Chapter 16 - THE SONG CLAIRE NEVER FINISHED

Arthur sat beside Claire’s hospital bed.
Machines breathed softly around her.
She had suffered a seizure.
Doctors believed it was temporary.
But she could not help them.
Jonathan stood near the window.
“I lost them twice.”
Arthur looked at him.
“No.”
“I wasn’t there the first time.”
“You were kidnapped.”
“And now?”
Arthur had no answer.
Then Maya’s old pendant caught his eye.
Half of Claire’s ring.
A memory returned.
Their mother used to sing while teaching Arthur and Claire piano.
One particular song.
Claire changed the final lyrics as a child.
Arthur had forgotten them.
Under the place where Mother taught us not to lie.
The reading bench.
The wall.
The evidence.
Claire encoded memories in childhood references.
Arthur looked at her.
“What song?”
Jonathan frowned.
Arthur explained.
“If Daniel needs somewhere Claire would remember, he might use something from her old codes.”
Claire’s fingers moved.
Barely.
Arthur leaned closer.
“Claire?”
Her lips moved.
No sound.
Then:
“Blue…”
“What?”
“Blue…bird…”
Arthur froze.
The Bluebird.
An old Bennett family riverboat.
Decommissioned thirty years earlier.
Arthur and Claire played on it as children.
Charles stored it in a private boathouse.
Daniel knew.
Because Daniel handled the property paperwork.
Arthur called federal agents.
The Bluebird remained registered to a dormant Bennett subsidiary.
GPS tracker inactive.
But fuel purchases had occurred that morning.
They raced toward the river.
The boathouse was empty.
The boat gone.
River patrol located it twenty miles downstream.
Moving toward international shipping lanes.
Arthur joined the Coast Guard command center.
Thermal imaging showed four people onboard.
Daniel.
Maya.
Noah.
And Caleb Rusk.
Caleb had escaped custody weeks earlier through a corrupt transport officer.
Daniel had reunited the remaining pieces of Richard’s network.
They prepared interception.
Then Daniel called Arthur.
“Stop the boats.”
“No.”
“I’ll put Maya overboard.”
Arthur’s blood went cold.
“You touch her—”
“Stop.”
Arthur looked at the commander.
They needed time.
He ordered patrol boats to hold distance.
“What do you want?”
“Claire.”
“She’s unconscious.”
“Then wake her up.”
“She’s in a coma.”
Daniel became silent.
Arthur understood.
Daniel needed a memory Claire carried.
“What cipher?”
Daniel laughed softly.
“Adrian told you.”
“Where does it lead?”
“The final Ashford vault.”
“Money?”
“Insurance.”
“What kind?”
“Evidence on people nobody has named.”
Arthur realized Richard’s network extended beyond the ledger.
Daniel wanted the archive destroyed because his future depended on it.
“Claire might never wake.”
“Then the children become useless.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Maya suddenly shouted in the background.
“He’s lying!”
A sound.
Daniel cursed.
Maya screamed:
“Bluebird song!”
The line went dead.
Arthur stared.
Bluebird song.
Not boat.
Song.
Claire’s childhood song contained the cipher.
Arthur remembered fragments.
Bluebird above the cedar tree.
Four little windows.
One silver key.
Numbers hidden inside verses.
Their mother created it to teach them counting.
Arthur began writing.
Four.
Seven.
Two.
Nine.
Jonathan watched.
“What is that?”
“A vault code.”
Arthur contacted Adrian.
Adrian recognized it.
An Ashford private repository in Montreal used an eight-digit numerical cipher.
Arthur reconstructed the full sequence.
If Daniel knew Arthur remembered, he no longer needed the children.
Danger increased.
They could not tell him.
Coast Guard prepared a boarding operation.
Maya helped from inside.
At thirteen, terrified, she remembered the boat from Arthur’s stories.
The lower hatch opened into an emergency flotation compartment.
She freed one wrist from loose tape.
Then Noah’s.
They crawled beneath the deck.
Daniel discovered them missing.
Shouting erupted.
Coast Guard accelerated.
Maya and Noah reached the rear platform.
Arthur listened over radio.
“Visual on two minors.”
Then gunfire.
Caleb fired toward patrol boats.
Agents returned controlled fire.
Maya pushed Noah down.
Daniel grabbed her.
The Bluebird struck a channel marker.
Daniel lost balance.
Maya kicked free.
Both children jumped into the river.
Arthur stopped breathing.
Rescue swimmers entered immediately.
Seconds felt like years.
Then:
“We have the boy.”
Arthur gripped the table.
“And Maya?”
Silence.
“Where is Maya?”
Another voice:
“Searching.”
Arthur could not breathe.
Then:
“Visual!”
A rescue swimmer pulled Maya from the water.
Alive.
Arthur bent forward.
His entire body shaking.
Daniel and Caleb were arrested aboard the damaged Bluebird.
The children survived.
This time, Daniel did not escape.
During interrogation, he made one mistake.
He laughed at Arthur.
“You think the ledger matters?”
Arthur watched him.
Daniel continued.
“Richard kept the real archive in the one place nobody searches.”
“What place?”
Daniel smiled.
“A coffin.”
Arthur remembered.
Three empty coffins had been buried after Claire’s staged funeral.
One for Claire.
One for Maya.
May you like
One for Noah.
The conspiracy had hidden its most dangerous evidence inside the graves of people who were never dead.
