Chapter 18 - THE FAMILY THAT REMAINED

Recovery was slower than justice.

Rachel suffered nightmares.

Jonathan did too.

Emma began therapy.

For weeks she refused to sleep unless Noah and Lily were nearby.

If either baby became too quiet, she panicked.

Laura taught her how monitors worked.

How breathing changed.

How babies slept.

Gradually, fear released its grip.

Noah recovered completely.

Lily needed additional monitoring because of the severe hypothermia she experienced.

But doctors expected normal development.

Jonathan sold the old Hayes mansion.

He did not want his children raised inside a monument to power.

Instead he bought a modest house on several acres near Rachel’s old neighborhood.

Not because they lacked money.

Because Emma wanted trees.

And chickens.

And a porch swing.

Jonathan asked Rachel to marry him.

Again.

No photographers.

No expensive restaurant.

They stood beside the repaired fence at the Old Mill Road house.

Jonathan held the same ring he had given her eight years earlier.

Rachel had kept it hidden inside a sock during every move.

“You realize,” Rachel said, “our engagement has gone badly twice.”

Jonathan smiled.

“Third time?”

She laughed.

Emma appeared behind them.

“Say yes already.”

Rachel turned.

“You’re supposed to be inside.”

“I was listening.”

Jonathan looked at Emma.

“Privacy appears to be difficult in this family.”

Emma nodded seriously.

“You have three children.”

Rachel smiled.

Then looked at Jonathan.

“Yes.”

He blinked.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

Emma cheered.

Noah began crying inside.

Then Lily.

Jonathan sighed.

“Our audience objects.”

Rachel kissed him.

“Go handle your children.”

He smiled.

“All three?”

Emma ran.

Jonathan chased her.

Rachel watched them.

Eight years ago, she had believed this life was gone forever.

Now it was noisy.

Complicated.

May you like

Scarred.

And real.
