Chapter 3 – Leaving Home

The next morning, Daniel rented a moving truck.

His mother stood on the porch with crossed arms.

"You'd leave your own family?"

Daniel carried another box outside.

"No."

"I'm protecting mine."

Inside the house, Emily carefully packed baby clothes she'd bought months earlier.

Most were still in shopping bags.

She had never found time to decorate the nursery.

There was always another meal to cook.

Another mess to clean.

Another family gathering to prepare.

Neighbors watched as furniture was loaded into the truck.

Margaret expected Daniel to apologize before driving away.

Instead, he walked back one final time.

He placed a house key on the hallway table.

"I hope one day you realize what you've done."

Then he closed the door behind him.
