Chapter 16 - The Shadow’s Final Enemy

The first warning came from Europe.

Then Asia.

Then North America.

Three separate organizations reported the same thing.

Someone was buying influence.

Acquiring companies.

Recruiting former members.

Building an empire designed specifically to challenge mine.

The name behind it:

Adrian Cross.

I stood inside the command center overlooking the city.

The same room I had not entered for years.

My people waited.

“Adrian is rebuilding.”

One of my advisors nodded.

“He’s faster than expected.”

“Because he planned this before he returned.”

I looked at the screens.

Connections.

Financial movements.

Names.

Adrian had not been trying to destroy me.

He had been replacing me.

Samantha entered the room.

Everyone became quiet.

She had never been inside my world before.

The real one.

The one hidden behind the husband she knew.

She looked around.

Then at me.

“So this is what you left behind.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She walked closer.

“I understand now.”

“Understand what?”

“Why you were afraid to tell me.”

I looked at her.

She touched my hand.

“Not because you were afraid I would hate you.”

A pause.

“You were afraid I would see how much pain you carried.”

For a moment, I had no answer.

Because she was right.

That night, Adrian sent a message.

Not to me.

To Samantha.

Ask your husband who died because of him.

I found the message.

And immediately knew what Adrian was doing.

He was reaching into the past.

The part of my life I never discussed.

The part Samantha deserved to know.

She looked at me.

“Who died?”

Silence.

I sat down.

For years, I carried this alone.

Now I finally told her.

“My brother.”

Her expression softened.

“I had a brother?”

I nodded.

“His name was Daniel.”

I looked at the floor.

“He believed people could change.”

A pause.

“And because I trusted the wrong person…”

I stopped.

Samantha understood.

“Adrian?”

“Yes.”

Daniel was the reason I became the Crimson Shadow.

Not for money.

Not for power.

For justice.

After his death, I rebuilt everything.

I removed the people who used fear for their own gain.

I changed the organization.

I became someone powerful enough that nobody would ever take another person I loved from me.

But power had a cost.

And Adrian knew that.

“He wants you to hate yourself.”

Samantha’s voice was quiet.

“He wants you to believe you’re still that man.”

I looked at her.

“And what if I am?”

She shook her head.

“You’re not.”

“How do you know?”

“Because that man would have chosen revenge first.”

She held my hand.

“You chose me.”

The final battle began three days later.

Adrian attacked from every direction.

Financial markets.

Business partners.

Information leaks.

Legal pressure.

Everything at once.

The old Gareth would have responded with destruction.

The old Crimson Shadow would have burned everything down.

But Samantha changed something.

She taught me another kind of power.

Control.

Adrian believed he understood me.

He believed my love made me weak.

But he never understood the truth.

Samantha was not the chain holding me back.

She was the reason I finally stopped running.

The final message arrived at midnight.

Tomorrow ends everything.

I looked at Samantha.

She looked back.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Only certainty.

“Then tomorrow ends it.”

I nodded.

May you like

Because for the first time in years...

I was not fighting alone.
