Chapter 1 – The Silence Ends

Chapter 1 – The Silence Ends
The television kept playing.
No one reached for the remote.
No one even looked away from the screen until the sharp sound of Daniel's briefcase hitting the hardwood floor echoed through the house.
His mother glanced over first.
"Oh, you're home," she said casually. "Dinner's in the microwave."
Daniel didn't answer.
His eyes never left Emily.
She was still standing at the sink, shoulders trembling beneath her damp T-shirt, one hand supporting the weight of her swollen belly while the other struggled to scrub another greasy pan.
He walked over quietly and took the sponge from her hand.
"You don't have to do this anymore."
Emily shook her head.
"It's okay."
"No."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"It isn't."
He turned off the faucet.
Water dripped into the sink, each drop sounding louder than the television.
Then he slowly faced the living room.
His mother, Margaret, sighed dramatically.
"Oh, don't start."
His younger cousin barely looked up from his phone.
"They're just dishes."
Daniel stared at him.
"No."
He pointed toward the overflowing sink.
"They're not dishes."
"They're eight months of expecting my pregnant wife to clean up after five healthy adults."
Silence.
Margaret folded her arms.
"We've all been helping around here."
Daniel looked back at the kitchen.
"Really?"
He walked to the trash can and pulled out disposable food containers.
Five.
Then soda cans.
Four.
Paper plates stacked beneath them.
"You all ate dinner."
He looked at Emily.
"What did you eat?"
She hesitated.
"I... wasn't hungry."
Daniel knew that answer.
It was the answer people gave when they didn't want anyone to know they'd skipped another meal.
Something inside him snapped.
He walked into the living room, picked up the television remote, and pressed the power button.
The room instantly fell silent.
Every eye turned toward him.
"If anyone wants this television back on..."
He placed the remote in his pocket.
"...they can start by cleaning this kitchen."
No one moved.
Not one person.
For the first time in years, Daniel realized something.
His family had never expected resistance.
May you like
Only obedience.
Tonight, they got neither.
