Chapter 11 - The Island of Broken Promises

The island was invisible from most maps.
A place hidden in international waters.
The perfect location for someone who wanted secrets to disappear.
The perfect location for Victor Hale.
The storm arrived before we did.
Heavy rain.
Strong winds.
A sky dark enough to feel endless.
The kind of weather that made people turn back.
But I had spent my life walking toward things everyone else avoided.
When our boat reached the island, everything was silent.
Too silent.
The research facility stood abandoned.
Concrete walls.
Broken windows.
Rusting equipment.
A place that looked dead.
But I knew better.
Places like this were never empty.
They were waiting.
Daniel checked his weapon.
“You sure about this?”
I looked at the building.
“No.”
He raised an eyebrow.
That surprised him.
I rarely admitted uncertainty.
Then I continued.
“But I know we have to do it.”
Inside, we found evidence everywhere.
Victor’s work.
His files.
His experiments.
His obsession.
Walls covered with photographs.
Victims.
Targets.
People he studied.
People he controlled.
Then I saw mine.
A photograph from years ago.
Before the marriage.
Before the honeymoon.
Before I knew his name.
The note beneath it read:
The only variable we cannot predict.
A voice echoed through the building.
“Welcome.”
Victor.
We turned.
But he was not there.
Only speakers.
“You finally understand.”
His voice continued.
“You were never the target.”
I looked around.
“Then what was I?”
A pause.
“The proof.”
The lights turned on.
A screen appeared.
Victor stood inside another room.
“You spent your life believing strength meant surviving.”
He smiled.
“But survival is easy.”
A pause.
“Changing is harder.”
“You wanted to prove I was like you.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His expression changed.
Because for the first time, I saw something beneath his confidence.
Pain.
“Because I needed to know whether someone like us could become something else.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Because the truth was more complicated than revenge.
Victor was not only a monster.
He was also a person who had been broken by the same machine that created him.
But understanding someone did not erase what they had done.
“You destroyed lives.”
Victor looked away.
“Yes.”
“You killed innocent people.”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
His answer was almost a whisper.
“Because nobody stopped them from doing it to me.”
The building shook.
An alarm sounded.
Victor had activated the security system.
The facility began locking down.
Daniel looked around.
“He’s trapping us.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at the cameras.
“He wants us to see something.”
The final room opened.
Inside were files.
Thousands of them.
But one file was different.
My name.
Again.
I opened it.
Inside was a document dated twenty years earlier.
A document that made my entire body freeze.
Because it contained one sentence:
Subject was selected before birth.
I looked up.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Because the truth was not about my career.
Not about Victor.
Not about the honeymoon.
It was about my entire life.
And Victor knew.
The screen turned on one final time.
Victor appeared.
“You’re finally ready.”
I stared at him.
“Ready for what?”
He smiled.
“To learn who chose you.”
The screen went black.
And for the first time since this began...
May you like
I was not hunting Victor Hale.
I was searching for the person who started everything.
