CHAPTER 6 — THE SURGEON WHO DISAPPEARED

Laura didn't sleep.

By sunrise, she had listened to the recording six times.

Each time, the same sentence cut deeper.

“Then we take the child.”

It wasn't a threat made in anger.

It had been discussed calmly.

Planned.

Calculated.

As if her unborn baby were a piece of property they had already decided belonged to them.

But there was something else that wouldn't leave her mind.

Dr. Salinas had said the original surgical record still existed.

And the surgeon who kept it had disappeared.

Dr. Bell.

The man who had supposedly performed Diego's vasectomy.

The man whose signature appeared on the altered record.

The man who, according to Dr. Salinas, had vanished after someone tried to buy his silence.

At 7:12 a.m., Laura called her father.

“Dad, I need your help.”

There was no hesitation in his voice.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Stay there.”

“I need to find someone.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Bell.”

Silence.

Then her father's voice became unusually serious.

“Why?”

Laura looked at the laptop.

“Because he may be the only person who can prove what happened to Diego's medical records.”

Another pause.

“Send me everything you have.”

“I will.”

“And Laura?”

“Yes?”

“Don't meet anyone alone.”

She swallowed.

“Okay.”

Her father hung up.

Ten minutes later, a black SUV stopped outside her house.

Her father stepped out.

He wasn't wearing his usual work clothes.

He wore a dark jacket and carried a leather briefcase.

Laura knew that look.

It was the look he wore when something was very wrong.

He entered the house.

She handed him the flash drive.

He listened to the recording without interrupting.

When it ended, he removed his glasses.

“Where did you get this?”

“Someone named Reed gave it to me.”

Her father looked up.

“Reed?”

“You know him?”

“I know of him.”

“Who is he?”

Her father didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“He used to work in corporate security.”

“For Evelyn?”

“No.”

“For Diego?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Her father looked at her.

“For the Rivera family trust.”

Laura froze.

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about it?”

“I knew there was one.”

“You never told me.”

“I didn't know enough.”

Laura stared at him.

“You knew something was wrong.”

Her father's jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

He looked away.

“Years.”

Laura felt betrayed.

“Dad…”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“By saying nothing?”

“By keeping you away from them.”

“You let me marry him.”

“I didn't know what they were planning.”

“You knew enough.”

Her father's silence answered her.

Laura's eyes filled with tears.

“Tell me everything.”

He finally opened the leather briefcase.

Inside were several old folders.

One was marked:

RIVERA FAMILY TRUST

Another:

MEDICAL LIABILITY

And the third:

DIEGO RIVERA — PRE-MARITAL INVESTIGATION

Laura stared at it.

“You had a file on my husband?”

“I had a file on his family.”

“Why?”

“Because six months before your wedding, I received an anonymous warning.”

“What did it say?”

Her father pulled out a yellowed piece of paper.

Laura read the handwritten sentence.

DON'T LET YOUR DAUGHTER MARRY INTO THIS FAMILY.

Her heart pounded.

“Why didn't you stop me?”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“I confronted Diego.”

“And?”

“He convinced me I was wrong.”

Laura looked at the file.

“What else did you find?”

Her father turned another page.

“Dr. Bell's name.”

Laura's breathing stopped.

“You knew him?”

“I met him once.”

“When?”

“The week before Diego's vasectomy.”

“Why?”

Her father looked at her.

“Because he called me.”

Laura's mouth went dry.

“What did he say?”

“He said someone was pressuring him to alter a medical record.”

“Whose?”

“Diego's.”

Laura stepped closer.

“What exactly did he tell you?”

“He said the procedure had become part of a legal strategy.”

Laura stared.

“A divorce strategy?”

“That's what he believed.”

“But he performed the procedure.”

“Yes.”

“Why would he agree?”

“Because he was threatened.”

“With what?”

Her father looked down.

“His daughter.”

Laura's heart sank.

“They threatened his daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Is she safe?”

“I don't know.”

Her father took out another document.

It was a police report.

Laura read the date.

Eight years ago.

The report described a break-in at Dr. Bell's medical office.

Nothing had been stolen.

Except one item.

A surgical record.

Laura's voice dropped.

“Diego's?”

“Yes.”

“Then how do we know an original copy still exists?”

Her father pointed to the report.

“Because the police recovered something.”

“What?”

“A duplicate.”

Laura looked at him.

“Where?”

“That is what we're going to find out.”

Two hours later, they were driving north.

Laura sat in the passenger seat.

Her father drove.

Neither spoke much.

Finally, Laura asked:

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Why didn't you tell me about the trust?”

“I thought it was irrelevant.”

“Now?”

“Now I think it's the center of everything.”

Laura looked out the window.

“How much is it worth?”

Her father hesitated.

“Approximately forty-two million dollars.”

Laura turned toward him.

“Forty-two million?”

“Yes.”

“That's why they're doing this.”

“Maybe.”

“Not maybe.”

Her father glanced at her.

“Money explains motive.”

“It doesn't explain everything.”

“No.”

“What doesn't it explain?”

“The baby.”

Laura frowned.

Her father continued.

“If this were only about money, they could wait for the child to be born.”

“But they aren't.”

“Exactly.”

“They're desperate.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her father tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“I don't know.”

Laura looked at her stomach.

“Then we find out.”

At 11:43 a.m., they arrived at a small private storage facility outside Northbridge.

Her father parked.

An elderly manager met them at the office.

“You're looking for Dr. Bell's records?”

“Yes,” her father said.

The manager frowned.

“Those were supposed to be destroyed.”

Laura's heart dropped.

“Destroyed?”

“That's what I was told.”

“By whom?”

