Chapter 10 - THE MAN WITH THE BADGE

Daniel Mercer had served as county sheriff for eighteen years.

He had personally supervised the initial search for Rachel eight years earlier.

He had also been the man who publicly announced there was no evidence of foul play.

Rebecca immediately stopped sharing information through official channels.

A small state police task force took control.

Mercer was placed under surveillance.

Jonathan remembered the name.

“Rachel said one of the men who attacked her wore a deputy jacket.”

Rachel stared at the photograph.

“That was him.”

Eight years disappeared from her face.

Fear returned instantly.

Mercer had been a young lieutenant then.

Now they understood.

Charles had not merely manipulated evidence.

He had owned the investigation.

Emma described the morning Rachel collapsed.

She had woken to Noah crying.

She walked toward the kitchen.

Rachel was already on the floor.

A man stood over her.

Sheriff Mercer.

He checked Rachel’s pulse.

Then used her phone.

Emma hid beneath the dining table.

Mercer opened cabinets.

He searched drawers.

Then he entered the hallway.

He tried the locked door.

He could not open it.

That explained why the secret room survived.

Before leaving, Mercer saw Emma’s shadow.

“He looked at me,” Emma whispered.

Rachel grabbed her daughter.

“What happened?”

“He said…”

Emma trembled.

“He said Mommy was sleeping.”

“Then?”

“He told me not to call anyone.”

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

“Why didn’t he hurt you?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca did.

“Because he expected you to stay.”

A seven-year-old child with no phone.

No car.

No nearby neighbors.

Two newborns.

An unconscious mother.

Mercer assumed nature would finish the job.

He never imagined Emma would put the babies in a wheelbarrow and walk miles to a hospital.

Emma’s courage had broken an eight-year conspiracy.

Police arrested Mercer that afternoon.

He denied everything.

Then investigators found Rachel’s missing phone hidden inside his garage.

He still denied it.

Until Rebecca showed him security photographs from a gas station near Old Mill Road.

Mercer’s patrol vehicle appeared in the background.

He smiled.

“Circumstantial.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Emma saw you.”

“A frightened child.”

“She remembers your badge.”

Mercer laughed.

“Kids remember superheroes too.”

Rebecca placed another photograph down.

Charles Hayes and Mercer at a private hunting lodge.

Dated three weeks earlier.

Mercer’s expression finally changed.

“Charles is going to leave you holding everything.”

Silence.

“You think loyalty matters to him?”

Mercer stared at her.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“He already disappeared.”

Mercer’s eyes shifted.

“He didn’t tell you?”

Nothing.

“He has Rachel’s children.”

Mercer looked up sharply.

Rebecca had lied.

The twins were safe.

But Mercer’s reaction told her everything.

“You didn’t know they survived.”

Mercer said nothing.

Rebecca smiled.

“Thank you.”

She stood.

Behind her Mercer shouted—

“You have no idea what Charles Hayes is capable of.”

Rebecca turned.

“Then help me.”

Mercer lowered his voice.

“He doesn’t run when he’s afraid.”

“What does he do?”

May you like

Mercer stared at her.

“He burns the board.”
