Chapter 14 - THE CHILD WHO NEVER DIED

Abigail Ward had supposedly died at six months old from sudden infant illness.
There had been a funeral.
A tiny coffin.
Grant had buried his daughter.
Or believed he had.
Celeste revealed the truth.
She had learned years later that Abigail survived.
Charles arranged the falsified death because he wanted leverage over both parents.
He moved the baby between private caregivers.
When Celeste discovered the truth, Charles gave her a choice.
Work for him.
Or Abigail disappeared permanently.
That was why Celeste vanished.
That was why she helped Charles for years.
Grant stared at her.
“You knew she was alive?”
“For six years.”
“And you never told me?”
“He would have killed her.”
Grant turned away.
Celeste grabbed him.
“I watched you mourn.”
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
“I kept our daughter breathing.”
Grant’s anger collapsed.
He covered his face.
The family conspiracy had destroyed everyone differently.
Rebecca located a rural property purchased through the same trust that funded Abigail’s secret care.
Police approached carefully.
Inside they found toys.
Clothes.
Schoolbooks.
Fresh food.
But no Abigail.
On a desk lay a photograph.
Emma pushing the wheelbarrow toward the hospital.
Taken from a distance.
Rachel nearly stopped breathing.
Someone had followed Emma.
For miles.
And never helped.
Jonathan stared at the picture.
Charles had known.
He had watched a seven-year-old girl struggle under the summer sun with two dying infants.
He could have stopped the wheelbarrow.
He could have called an ambulance.
Instead he waited to see whether they survived.
Then Emma remembered something else.
“A gray truck.”
Rachel turned.
“What?”
“It kept passing me.”
Emma had noticed the same vehicle three times.
She assumed the driver was lost.
Now they knew.
Charles was inside.
The discovery changed Grant.
Whatever loyalty remained disappeared.
He gave Rebecca a name.
Thomas Vale.
Charles’s private accountant.
Vale was arrested attempting to cross the Canadian border.
Under pressure, he revealed Charles’s final plan.
Charles had transferred nearly forty million dollars.
He intended to leave the country by sea.
But first—
He wanted the children.
All four Hayes descendants.
Emma.
Noah.
Lily.
Abigail.
“Why?” Jonathan demanded.
May you like
Vale looked terrified.
“Because he says heirs are more valuable than money.”
