Chapter 14 - VICTORIA’S BROTHER

Adrian Ashford had lived in Switzerland for nine years.
Officially.
In reality, he managed several offshore structures Richard used to hide money.
Unlike Victoria, Adrian never married into the Bennett family.
Never attacked anyone publicly.
Never attracted attention.
He stayed invisible.
That made him more dangerous.
Victoria stared at the security image.
“My brother?”
Arthur watched her carefully.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
“Stop lying to me.”
“I’m not.”
She pressed closer to the glass.
“Adrian hates Dad.”
“Apparently not enough.”
Victoria shook her head.
“You don’t understand. Adrian left because he found out about Mom.”
Arthur frowned.
“He knew?”
“He suspected Dad caused the crash.”
“Then why steal the ledger?”
Victoria looked terrified.
“Maybe he isn’t protecting Dad.”
“What else?”
“The ledger contains offshore account keys.”
Arthur understood.
Money.
Even after Richard’s arrest, hundreds of millions remained hidden.
Adrian wanted it.
Daniel wanted protection.
Together they could disappear.
Then Arthur received an emergency family-court notice.
A petition had been filed questioning his temporary custody involvement with Maya and Noah.
It alleged he exposed them to repeated danger.
Kidnapping.
Armed confrontations.
Media attention.
Technically true.
The petitioner:
Adrian Ashford.
His argument claimed the Bennett family environment was unsafe and requested independent protective placement.
Arthur stared.
“He wants the children.”
Jonathan became furious.
“Why?”
Maya answered.
“The trust.”
Their identity had activated inheritance rights.
If placed under a corrupt guardian connected to Adrian, he could try to control their assets.
Arthur immediately fought the petition.
Then worse evidence appeared.
Security footage seemed to show Arthur striking Victoria.
A carefully cropped version of the original living-room incident.
It omitted Victoria attacking the children.
Showed only Arthur’s slap.
Public opinion exploded.
ARTHUR BENNETT ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
Arthur had struck Victoria.
He could not deny it.
Whatever had happened before did not make the action disappear.
He issued a statement.
“I should not have struck my wife. I accept responsibility for that. The full incident is under investigation.”
His attorneys hated the statement.
Maya respected it.
“Why didn’t you say she hit us first?”
“Because both things are true.”
The full security video was eventually released through court process.
It showed Victoria admitting she slapped the children.
Arthur’s action remained.
But context changed public perception.
Still, Adrian’s legal strategy worked.
A judge ordered Maya and Noah temporarily moved into a protected residential facility while custody was reviewed.
Maya looked devastated.
“You’re sending us away?”
Arthur knelt.
“No.”
“It looks like it.”
“You’re going somewhere protected until I fix this.”
She laughed bitterly.
“That’s what adults always say before we disappear.”
Arthur felt the words.
Noah packed silently.
Claire was not yet medically able to assume full care.
Jonathan’s legal identity had been complicated by twelve years of false death records.
The children had to leave.
Arthur promised to visit.
Maya did not answer.
That night, their transport vehicle never arrived at the facility.
It disappeared between the courthouse and secure residence.
Arthur received the news twenty-three minutes later.
He nearly destroyed his office.
Adrian had used the legal system to move them into a predictable transport route.
Then taken them.
Again.
Richard had used violence.
Adrian used paperwork.
Same family.
Different weapon.
Victoria demanded release to help.
Authorities refused.
She asked to speak with Arthur.
“I know where Adrian will take them.”
“You keep knowing locations after people disappear.”
“I grew up with him.”
Arthur stared.
“Where?”
“The airport?”
“No.”
“Switzerland?”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“He’ll take them somewhere nobody can accuse him of kidnapping them.”
Arthur waited.
“Ashford Academy.”
A private boarding school owned by a family trust.
Technically outside the state.
Highly secure.
Adrian could claim protective custody under the emergency petition.
Arthur’s attorneys immediately requested intervention.
Adrian was prepared.
A federal judge had already signed a temporary order.
Who?
Judge Lawrence Pike.
His name appeared in Claire’s ledger.
Paid by Richard.
The corruption was still alive.
Arthur realized arresting Richard had not destroyed the network.
It had only frightened everyone inside it.
Now Adrian was trying to gather the remaining pieces before they collapsed.
Maya and Noah.
The money.
The ledger.
And Daniel.
Arthur looked toward Victoria.
“Your brother isn’t running.”
“No.”
“What is he doing?”
May you like
Victoria answered:
“He’s taking over.”
