Chapter 6: A Different Kind of Strength
One year later, I stood on the stage at the Carter Foundation's annual gala.
Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom.
Not one of them knew me as someone's wife.
They knew me as myself.
I announced a new national program providing free legal assistance, emergency housing, and financial support for survivors of domestic abuse.
As the audience rose in applause, I caught my reflection in the ballroom mirror.
The bruise was long gone.
The fear had disappeared with it.
Some scars never completely fade.
But they no longer define the person carrying them.
That night, I returned home to a house filled with warmth instead of fear.
I poured myself a cup of coffee.
Ironically, it was the very same brand Daniel had once slapped me for buying.
