Chapter 17 - The Woman Beside the Shadow

For years, the world believed the Crimson Shadow was a man who stood alone.
They were wrong.
The truth was that the most dangerous thing about a person was not the power they carried.
It was the reason they refused to fall.
And for me, that reason had always been Samantha.
The final confrontation with Adrian Cross was approaching.
Every hour brought another attack.
Another attempt to weaken us.
Another reminder that Adrian had spent years preparing for this moment.
But something had changed.
Before Samantha, I would have responded with anger.
With force.
With the cold precision that built my reputation.
But now I understood something Adrian never did.
A person who only knows destruction will eventually destroy themselves.
The night before the final move, Samantha found me in the old study.
The same room where I kept every secret I had carried for years.
She stood in the doorway.
“You’re thinking about leaving.”
I looked up.
“What?”
She walked closer.
“You’re thinking if you remove yourself from my life, Adrian loses his target.”
I stayed silent.
Because she was right.
That was exactly what I had been considering.
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Samantha—”
“No.”
Her voice was firm.
“I spent my entire life with people deciding what was best for me.”
A pause.
“My mother decided.”
“My family decided.”
“Everyone thought they knew what I needed.”
She stepped closer.
“I will not let you do the same.”
I looked at her.
“You deserve a normal life.”
She smiled sadly.
“Do you?”
That question stopped me.
Because I knew the answer.
No.
I had never wanted a normal life.
I wanted a meaningful one.
And Samantha had given me that.
“You saved me in the snow.”
She touched the scar on my hand from years ago.
“You protected me when everyone else wanted something from me.”
A pause.
“Now let me choose you.”
For years, people had followed the Crimson Shadow because they feared him.
But Samantha stayed because she loved Gareth.
And that was something no enemy could defeat.
The next morning, the final operation began.
Adrian had gathered his remaining allies at an abandoned financial complex outside Anchorage.
A place designed to symbolize his victory.
He wanted me to come there.
He wanted the world to see the Crimson Shadow fall.
Instead, he saw something he never expected.
Samantha beside me.
When we entered the building, Adrian smiled.
“I knew you would bring her.”
I looked at him.
“She came because she wanted to.”
He laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked at Samantha.
“She is the reason you will lose.”
Samantha stepped forward.
“No.”
Adrian’s smile faded.
“I’m the reason he wins.”
The room became silent.
Because Adrian finally understood.
Samantha was not a hostage.
She was not a weakness.
She was my equal.
Adrian revealed his final plan.
He had prepared evidence.
False documents.
Manipulated recordings.
Enough to destroy my reputation forever.
He believed the world would turn against me.
But he forgot something.
The truth had already survived once.
And it would survive again.
Samantha connected the final piece.
The evidence from Richard’s files.
The financial records.
The hidden agreements.
Everything Adrian tried to bury.
“You made one mistake.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“You assumed my father left me an inheritance.”
She held up the documents.
“He left me the truth.”
The authorities arrived moments later.
Not because of my influence.
Not because of my organization.
Because Adrian had finally created a trail impossible to hide.
The same man who spent years manipulating others was finally trapped by his own arrogance.
Adrian looked at me as he was taken away.
“You changed.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
May you like
A pause.
“And that’s why you lost.”
