Chapter 11 - THE BOY HE CHOSE

Carmine dropped to his knees beside his father.
“Dad!”
The old man's eyes opened.
Blood soaked through his shirt.
But he was still conscious.
“Don't…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
Carmine pressed his hand against the wound.
“Stay with me.”
His father looked at him.
“Leo…”
“Leo is safe.”
“No.”
His father's fingers closed around Carmine's wrist.
“Listen to me.”
Carmine leaned closer.
“Where are the boys?”
His father struggled to breathe.
“Sofia has them.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Carmine's face hardened.
“You're lying.”
“I swear…”
Another gunshot rang through the station.
Everyone ducked.
Raines's men were still outside.
Carmine looked toward the entrance.
His security team returned fire.
His father grabbed him again.
“Carmine.”
“What?”
“You have to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Blood… or love.”
Carmine stared at him.
His father whispered:
“That's what your mother chose.”
Then his eyes closed.
“Dad!”
The paramedics rushed in.
Carmine stood.
His hands were covered in blood.
Elena stared at him.
“He'll survive.”
“How do you know?”
“I don't.”
Carmine looked toward the darkness.
Raines had disappeared.
But he had left one message behind.
BRING ME LEO.
Carmine's jaw tightened.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“I won't give him Leo.”
“But Matteo…”
“I'll find both.”
“How?”
Carmine turned toward Daniel.
“You said Sofia has them.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then we'll find Sofia.”
Three hours later, Carmine sat inside the command room at the estate.
Maps covered the table.
Security footage played across six screens.
Daniel stood opposite him.
“She won't use a phone.”
“Then track her movements.”
“We've tried.”
“Try harder.”
“She knows our systems.”
“Then shut down the systems.”
Daniel stared.
“All of them?”
“All.”
The screens went black.
Carmine pointed to a map.
“Where was Sofia last seen?”
“North district.”
“Before that?”
“St. Vincent's.”
Carmine looked up.
“The hospital.”
Daniel nodded.
“She returned there two days ago.”
“Why?”
“We don't know.”
Carmine stood.
“Then we're going.”
Elena stepped forward.
“I'll come.”
“No.”
“She has my sons.”
“Exactly.”
Elena stared at him.
“They're my children.”
“And you're exactly who she expects.”
Elena's eyes filled.
“Carmine…”
He softened.
“I need you here.”
“No.”
“Please.”
She looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Elena nodded.
“Bring them back.”
“I will.”
The hospital had been abandoned for years.
The maternity wing was sealed.
Carmine entered through a side door.
Daniel followed.
They found Sofia's trail almost immediately.
A single white ribbon.
Then another.
Then another.
Each one tied to a door handle.
Carmine stopped.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked at it.
“A trail.”
“Why leave one?”
“Because she wants us to follow.”
Carmine continued.
The trail led to the old nursery.
Inside were two empty cribs.
Carmine froze.
He remembered the photograph.
Two babies.
Two blankets.
Two lives.
On the wall was a message written in black ink.
YOU HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE WRONG BOY.
Carmine stared.
Daniel whispered:
“She's trying to break you.”
Carmine stepped closer.
“She's mistaken.”
“About what?”
“I don't love one of them.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I love both.”
A sound came from behind the wall.
A child's voice.
“Daddy?”
Carmine spun around.
“Leo?”
He rushed toward the sound.
But the room was empty.
A speaker crackled.
Sofia's voice came through.
“You came.”
Carmine looked around.
“Where are my children?”
“Safe.”
“Let me speak to them.”
“No.”
“Then you'll hear from my lawyers.”
She laughed softly.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What is it about?”
“Family.”
Carmine's expression hardened.
“You kidnapped my sons.”
“I saved them.”
“From whom?”
“From you.”
Carmine clenched his fists.
“You're insane.”
“No.”
Sofia's voice became cold.
“I am the only person who understands what your father did.”
“Then tell me.”
“He created a family where children were treated like assets.”
Carmine said nothing.
“He assigned value to blood.”
She continued.
“He decided one child would inherit everything and the other would become a backup.”
Carmine's eyes narrowed.
“He did no such thing.”
“He did.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed blood was destiny.”
Carmine looked at the two empty cribs.
“And you?”
