They stopped arguing after that.

Not because they understood each other—but because something between them had shifted.

Silence replaced conversation.

Maya returned to her apartment more often, sitting by the Hudson River again, trying to remember who she was before him. But even the river felt different now, as if it had learned his name and refused to forget it.

Liam, meanwhile, began submitting modification requests to the city.

Extra reinforcements. Structural reassessments. Emergency contingency redesigns.

One evening, Maya confronted him.

“You’re trying to rebuild a building that doesn’t need rebuilding.”

Liam’s voice was quiet. “I’m trying to make sure nothing dies again.”

“And what about us?” she asked before she could stop herself.

That question hung between them.
