Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Inside the Family

The photograph stayed on my desk for three hours.

I did not move it.

I did not destroy it.

I did not call anyone.

Because sometimes the most dangerous evidence was not the thing you feared.

It was the thing you thought you had already buried.

Richard Harrington stood in the photograph beside a man named Adrian Cross.

A name that belonged to another life.

A life before Samantha.

Before the quiet home.

Before morning coffee and peaceful evenings.

Adrian was not a friend.

He was not an enemy.

He was something far more dangerous.

A survivor.

The kind of man who could walk through a battlefield and leave everyone else wondering why he was the only one still standing.

And he knew everything about me.

He knew Gareth Vale.

Not Gareth Cole.

Not the husband Samantha loved.

The man behind the shadow.

When I returned home, Samantha immediately noticed something was wrong.

She had always been better at reading me than anyone else.

“You found something.”

I looked at her.

“How did you know?”

She gave a small tired smile.

“Because you stopped pretending.”

That sentence hit harder than any accusation.

Because she was right.

For years, I had mastered the art of hiding.

But Samantha could see the cracks.

I sat beside her.

“There is something your father never told you.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“Your father knew people were coming after his company.”

She looked down.

“I already knew that.”

“No.”

I placed the photograph in front of her.

“He knew who was behind it.”

She picked it up.

Her face changed.

“Who is this?”

“Adrian Cross.”

She looked at me.

“Why do you know him?”

I was silent.

And that silence answered the question before I did.

“Because he was part of my world.”

Samantha slowly placed the photograph down.

“Your world.”

The words carried weight.

She was still trying to understand that the man she married had entire chapters of his life hidden from her.

“He was one of the few people who knew my real identity.”

“And now he has my father’s photograph.”

“Yes.”

A cold feeling passed through the room.

“What does he want?”

I looked at the window.

“The same thing everyone wants.”

“What?”

“Control.”

The next morning, Samantha received a call.

It was from the Harrington family attorney.

The one who had represented her father for twenty years.

She answered on speaker.

“Mrs. Harrington.”

The man sounded nervous.

“Your father left instructions that were never delivered.”

Samantha sat up.

“What instructions?”

“There is another beneficiary attached to the estate.”

Silence.

I looked at her.

“Who?”

The attorney hesitated.

“I was told never to reveal this unless the original ownership documents were threatened.”

Samantha’s voice became colder.

“Tell me.”

A long pause.

“Gareth Cole.”

The room went silent.

Samantha looked at me.

I felt the same confusion.

“What?”

The attorney continued.

“Your father added a protection clause.”

“What kind of clause?”

“If anyone attempted to force the estate away from you, ownership control would temporarily transfer to the person he trusted most to protect you.”

Samantha stared at me.

“Gareth…”

I shook my head.

I knew Richard trusted me.

But this?

This was something else.

The attorney continued.

“Your father believed you would choose love over power.”

A pause.

“And he believed Mr. Cole would choose protection over ownership.”

That afternoon, the betrayal came from someone unexpected.

Valerie.

Samantha’s younger sister arrived at the estate.

No lawyers.

No security.

No arrogance.

Just tears.

“I need to talk to you.”

Samantha almost refused.

But I stopped her.

“Let her speak.”

Valerie entered the living room.

She looked smaller than before.

Broken.

“I was wrong.”

Samantha stared at her.

“You left me outside.”

Valerie looked down.

“I know.”

“You watched them hurt me.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Valerie’s hands trembled.

“Because Mom lied to me.”

That caught everyone’s attention.

“What do you mean?”

Valerie looked at me.

“She never planned to give me the company.”

Silence.

“She promised me everything if I helped her.”

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“But she was only using me.”

Samantha looked away.

Pain crossed her face.

Because betrayal from strangers hurt.

But betrayal from family destroyed something deeper.

“What did she do, Valerie?”

Valerie swallowed.

“She has another partner.”

“Who?”

May you like

The answer came quietly.

“Adrian Cross.”
