Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN VICTORIA WAS TAUGHT TO HATE

Rosemont Hotel had been closed for renovations.

Federal agents entered quietly.

Arthur, Jonathan, and investigators reviewed old floor plans.

Victoria remained in custody but provided directions.

Eleanor Ashford’s fatal argument with Richard occurred in Suite 803.

Claire had secretly recorded part of it.

The tape was never found.

Richard believed Claire hid it in the hotel.

That was why he brought her there now.

Agents reached the eighth floor.

Suite 803 was empty.

But a hidden service corridor showed recent footprints.

They followed them into the old ballroom.

Claire sat onstage.

Richard beside her.

A gun resting on his knee.

He was surrounded.

He knew it.

Arthur entered under negotiators’ instructions.

Richard smiled.

“There he is.”

“Let Claire go.”

“Everyone says that like I’m still interested in leaving.”

Arthur stopped.

Richard looked older.

Defeated.

But dangerous.

Claire’s hands were free.

She looked frightened.

Richard held a small cassette.

“I finally found Eleanor’s confession.”

Victoria’s mother.

Arthur stared.

Richard pressed play.

Eleanor’s voice filled the empty ballroom.

“Richard moved the trust money.”

Then Claire.

“We can prove it.”

Eleanor:

“I’ll testify.”

Richard’s smile disappeared while hearing his dead wife.

The tape continued.

Eleanor said:

“If anything happens to me, Victoria needs to know the truth.”

Victoria had been twenty-seven when her mother died.

Richard had told her Claire caused the accident by dragging Eleanor into scandal.

The recording revealed the opposite.

Eleanor planned to leave Richard.

To take Victoria and Adrian.

To testify.

Her car crash occurred three days later.

Arthur looked toward Richard.

“You killed your wife too?”

Richard’s face twisted.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“She was leaving.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I did not kill Eleanor.”

Claire suddenly spoke.

“He cut her brake line.”

Richard stood.

“You don’t know that.”

Claire looked directly at Arthur.

“Daniel told me.”

Arthur froze.

Daniel again.

Richard shouted:

“Daniel lies.”

“Yes,” Claire said.

“But he showed me the invoice.”

A mechanic had been paid through one of Richard’s shell accounts.

The Black Ledger might contain it.

Investigators searched remotely.

Found the payment.

Richard’s composure collapsed.

For seventeen years he had allowed his daughter to believe Claire destroyed her mother.

He turned Victoria’s grief into loyalty.

Arthur finally understood Victoria’s rage.

Not justification.

But architecture.

Richard built her hatred carefully.

Every lie serving another.

Agents moved closer.

Richard grabbed Claire.

Arthur stepped forward.

Richard raised the gun.

Then Claire looked at him.

“You’re not going to shoot me.”

Richard’s hand trembled.

“Why?”

“Because then you have nothing left.”

The words landed.

Richard had lost money.

Children.

Influence.

His daughter.

His wife long ago.

Claire was the last person who still carried the original story of him.

Killing her would leave him alone with no one to control.

He hesitated.

That was enough.

Agents rushed.

Richard was taken down.

Claire fell.

Arthur caught her.

For the first time in twelve years, Richard Ashford was in handcuffs.

He looked toward Claire.

Then whispered:

“You ruined everything.”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

Her voice was weak.

“You did.”

Richard was arrested.

The ballroom went silent.

Arthur believed the nightmare had ended.

He was wrong.

Because Daniel Kline was still missing.

And when investigators returned to the federal evidence facility that night, they discovered the original Black Ledger had vanished.

The evidence-room supervisor was unconscious.

One security camera showed Daniel leaving with the ledger.

And beside him walked a person Arthur never expected.

Adrian Ashford.

Victoria’s older brother.

A man who had barely appeared in the investigation.

A man everyone had assumed lived overseas.

Arthur stared at the footage.

Richard had been arrested.

But the Ashford conspiracy had just gained a new leader.
