Chapter 12 - THE MOTHER WHO NEVER DIED

Carmine couldn't move.

His mother stood beyond the gates.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably herself.

Beside her stood Leo and Matteo.

Both boys were safe.

Both were looking at her.

Carmine's voice broke.

“Mom?”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Carmine.”

He stepped outside.

The guards immediately surrounded him.

“Don't.”

His mother raised one hand.

“They won't hurt me.”

Carmine stared.

“Where have you been?”

“Waiting.”

“For eight years?”

“For you.”

Carmine's eyes filled with tears.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let Dad believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let Elena suffer.”

“Yes.”

“You let my children disappear.”

Her expression changed.

“I saved them.”

Carmine pointed toward the boys.

“From what?”

“From the truth.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

His mother looked at him.

“Because the truth destroys people.”

“I want it.”

“You're not ready.”

“I've never been more ready.”

She studied him.

Then looked toward Leo.

“Come here.”

Leo hesitated.

Carmine looked at him.

“It's okay.”

Leo walked toward the woman.

She knelt.

She touched his face.

“You look just like your father.”

Leo frowned.

“Which one?”

His mother looked at Carmine.

“That is the question.”

Carmine's expression hardened.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Which child is mine?”

She stood.

“You still think biology is the answer.”

“It matters.”

“It matters to your father.”

Carmine shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became firm.

“It matters to me because I need to know who is in danger.”

His mother nodded.

“Then listen carefully.”

She looked at both boys.

“Both of them are your children.”

Carmine froze.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

“How?”

“Because one is your biological son.”

She looked at Leo.

“And one is your son by choice.”

She looked at Matteo.

Carmine stared.

“You're saying…”

“Yes.”

“Matteo is mine.”

“Yes.”

“And Leo?”

“Not by blood.”

Leo's face fell.

Carmine immediately dropped to his knees.

“Leo.”

The boy looked at him.

“Am I not your son?”

Carmine pulled him into his arms.

“You are my son.”

“But I'm not your real son.”

Carmine held him tighter.

“You don't get to decide what real means.”

Leo began crying.

Carmine whispered:

“You are my son because I chose you.”

Leo looked up.

“Even if I'm not your blood?”

“Especially then.”

Matteo stood nearby.

His eyes filled with tears.

Carmine reached for him.

“You too.”

Matteo approached.

Carmine pulled both boys into his arms.

“My sons.”

His mother watched silently.

Then she whispered:

“That's the answer I was hoping you'd give.”

Carmine looked up.

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You tested me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed to know what kind of father you would become.”

Carmine stood.

“You had no right.”

“No.”

She lowered her head.

“I didn't.”

They entered the mansion.

Elena was waiting.

The moment she saw the woman, she froze.

“You.”

Carmine turned.

“You know her?”

Elena nodded.

“She saved me.”

Carmine looked between them.

“How?”

Elena spoke slowly.

“Your mother helped me escape the hospital.”

Carmine's mother nodded.

“Raines wanted the twins.”

“He knew about them?”

“Yes.”

“And Sofia?”

“She was working for him.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Carmine looked at her.

“What?”

“Sofia was pretending to work for Raines.”

Carmine's mother nodded.

“She was trying to protect Matteo.”

Carmine frowned.

“Then who was the real enemy?”

His mother looked toward the hallway.

“Your father.”

Carmine's face hardened.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“But he was trying to protect us.”

“He believed he was.”

“Explain.”

His mother sat down.

“Your father created Project Orion.”

“We know.”

“He created it because he wanted absolute control over the family fortune.”

Carmine stared.

“He used the children.”

“Yes.”

“He knew Sofia would switch them.”

“Yes.”

“He allowed it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed the confusion would make the trust impossible to challenge.”

Carmine slowly understood.

“If nobody knew which child was the firstborn…”

“The trust could not be activated.”

“And he would keep control.”

“Yes.”

Carmine looked toward his father upstairs.

“He destroyed everything for money.”

His mother shook her head.

“Not money.”

“What then?”

“Power.”

A guard entered.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We intercepted a transmission.”

“From Raines?”

“No.”

“Who?”

The guard handed him a tablet.

A distorted voice played.

“Carmine.”

He recognized it.

His father's voice.

But his father was upstairs.

The recording continued.

“You've found your mother.”

Carmine stared.

“This was recorded today.”

His mother stood.

“No.”

The voice continued:

“You believe the children are safe.”

Carmine's expression changed.

“They aren't.”

A photograph appeared.

The estate.

Taken from outside.

The boys were visible through a window.

Someone had been watching them.

The message continued:

“You think Victor Raines is the enemy.”

A pause.

“He never was.”

Carmine's blood ran cold.

The recording ended.

His mother whispered:

“Your father has a second plan.”

“What?”

“The trust.”

Carmine turned.

“What about it?”

“It has already been activated.”

“By whom?”

She looked at Leo.

“By him.”

Carmine stared.

“How?”

“Because the trust doesn't recognize DNA.”

His mother smiled sadly.

“It recognizes choice.”

Carmine froze.

“What?”

“The original clause was changed.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

Carmine looked at Leo.

“He made the firstborn irrelevant.”

“Yes.”

“Then what activates the trust?”

His mother answered:

“The child whom the father publicly recognizes as his heir.”

Carmine's eyes widened.

“So…”

“You have already activated it.”

Carmine understood.

By choosing Leo.

By publicly calling him his son.

By refusing to abandon him.

He had unknowingly triggered the trust.

And that meant someone now controlled the entire fortune.

Carmine's phone buzzed.

A notification appeared.

PROJECT ORION — TRUST ACTIVATED.

Below it:

PRIMARY HEIR: LEO MORETTI.

Carmine stared.

Then another line appeared.

SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: MATTEO MORETTI.

Carmine looked at his mother.

“What happens now?”

Her expression became grim.

“Now everyone who wants that fortune will come for your sons.”

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Glass shattered upstairs.

A guard shouted:

“INTRUDERS!”

Carmine grabbed Leo.

Elena pulled Matteo behind her.

His mother stood perfectly still.

“Mom!”

She looked at Carmine.

“Take the boys downstairs.”

“What are you going to do?”

She smiled.

“What I should have done eight years ago.”

She pulled a hidden weapon from beneath her coat.

Carmine stared.

“You know how to use that?”

She looked toward the dark hallway.

“I learned because your father taught me.”

Gunfire erupted.

The guards returned fire.

Carmine dragged the boys toward the basement.

“Stay behind me!”

Leo held his hand.

Matteo held Elena's.

They reached the hidden room.

Carmine locked the steel door.

Then he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was walking down the stairs.

Carmine raised his weapon.

A voice came from the darkness.

“You chose the wrong child.”

Carmine froze.

The voice belonged to Victor Raines.

He stepped into the light.

But he wasn't alone.

His father stood beside him.

Alive.

Holding a gun.

Carmine stared in disbelief.

His father smiled.

“You finally activated the trust.”

Carmine's expression hardened.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His father looked at Leo.

“Because he is the key.”

Carmine tightened his grip.

“You're not taking him.”

His father shook his head.

“I don't need to.”

He looked at Matteo.

“I need the other one.”

Matteo froze.

Raines stepped forward.

“Because Matteo knows the truth.”

Carmine moved between them.

“You'll have to go through me.”

His father smiled.

“That was always the plan.”

Then the steel door behind Carmine opened by itself.

He turned.

Sofia stood there.

She looked at the boys.

Then at Raines.

Then at Carmine.

And whispered:

“Run.”

A gunshot exploded.

The room plunged into chaos.

And when the smoke cleared—

one of the boys was gone.
