Chapter 5 - The Identity I Buried

The hardest part about returning to my old life was not the danger.

It was remembering who I used to be.

The woman before the quiet apartment.

Before the normal job.

Before the marriage.

Before I convinced myself that peace meant forgetting.

My old identification sat on the table.

The photograph looked unfamiliar.

Same face.

Different eyes.

Back then, I never smiled.

Not because I was unhappy.

Because I understood the world differently.

Trust was earned.

Information was protection.

And hesitation could cost lives.

Daniel watched me prepare.

“You’re sure?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“You know there is no going back.”

I nodded.

“There wasn’t.”

He frowned.

“What do you mean?”

I looked at Victor’s file.

“He already brought me back.”

My first mission was finding Victor’s network.

Not Victor himself.

People like him rarely worked alone.

They had assistants.

Financial managers.

Fixers.

People who moved money and information.

People who cleaned up the damage.

The first name we discovered was Marcus Reed.

Victor’s financial advisor.

A man who had disappeared two days before Victor vanished.

We tracked him to a private airport.

He was preparing to leave the country.

But he was not alone.

He had a file.

A file containing every victim.

Every operation.

Every planned marriage.

Every disappearance.

We intercepted him before he left.

But Marcus did not fight.

He surrendered.

That worried me more.

People like Marcus did not surrender unless they had a reason.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked at me.

“Victor is not running.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then where is he?”

Marcus smiled.

“He wants her to find him.”

Everyone looked at me.

I knew exactly what he meant.

Me.

Marcus opened the file.

Inside was one final document.

A contract.

My name was on it.

Not my married name.

Not my public identity.

My real name.

The one only a few people knew.

The date shocked me.

The contract was created eight months before my wedding.

Before I met my husband.

Before the honeymoon.

Before Victor knew I existed.

Impossible.

Unless...

Someone had been watching me long before I knew Victor.

That night, I returned home and found the lights on.

I reached for my weapon.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The apartment was empty.

Except for one thing.

A photograph placed on the table.

My old military team.

A picture taken years ago.

Everyone in the photo was alive.

Except one person.

The person standing beside me.

My former partner.

The person who died during my last mission.

On the back of the photograph were five words:

You never knew the truth.

My hands tightened around the picture.

Because suddenly this was no longer about my husband.

No longer about Elena Voss.

No longer about the honeymoon trap.

Victor Hale had not entered my life by accident.

He had been connected to my past.

And someone had spent years making sure I never discovered why.

I looked out the window.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

For years, I believed I buried my old life.

But the truth was different.

My old life had been waiting.

Patiently.

Quietly.

Until someone dangerous enough decided to wake it up.

And now I had only one question:

May you like

Who was Victor Hale before he became my enemy?

And why was he afraid of the woman I used to be?
