Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN FROM THE PAST

“Daddy!”

The scream came from beneath the old manor.

Carmine moved before anyone else.

He sprinted toward the basement stairs.

Elena followed.

Leo stayed close behind her.

Carmine's father remained frozen in the center of the room.

“Wait!”

Carmine stopped halfway down.

He turned.

His father's face had gone completely white.

“You don't understand what you're walking into.”

Carmine's voice was ice.

“I've heard that sentence my entire life.”

Then he disappeared down the stairs.

The basement smelled of damp stone and old wood.

A single light swung from the ceiling.

At the far end stood a metal door.

Carmine heard someone crying behind it.

“Matteo!”

A voice answered.

“Daddy!”

Carmine reached the door.

It was locked.

He stepped back.

The bodyguard behind him raised his weapon.

“Move.”

One kick.

The lock broke.

The door flew open.

A boy was sitting on the floor.

His wrists were bound.

His face was bruised.

Carmine stopped.

The boy looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a second, neither moved.

Then Matteo whispered:

“Are you really my father?”

Carmine's throat tightened.

He knelt.

“Yes.”

Matteo stared at him.

“You look different.”

Carmine almost smiled.

“So do you.”

The boy's lips trembled.

“Leo?”

“He's here.”

“Is he okay?”

“Yes.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

“Thank God.”

Carmine cut the ropes.

Matteo immediately collapsed into his arms.

Carmine held him tightly.

Eight years.

Another child.

Another son.

Another lifetime stolen.

Then Elena entered.

Matteo looked at her.

“Mom?”

Elena froze.

She had not expected that word.

She rushed toward him.

“My baby.”

Matteo broke down.

Carmine stepped aside.

Mother and son held each other.

Leo appeared in the doorway.

He stared at Matteo.

Matteo looked back.

Neither spoke.

Then Leo whispered:

“Brother?”

Matteo nodded.

“Brother.”

The two boys slowly approached each other.

They looked almost identical.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same scar near the eyebrow.

Leo reached out.

Matteo took his hand.

“I thought I was alone.”

“So did I.”

They hugged.

Carmine turned away.

He couldn't let them see him cry.

But his father did.

The old man stood at the top of the stairs.

He looked at the two boys.

And whispered:

“It's over.”

Carmine turned.

“No.”

His father shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“You're right.”

Carmine walked toward him.

“I don't understand why you destroyed your own family.”

His father looked exhausted.

“I was trying to save it.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered Helena to hide Leo.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe Elena abandoned me.”

His father lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Carmine's voice cracked.

“Why?”

His father didn't answer.

“Why?”

“Because your life was in danger.”

“Then you should have trusted me.”

“I couldn't.”

“You should have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“You should have let me be their father.”

The old man closed his eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

Carmine stared.

“You lost me anyway.”

His father looked at him.

“I know.”

They returned upstairs.

The old manor was silent.

Elena sat with Matteo.

Leo stayed beside his brother.

Helena arrived twenty minutes later.

Carmine looked at her.

“You knew this place.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Matteo was here.”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't know if he was alive.”

Carmine nodded.

Then he turned to his father.

“Start from the beginning.”

His father sat down.

“I met Victor when we were young.”

“Raines.”

“Yes.”

“He wasn't always your enemy.”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Greed.”

His father stared at the floor.

“We built companies together. Then I discovered he was stealing from our accounts.”

“And you cut him out.”

“I tried.”

“But he retaliated.”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He threatened your mother.”

Carmine froze.

“My mother?”

“He wanted me to surrender the company.”

“And you refused.”

“Yes.”

“So he came after me.”

His father nodded.

“He knew you were the one thing I couldn't lose.”

Carmine's jaw tightened.

“Then why involve the children?”

“Because Elena was pregnant.”

Carmine looked at her.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

His father continued.

“Raines discovered she was carrying twins.”

Carmine stared.

“Twins.”

“Yes.”

“Why did he care?”

“Because of the trust.”

The old man explained.

“The trust was designed to protect the family fortune from outside control. But the trust had one vulnerability.”

“The firstborn.”

“Yes.”

“The firstborn controls it.”

“Eventually.”

Carmine looked at Leo.

“So Raines wanted Leo.”

“Yes.”

“Then why Matteo?”

“Because Matteo was the genetic confirmation.”

Carmine frowned.

His father continued.

“If someone tried to forge Leo's identity, Matteo's DNA would expose the fraud.”

Carmine understood.

“The brothers were safeguards for each other.”

“Yes.”

