Part 1 â The Silence After Completion

The City That Didnât Wait
Part 1 â The Silence After Completion
After opening day, the library didnât feel like a finished project.
It felt like a held breath finally released.
Maya kept expecting things to return to how they were before Liamâquiet mornings, predictable deadlines, a life she could organize into clean margins. But instead, everything felt slightly⊠misaligned, like a book placed back on the shelf in the wrong order.
Liam, too, had become harder to read.
He spent more time alone at the site, even after construction was officially complete. Sometimes Maya found him standing in the atrium, looking up at the glass ceiling as if waiting for it to confess something.
âYouâre done,â she told him one evening.
He didnât look at her. âBuildings are never really done.â
âBut this one is.â
That finally made him turn. His expression was unreadable.

âIs it?â
The question stayed with her longer than she wanted it to.
