Chapter 14 - SUBJECT ZERO

Carmine returned to the hospital before sunrise.
His father was awake.
The old man looked at him.
“You found Matteo.”
“Yes.”
“And Leo?”
“Safe.”
His father closed his eyes.
“Good.”
Carmine placed the Project Orion file on the bed.
“Tell me about Subject Zero.”
His father's face changed.
For the first time, Carmine saw genuine fear.
“Where did you get that?”
“From Mom.”
His father stared at the file.
“She shouldn't have shown you.”
“Who is Subject Zero?”
Silence.
Carmine leaned closer.
“Dad.”
The old man finally whispered:
“You.”
Carmine froze.
“What?”
“You were Subject Zero.”
Carmine stepped back.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does.”
“You said the project was about the twins.”
“No.”
His father shook his head.
“The twins were Phase Two.”
“What was Phase One?”
“You.”
Carmine stared.
His father continued.
“You were born with a rare genetic marker.”
“What marker?”
“One connected to the trust.”
Carmine frowned.
“My DNA?”
“Yes.”
“The trust was created because of me?”
“No.”
His father took a breath.
“The trust was created to protect you.”
Carmine's expression changed.
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
His father explained.
“When you were seventeen, Raines discovered the genetic marker.”
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“He wanted my DNA?”
“He wanted access to the trust.”
Carmine looked at the file.
“Then why were Leo and Matteo involved?”
“Because the marker passed to the next generation.”
Carmine's eyes widened.
“Which means…”
“Both boys could carry it.”
“Could?”
His father looked away.
“One did.”
Carmine's heart sank.
“Which one?”
His father whispered:
“Leo.”
Silence.
Carmine stared.
“Leo.”
“Yes.”
“And Matteo?”
“He doesn't carry it.”
Carmine understood.
“That is why Raines wanted Leo.”
“Yes.”
“But Matteo was his son.”
“Raines believed Matteo could be used to identify Leo.”
“Why?”
“Because Sofia had switched the twins.”
Carmine's voice hardened.
“And you knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Leo was the one with the marker.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you let me believe Matteo was my biological son?”
His father looked at him.
“Because blood wasn't the important part.”
Carmine shook his head.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“Then why did you hide Leo?”
“Because I knew the moment you recognized him, Raines would know too.”
Carmine stared at his father.
“You made me reject my own son to protect him.”
“I made you unknowingly protect him.”
Carmine looked away.
The pain was overwhelming.
Then the hospital door opened.
Elena entered.
She looked at Carmine.
“Leo wants you.”
Carmine nodded.
“I'll go.”
Before he left, his father grabbed his wrist.
“Carmine.”
He turned.
“There's one more thing.”
“What?”
“Subject Zero isn't just a genetic marker.”
“Then what is it?”
His father whispered:
“It is a key.”
“To what?”
“The original trust.”
Carmine froze.
“How?”
“Your grandfather created a vault.”
“A vault?”
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
His father looked terrified.
“The evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Everything.”
Carmine's eyes narrowed.
“Everything?”
“Every crime.”
“Every secret.”
“Every person involved.”
“Raines?”
“Yes.”
“Yourself?”
His father nodded.
“Yes.”
Carmine stared.
“Then why haven't you opened it?”
“Because I can't.”
“Why?”
“Only Subject Zero can.”
Carmine understood.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“And where is this vault?”
His father smiled sadly.
“Under the original estate.”
Carmine froze.
“The mansion?”
“Yes.”
Back at the estate, Carmine found Leo sitting on the stairs.
The boy looked up.
“Daddy.”
Carmine knelt.
“You okay?”
Leo nodded.
“Is Matteo okay?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“Upstairs.”
Leo smiled.
Then his expression changed.
“Daddy?”
“What?”
“Am I really your son?”
Carmine didn't hesitate.
“Yes.”
“Even if I'm not your blood?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Carmine touched his face.
“Because you chose me.”
Leo smiled.
“I did?”
“You called me Daddy.”
Leo's eyes filled.
