Chapter 9 - The House of Secrets

The original headquarters sat beneath an abandoned research facility.

A place removed from maps.

A place erased from records.

A place where people had once decided they could predict human behavior.

Control human choices.

Create perfect survivors.

When we arrived, everything looked untouched.

Dust.

Old equipment.

Broken monitors.

Like everyone had left suddenly.

Like they expected to return.

Daniel looked around.

“This place gives me a bad feeling.”

I nodded.

“Because it was never abandoned.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

I pointed toward the floor.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

The deeper we went, the more evidence we found.

Training records.

Psychological evaluations.

Recruitment files.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of people studied.

Manipulated.

Controlled.

Then we found the central archive.

A room filled with physical files.

Because whoever created this place trusted paper more than technology.

The first file I opened was mine.

It contained every detail of my life.

But one section was missing.

My childhood.

Someone had removed it.

“Why would they erase that?”

Daniel asked.

I looked at the empty space.

“Because that’s the part they didn’t want me to know.”

A hidden recording activated.

Nathan Cross appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“If you found this, then the system failed.”

I froze.

Nathan continued.

“We believed we could create people who could survive anything.”

A pause.

“We were wrong.”

The video continued.

“Survival without humanity creates monsters.”

Nathan admitted everything.

The program.

The manipulation.

The experiments.

The people who became dangerous.

Including Victor.

But then he revealed something unexpected.

Victor was not the greatest failure.

I was.

Because I was the only subject who refused the final stage.

The stage designed to remove emotional attachment.

The stage designed to create people who could never hesitate.

I failed because I chose compassion.

The recording ended with Nathan’s final words.

“The strongest people are not those who feel nothing.”

A pause.

“They are those who feel everything and still choose what is right.”

I stood there silently.

For years, I believed my emotions were the thing that made me vulnerable.

They were the reason I left.

The reason I wanted a normal life.

The reason I trusted someone enough to marry.

But maybe that was the point.

Maybe humanity was never the weakness.

Maybe it was the reason I survived.

Then the lights went out.

Someone was inside the facility.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

A voice came from the darkness.

“You finally understand.”

I turned.

A man stepped forward.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Nathan Cross.

Alive.

I reached for my weapon.

“You’re dead.”

He smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I was hiding.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?”

Nathan looked at me.

“Because I knew the truth would eventually find you.”

I stared at him.

“Why create this?”

His expression changed.

“Because I wanted to build people who could survive the world.”

“And Victor?”

Nathan looked away.

“I created him.”

Silence.

Then he added:

“But you created yourself.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“The difference between you and Victor is simple.”

“What?”

“You were given power.”

A pause.

“He chose to use it.”

Nathan looked at me.

“You chose to walk away.”

But before I could respond...

A screen turned on.

Victor appeared.

Smiling.

“Congratulations.”

My expression hardened.

“You brought them all together.”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

A pause.

“You did.”

The screen showed one final image.

My husband.

Elena Voss.

Nathan Cross.

And me.

Connected by one secret.

One event.

May you like

One night that started everything.

The honeymoon trap.
