Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF TELLING THE TRUTH

Arthur entered the Bennett Industries boardroom at nine the next morning.

Sixteen directors waited.

Lawyers filled the back wall.

Televisions displayed falling stock prices.

Everyone looked terrified.

The chairman spoke first.

“We are asking for forty-eight hours.”

Arthur sat.

“For what?”

“To verify the documents.”

“They’re verified.”

“To prepare the market.”

Arthur looked around.

“You want to hide them.”

“Temporarily.”

Arthur almost smiled.

That word.

Temporarily.

Charles had delayed exposing Richard temporarily.

Daniel had stayed silent temporarily.

Victoria had hidden the children temporarily.

Every permanent disaster began with someone asking for a little more temporary silence.

Arthur stood.

“No.”

The chairman stared.

“You understand the consequences?”

“Yes.”

“Our credit could freeze.”

“Yes.”

“We could lose major contracts.”

“Yes.”

“Thousands of employees—”

“Stop.”

Arthur looked around the table.

“My sister spent twelve years imprisoned because people in this family kept using employees as an excuse for cowardice.”

The room went silent.

“We release everything.”

One director stood.

“That could destroy Bennett Industries.”

Arthur nodded.

“Then we rebuild it honestly.”

That afternoon, Bennett Industries publicly released the records.

The stock fell thirty-one percent.

News channels ran endless coverage.

Arthur’s personal wealth dropped by hundreds of millions on paper.

Richard’s network became national news.

Arthur received death threats.

Maya saw one headline:

BENNETT HEIR DESTROYS OWN EMPIRE.

She looked at Arthur.

“Do you care?”

“Yes.”

She seemed surprised.

Arthur smiled.

“Doing the right thing doesn’t mean you stop caring what it costs.”

He looked toward Claire’s hospital room.

“It means deciding the cost is still worth paying.”

Investigators recovered much of the stolen trust money.

Maya and Noah were legally confirmed through DNA as Claire and Jonathan’s children.

Arthur was their biological uncle.

The revelation changed their legal status.

The Bennett Children’s Trust automatically recognized them as heirs.

Their combined future interest was enormous.

Suddenly dozens of distant relatives appeared.

Attorneys.

Trust advisers.

People who had never cared when Maya lived in foster housing.

Arthur became furious.

Maya found it funny.

“Yesterday nobody wanted us.”

She looked at a stack of letters.

“Today apparently everyone loves us.”

Jonathan said:

“Money is magic.”

Claire, slowly recovering, whispered:

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Money is a flashlight.”

Her speech remained slow.

“It shows you what was already there.”

Arthur smiled.

Claire was returning.

Then Victoria was formally charged.

Child assault.

Evidence tampering.

Conspiracy.

Fraud-related offenses.

Her cooperation might reduce her sentence.

But she would face consequences.

Arthur visited her once before arraignment.

She sat behind glass.

“Are the children okay?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Claire?”

“Improving.”

Victoria nodded.

“I’m glad.”

Arthur remained silent.

She looked at him.

“You filed for divorce.”

“Yes.”

“I knew you would.”

“Then why mention it?”

Victoria smiled sadly.

“Because part of me still wanted to hear you say you hadn’t.”

Arthur felt pain.

But not enough to change anything.

“I loved you,” she said.

Arthur answered:

“I believe you eventually did.”

That surprised her.

“Then—”

“Love doesn’t erase what you did.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You watched me grieve Claire.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Maya and Noah existed.”

“Not where.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

Arthur stood.

Victoria pressed her hand against the glass.

“Arthur.”

He stopped.

“My father is going to come for Claire again.”

Arthur turned.

“Why?”

“She remembers where the original Black Ledger is.”

“What Black Ledger?”

Victoria looked frightened.

“The one in your wall is a copy.”

Arthur stared.

“My father never trusted copies.”

“Where is the original?”

“Claire knows.”

Arthur immediately called the hospital.

No answer from Claire’s room.

Then security.

Chaos erupted through the line.

Someone had triggered a fire alarm.

Two guards were injured.

Claire was gone.

Again.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Richard had lost his money.

His network.

His daughter.

His reputation.

Now he was reaching for the only thing that could still protect him.

May you like

The original ledger.

And he had taken Claire to get it.
