Chapter 11 - THE FIRE

The call came eighteen minutes later.

Smoke was rising above Hayes Foundation headquarters.

Someone had triggered fires on four floors simultaneously.

The archive server room was the primary target.

But Charles had miscalculated.

Jonathan had copied critical records months earlier.

Still, something else was inside the building.

Celeste.

She had gone there alone.

Rebecca raced toward the scene.

Firefighters brought Celeste out unconscious.

She survived.

Before losing consciousness, she handed Rebecca a scorched folder.

Inside was a document signed by Charles.

A payment authorization.

Eight years old.

The recipient was a shell company linked to Mercer.

Memo line:

PROPERTY RECOVERY.

Date:

The day Rachel was attacked.

It was finally enough.

But Charles remained missing.

Grant came to the hospital voluntarily.

Rachel did not want him near Emma.

Jonathan agreed.

Grant waited outside.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

Jonathan stared at his brother.

“Then talk.”

“Dad called me.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

Jonathan’s body tensed.

“What did he want?”

“You.”

“Where?”

“The old Hayes estate.”

Rachel looked at Jonathan.

The estate had been abandoned for years.

Grant continued.

“He says he wants to explain.”

Jonathan laughed.

“No.”

“He says he has something belonging to Mom.”

Evelyn froze.

“What?”

Grant looked at her.

“A recording.”

Evelyn’s face drained.

Jonathan noticed.

“What recording?”

She sat down.

For years Evelyn had carried her own secret.

Eight years earlier, the night Rachel disappeared, Evelyn confronted Charles.

She had seen financial papers.

She suspected the threats.

Charles denied everything.

Then Evelyn secretly recorded part of their argument.

She hid the tape.

Days later it disappeared.

“What was on it?” Rebecca asked.

Evelyn whispered—

“Charles admitted he frightened Rachel.”

Jonathan stood.

“You knew?”

“I didn’t know he tried to kill her.”

“You knew enough.”

Evelyn cried.

“I was afraid.”

Jonathan stepped back as if struck.

Rachel stared at her.

Eight years of suffering.

Emma growing without a father.

Jonathan searching.

All while Evelyn had possessed a piece of the truth.

“I’m sorry,” Evelyn whispered.

Rachel answered quietly.

“So was I.”

Those three words hurt more than shouting.

Then Grant’s phone rang.

Charles.

Grant answered on speaker.

“Hello?”

Charles’s voice came through calmly.

“Jonathan.”

Jonathan took the phone.

“I’m here.”

“You always were stubborn.”

“You poisoned my children.”

Charles sighed.

“You really should learn not to make accusations you cannot prove.”

“We proved enough.”

“No.”

Charles sounded almost amused.

“You found what I allowed you to find.”

Jonathan’s expression changed.

“What do you want?”

“Bring the brass key.”

Rebecca froze.

Jonathan looked at Rachel.

Charles continued.

May you like

“You opened the wrong lock.”

Then he disconnected.
