Chapter 12 - The Queen Behind the Throne

The biggest mistake people made about Samantha Harrington was assuming she was innocent.

They saw kindness.

They saw patience.

They saw a woman who avoided confrontation.

They mistook compassion for weakness.

They were wrong.

Because kindness was not the opposite of strength.

Sometimes it was the reason strength existed.

Three weeks after the attack, Samantha returned to the Harrington headquarters.

Not as an heiress.

Not as Richard Harrington’s daughter.

As the new leader.

The entire company watched as she walked through the doors.

The same doors where people once whispered that she would fail.

Now they stood silently.

Respectfully.

Because they understood.

She had survived everything designed to destroy her.

“I want a complete review of every department.”

The executives exchanged looks.

One of them smiled.

“Mrs. Harrington, perhaps you should leave those decisions to experienced professionals.”

Samantha looked at him.

“Meaning?”

He hesitated.

“People who understand this industry.”

She smiled slightly.

“My father built this company.”

She placed a folder on the table.

“And I spent the last month learning every part of it.”

The folder contained financial analysis.

Risk assessments.

Expansion plans.

Security improvements.

The room went quiet.

She had not been hiding.

She had been preparing.

Later that evening, I found her still working.

“You’re exhausted.”

She didn’t look up.

“So are you.”

I smiled.

“That’s different.”

“No.”

She closed the file.

“It isn’t.”

She looked at me.

“You spent years building an empire in silence.”

A pause.

“Now I’m building mine.”

That was the moment I realized something.

Samantha did not want to stand behind the Crimson Shadow.

She wanted to stand beside him.

But Adrian was not finished.

He changed tactics.

Instead of attacking the company...

He attacked the past.

A former member of my organization appeared publicly.

A man named Victor Raines.

Someone who claimed I had built my empire through fear.

Someone who claimed the Crimson Shadow was a monster hiding behind a husband’s smile.

The media exploded.

The public questioned everything.

Samantha watched the interview.

Then she turned to me.

“Is it true?”

I knew exactly what she meant.

“Some of it.”

She waited.

“I made decisions I regret.”

“People were hurt?”

“Yes.”

She looked away.

The silence was painful.

Then she asked:

“Why did you stop?”

I answered honestly.

“Because I met you.”

She looked back.

“And I realized I didn’t want to spend my life being feared.”

A pause.

“I wanted a life worth protecting.”

That night, Samantha made a decision.

She called a press conference.

I tried to stop her.

“You don’t have to do this.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they are telling the world who you are.”

She stepped closer.

“And I want to tell them who you became.”

The next morning, Samantha stood before cameras.

Millions watched.

She did not look like a victim.

She looked like a leader.

“My husband has a past.”

The room went silent.

“Yes, he made choices I would not have made.”

A pause.

“But I also know the man standing beside me.”

She looked directly into the cameras.

“The world knows the Crimson Shadow.”

Her voice remained steady.

“But I know Gareth.”

And that was the moment the world saw something Adrian never expected.

The Crimson Shadow was not alone.

After the press conference, Adrian sent one final message.

You chose her.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

That means I know exactly where to hurt you.

I deleted it.

But the threat remained.

Because Adrian Cross was preparing his final move.

And this time...

May you like

He was not coming for the company.

He was coming for Samantha.
