation.

Meaning Grant and Parker had time to obtain medical help.

They chose not to.

Scarlett had hidden the photographs for eighteen years.

“Why keep them?”

“Insurance against my father.”

“Why give them now?”

Scarlett looked away.

“Because evidence hidden for selfish reasons is still hidden evidence.”

Mia stood.

At the door, Scarlett said:

“Is she beautiful?”

Mia stopped.

“Grace?”

Scarlett nodded.

Mia looked at her for a long moment.

Then answered:

“She looks furious all the time.”

Scarlett laughed.

A real laugh.

Maybe the first in years.

“Good.”

Mia left.

She did not forgive Scarlett.

May you like

But she no longer needed to hate her either.

Consequences would carry what hatred could not.
