Two weeks later, their apartment wasn't perfect.
Boxes still lined the hallway.
The dining table doubled as a baby-clothes folding station.
The kitchen was tiny.
But every dirty dish belonged to the people who had actually used it.
Daniel cooked dinner every evening after work.
Emily protested at first.
"You've worked all day."
He smiled.
"So have you."
They laughed more.
Talked more.
Slept better.
One rainy afternoon, labor began.
Daniel never left her side.
Hours later, a tiny cry filled the hospital room.
Their son wrapped his fingers around Daniel's thumb.
Emily whispered through happy tears,
"He's beautiful."