“I believe love is destiny.”
Silence.
Then Sofia said:
“That's why I switched them.”
Carmine froze.
“You admit it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Raines was going to take Matteo.”
“Your husband.”
“Yes.”
“And Leo?”
“I gave him to Raines without knowing.”
Carmine's expression changed.
“You switched them to save Matteo.”
“Yes.”
“But Leo became a target.”
“I didn't know.”
“You didn't know Raines would hunt him?”
“No.”
“You're lying.”
Sofia's voice cracked.
“I thought he would recognize his own son.”
Carmine stopped.
“You thought Raines would recognize Leo?”
“Yes.”
“But he didn't.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because he had never seen him.”
Carmine understood.
Raines believed Leo was Carmine's son.
He had been hunting the wrong child.
All because Sofia had switched them.
Then Carmine heard another voice.
Matteo.
“Daddy!”
Carmine stepped toward the speaker.
“Matteo!”
“Daddy, don't listen to her!”
Sofia shouted:
“Enough!”
The line went silent.
Carmine's face hardened.
“You hurt him.”
“No.”
“You threatened him.”
“No.”
“Then let him go.”
“I will.”
“When?”
“When you understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That Leo is not the only child you have to protect.”
Carmine froze.
“What does that mean?”
Sofia whispered:
“Raines isn't coming for Leo anymore.”
“Then who?”
“Someone much worse.”
The speaker clicked off.
Daniel looked at Carmine.
“Who could be worse than Raines?”
Carmine didn't answer.
He was looking at the old photograph.
At the two babies.
At the woman standing behind them.
And suddenly he noticed something.
Sofia wasn't looking at the children.
She was looking at the camera.
As if someone else was taking the photograph.
Someone standing behind her.
Someone she feared.
Carmine zoomed in.
A reflection appeared in the nursery window.
A man.
Tall.
Wearing a dark suit.
His face was barely visible.
But Carmine recognized him.
His own father.
The photograph had been taken before the twins disappeared.
Yet his father was supposed to be somewhere else that night.
Carmine whispered:
“He was there.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
“My father.”
They returned to the estate.
Carmine went directly to the hospital room.
His father was awake.
Weak.
Connected to machines.
Carmine entered alone.
“You were there.”
His father looked at him.
“Where?”
“The hospital.”
Silence.
“Eight years ago.”
His father closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You watched Sofia switch the babies.”
“Yes.”
“You let it happen.”
“Yes.”
Carmine's voice trembled.
“Why?”
“Because I believed it would save both children.”
“You knew what she was doing.”
“Yes.”
“You let my son grow up thinking he wasn't wanted.”
“I thought you would eventually find him.”
“You knew where Leo was?”
“No.”
“But you knew he was alive.”
“Yes.”
Carmine's eyes filled.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
His father whispered:
“Because Raines was watching you.”
Carmine shook his head.
“You keep using him as an excuse.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Raines?”
“No.”
His father looked directly at him.
“Of Sofia.”
Carmine froze.
“Why?”
“Because she wasn't working alone.”
“With Raines?”
“No.”
“With whom?”
His father hesitated.
Then:
“With your mother.”
Carmine stared.
“My mother died.”
“I know.”
“She died before the twins were born.”
His father shook his head.
“She didn't.”
Carmine felt the blood leave his face.
“What?”
“Your mother was alive when Leo and Matteo were born.”
“That is impossible.”
“She was there.”
“Where is she now?”
His father looked toward the window.
“She is the reason Raines became who he is.”
Carmine's voice became a whisper.
“Where is my mother?”
His father closed his eyes.
“She has been hiding in plain sight.”
At that exact moment, a car stopped outside the estate.
A woman stepped out.
Gray hair.
Elegant black coat.
She walked through the gates without resistance.
The guards lowered their weapons.
Carmine's phone rang.
A single message appeared:
LOOK OUTSIDE.
He walked toward the window.
His heart stopped.
The woman looked up.
Their eyes met.
Carmine dropped the phone.
“Mom?”
The woman smiled.
And behind her stood Leo and Matteo.
Both alive.
Both unharmed.
But neither boy was looking at Carmine.
They were staring at the woman.
May you like
As if they knew her.
As if they had been waiting for her.