“And you answered.”
Carmine pulled him into a hug.
“I'll always answer.”
From the doorway, Elena watched them.
She smiled through tears.
Then Matteo appeared.
“Can I join?”
Leo laughed.
“Of course.”
Both boys climbed into Carmine's arms.
For a moment, everything was peaceful.
Then the lights flickered.
A hidden panel opened behind the fireplace.
Carmine turned.
His mother stood there.
“The vault.”
Carmine approached.
A biometric scanner appeared.
His mother looked at him.
“Your hand.”
Carmine placed his palm against it.
The system scanned his DNA.
SUBJECT ZERO CONFIRMED.
The wall opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Carmine looked at Elena.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
He looked at both boys.
“Keep them safe.”
Elena nodded.
Carmine and his mother descended.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Carmine placed his hand against it.
The door opened.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Bank accounts.
Contracts.
And a single locked box.
His mother whispered:
“That is the truth.”
Carmine opened it.
Inside was a letter from his grandfather.
He read it.
Carmine,
If you are reading this, then everything I feared has happened.
Your father will tell you that he acted to protect you.
He is partly right.
But he will not tell you the whole truth.
Carmine continued.
The twins were never the final heirs.
His heart stopped.
They were safeguards.
The true heir was always Subject Zero.
Carmine stared.
The letter continued.
The empire was never meant to belong to you.
It was meant to belong to the children you would one day choose to protect.
Carmine looked at his mother.
“What does that mean?”
She didn't answer.
He continued reading.
If you choose blood over love, the trust will collapse.
If you choose love over blood, the trust will transfer to both children equally.
Carmine's eyes widened.
His grandfather had designed everything around one test.
Not DNA.
Not birth order.
Choice.
Carmine had already passed it.
Then he found the final page.
A list of names.
People involved in Project Orion.
Raines.
Daniel.
Sofia.
His father.
And one final name.
Carmine's mother.
He looked at her.
“You were involved.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I helped create the project.”
Carmine's face hardened.
“You manipulated me too.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather wanted to know whether you would become like him.”
Carmine stared.
“Like him?”
“A man who believed power mattered more than people.”
She stepped closer.
“You had to choose.”
“I chose Leo.”
“And Matteo.”
Carmine nodded.
“Both.”
His mother smiled.
“Then the project is complete.”
The lights suddenly came on.
A hidden screen activated.
His grandfather appeared in an old recording.
“Carmine.”
Carmine froze.
“If you're seeing this, you've made your choice.”
The recording continued.
“You saved both boys.”
A pause.
“Now you must decide what happens to the empire.”
Carmine stared.
His grandfather smiled.
“Destroy it.”
The screen went black.
Carmine stood motionless.
His mother looked at him.
“What will you do?”
Carmine looked toward the stairs.
At the boys.
At Elena.
At the family he had nearly lost.
Then he closed the vault.
“I know exactly what I'll do.”
The next morning, Carmine called an emergency meeting of every board member.
Every executive.
Every shareholder.
Every person connected to the company.
They expected a war.
They expected revenge.
Instead, Carmine walked onto the stage with Leo and Matteo beside him.
He placed the Project Orion files on the table.
“I built my life believing an empire was something you protected.”
He looked at the audience.
“I was wrong.”
Then he opened the files.
“For eight years, my family was destroyed because people believed power mattered more than children.”
The room went silent.
“Today, that ends.”
He signed the first document.
Then another.
And another.
He transferred control of the trust.
Not to himself.
Not to his father.
Not to Raines.
To an independent foundation created for the boys.
The empire would continue.
But no single person would ever control it again.
The board erupted.
Carmine didn't care.
He walked away.
Elena followed.
“You really gave it all up.”
“No.”
He looked at the boys.
“I gave them a future.”
Then his phone rang.
A message appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO: FINAL PHASE COMPLETE.
Carmine smiled.
For the first time in years—
the past was finally behind them.
Or so he thought.
Because the final line on the screen read:
May you like
ONE FILE REMAINS.
ELENA.
