Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"The mansion," Richard continued. "The deed has always been registered under Emma Carter."
Margaret nodded.
"The mortgage was paid in full before the marriage."
Daniel stared at me.
"You... bought this house?"
"I inherited it."
Evelyn scoffed.
"Impossible."
Margaret calmly placed another folder beside her.
"My bank represents the Carter Family Trust."
Daniel blinked.
"What trust?"
"The one worth over two hundred million dollars."
The room became perfectly still.
Victor slowly leaned back in his chair.
"Carter..."
His eyes widened.
"The Carter Foundation?"
I met his gaze.
"My grandfather founded it."
Victor exhaled heavily.
"The largest charitable investment group in the state."
Daniel looked ready to collapse.
"You told me your parents were gone."
"They are."
"You said you worked in a small office."
"I do."
"I thought..."
"You thought I needed saving."
Richard smiled faintly.
"Mrs. Carter chose a quiet life because she wanted to be loved for herself."
Instead, she married a man who believed power came from fear.
Daniel looked at me with genuine panic for the first time.