“And Raines wanted both.”

“Yes.”

Carmine looked at Elena.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Elena answered softly.

“Because your father told me if I contacted you, Raines would kill you.”

Carmine looked at his father.

“You used fear to control everyone.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my relationship with Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You made Leo believe he wasn't wanted.”

His father's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You separated twins.”

“I know.”

Carmine stepped closer.

“And you call that protection?”

His father lowered his head.

“No.”

For the first time, he sounded like an old man.

Not a powerful businessman.

Not a strategist.

Just a father who had made a terrible mistake.

“I called it protection because I couldn't admit it was control.”

Carmine said nothing.

Then Helena walked toward the table.

“There is something else.”

Everyone turned.

She placed a folder in front of Carmine.

“What is this?”

“Your father's original agreement with Raines.”

Carmine opened it.

The first page contained signatures.

His father's.

Raines's.

And another.

Carmine's eyes widened.

“Whose signature is that?”

Helena didn't answer.

Carmine looked closer.

He recognized it.

His mother's.

“She signed this?”

“Yes.”

“What did she agree to?”

Helena looked at him.

“To protect the children.”

Carmine read the document.

Then his face changed.

“No.”

Elena approached.

“What?”

Carmine handed her the page.

She read it.

Her eyes widened.

“This isn't my signature.”

Carmine looked at his father.

“Then whose is it?”

The old man remained silent.

Carmine's voice sharpened.

“Whose?”

His father whispered:

“Your mother's sister.”

Elena stared.

“I don't have a sister.”

The room went silent.

Carmine looked at her.

“What?”

“I don't have a sister.”

His father stood.

“You did.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“She died when you were young.”

“I was an only child.”

“That's what you were told.”

Elena stared.

The old man continued:

“Her name was Sofia.”

Elena's face went blank.

“That isn't possible.”

“She survived.”

“Where is she?”

His father looked toward the window.

“She became Victor Raines's wife.”

Silence.

Carmine understood.

The conspiracy was no longer about business.

It was family.

Raines wasn't simply connected to them.

He had married into Elena's bloodline.

Elena whispered:

“My sister is alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

His father looked at Carmine.

“She is the person who has been helping Raines.”

Carmine's blood ran cold.

Later that night, Elena sat alone.

Carmine found her in the hallway.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He sat beside her.

“You're allowed not to be.”

She looked at him.

“I spent eight years thinking my family was dead.”

“And now?”

“Now I don't know who my family is.”

Carmine took her hand.

“You know Leo.”

She nodded.

“You know Matteo.”

She nodded again.

“And you know me.”

She looked at him.

“I never stopped.”

“Neither did I.”

For a moment, the years between them disappeared.

Then Elena whispered:

“Carmine.”

“What?”

“There's something I never told you.”

He waited.

“The night Leo and Matteo were born…”

She looked away.

“I wasn't alone.”

Carmine's expression changed.

“Who was with you?”

“Sofia.”

“Your sister?”

“Yes.”

“She came to the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

Elena's voice trembled.

“She took one of the babies.”

Carmine froze.

“Which one?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

Carmine stood.

“What?”

“I woke up after surgery.”

“One baby was gone?”

“Yes.”

“Which one?”

“I couldn't tell.”

Carmine stared.

“Then how do we know Leo is Leo?”

Elena shook her head.

“We don't.”

Carmine's entire body went still.

Behind them, Leo and Matteo were sleeping in adjoining rooms.

Two boys.

One identity.

One truth.

And suddenly, Carmine didn't know which child had been born first.

Then his father's voice came from the doorway.

“You've finally reached the real secret.”

Carmine turned.

His father held an old hospital record.

“The babies were switched.”

Carmine stared.

“By whom?”

His father looked toward Elena.

“Sofia.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“No…”

Her father continued:

“She switched the twins before the birth records were created.”

Carmine's voice was barely audible.

“Why?”

His father whispered:

“Because one of the boys wasn't yours.”

Silence.

Carmine stared.

Elena shook her head.

“That isn't true.”

His father looked at her.

“It is.”

Carmine felt the floor disappear beneath him.

“What are you saying?”

His father opened the final page.

A DNA report.

Carmine's name.

Elena's name.

Leo's.

Matteo's.

One result was marked:

PATERNITY CONFIRMED.

The other:

PATERNITY EXCLUDED.

Carmine stared at the page.

Then at the sleeping boys.

His father whispered:

May you like

“Only one of them is your biological son.”

And somewhere downstairs, a door quietly opened.