“An attorney.”

“Whose attorney?”

The manager shook his head.

“I don't remember.”

Her father placed a photograph on the desk.

“Have you seen this man?”

The manager studied it.

Then his eyes widened.

“That's Dr. Bell.”

“When was he here?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Laura and her father exchanged a look.

“Three weeks?”

“Yes.”

“Is he alive?”

The manager nodded.

“He collected several boxes.”

“Where did he go?”

“I don't know.”

“Did he leave a forwarding address?”

“No.”

The manager hesitated.

“But he left something behind.”

Laura stepped closer.

“What?”

“A key.”

The manager disappeared into the back office.

A minute later, he returned with a small envelope.

Inside was a brass key.

No label.

No number.

Just a tiny engraving:

B-17

Laura looked at her father.

“What is B-17?”

He didn't answer.

The manager said:

“Dr. Bell told me that if anyone came asking about the Rivera records, I should give them this.”

Laura's heart pounded.

“Why didn't you give it to us earlier?”

“You're the first people who came.”

Her father took the key.

“Where is B-17?”

The manager pointed toward the storage units.

“End of the third row.”

They walked through the narrow corridor.

Unit B-17 was at the very end.

The lock was old.

Her father inserted the key.

Click.

The door rolled upward.

Dust filled the air.

Inside were several boxes.

Laura's eyes immediately landed on one.

RIVERA — MEDICAL

Her pulse raced.

Her father opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

But the first document made Laura stop breathing.

DIEGO RIVERA — VASECTOMY

Date:

MAY 14

Laura stared.

“That is the date.”

Her father looked at her.

“The date of the procedure?”

“Yes.”

“But that's not what the altered record says.”

Laura grabbed the document.

The original surgical note was signed by Dr. Bell.

Everything looked normal.

Procedure completed.

Patient stable.

Post-operative instructions provided.

Then she saw something handwritten at the bottom.

PATIENT ADVISED: PROCEDURE NOT YET CONFIRMED AS STERILIZING. FOLLOW-UP SEMEN ANALYSIS REQUIRED.

Laura whispered:

“So he wasn't sterile.”

“Not immediately.”

She looked at the date.

“Then the pregnancy was completely possible.”

Her father nodded.

“But that's not the most important part.”

“What is?”

He pointed to another line.

PATIENT RETURNED FOR FOLLOW-UP? NO.

Laura stared.

“He never did the test.”

“No.”

“Then he knew.”

Her father looked at her.

“He should have known.”

Laura's hands trembled.

“But why would he claim otherwise?”

“Because someone needed him to.”

Her father continued searching.

Then he found a second file.

CONFIDENTIAL — TRUST COUNSEL

Laura read the first page.

The document stated that Diego's access to the forty-two-million-dollar trust depended on the status of his descendants.

But there was a condition.

A very specific condition.

No beneficiary may be added while paternity is disputed.

Laura's eyes widened.

“So if Diego accused me of cheating…”

“The trust could be frozen.”

“Then who controls it?”

Her father turned the page.

EVELYN RIVERA — TRUST ADMINISTRATOR.

Laura felt sick.

“She controls the money.”

“Yes.”

“And if Diego's paternity is disputed…”

“She keeps control.”

Laura stared at the document.

“But eventually the court would order a DNA test.”

“Unless the test is manipulated.”

Laura remembered Paola's warning.

Don't trust the DNA test.

Suddenly everything connected.

Evelyn needed the pregnancy disputed.

She needed Diego to deny paternity.

She needed the medical records to suggest the vasectomy had been successful.

And she needed control over the DNA test.

Laura whispered:

“They built the entire case before I even told Diego I was pregnant.”

Her father nodded.

“Yes.”

“But why?”

He turned to the next page.

And his expression changed.

Laura saw it.

“What?”

He didn't answer.

“Dad?”

He handed her the page.

At the top:

SPECIAL BENEFICIARY CLAUSE

Laura read.

Her face went pale.

The trust didn't simply provide money.

It provided funding for the treatment of descendants carrying a specific genetic marker.

And beneath that was a handwritten note.

Potential natural successor identified — female fetus.

Laura stopped breathing.

Her father stared at her.

“Laura…”

She touched her stomach.

“They knew the baby's sex.”

“Yes.”

“Before my ultrasound.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Her father looked at the paperwork.

“I don't know.”

Laura's voice shook.

“Someone tested my baby before I knew I was pregnant.”

Then they heard a sound.

Footsteps.

Both turned.

Someone was walking toward the storage unit.

Her father immediately closed the file.

“Stay behind me.”

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then a man's voice came from the corridor.

“You found it.”

Laura's heart slammed against her ribs.

Her father stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The man appeared in the doorway.

Gray hair.

Security badge.

Mr. Reed.

Laura stared.

“You.”

Reed looked at her.

“I told you the truth would find you.”

Her father moved between them.

“Why have you been helping my daughter?”

Reed looked at Laura.

“Because Dr. Bell asked me to.”

Laura's breath caught.

“Where is Dr. Bell?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“Why is he hiding?”

“Because Evelyn isn't the only person who wants him dead.”

The room went silent.

Laura stared at him.

“Who else?”

Reed looked toward the corridor.

Then lowered his voice.

“Someone inside Diego's law firm.”

Laura froze.

“My husband's attorney?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the divorce case is only a distraction.”

“What is the real plan?”

Reed looked directly at Laura's stomach.

“The trust.”

Laura already knew.

But Reed's next words made her blood run cold.

“No one is trying to prove Diego isn't the father.”

Laura frowned.

“Then what are they trying to prove?”

Reed answered:

“They're trying to prove your baby belongs to someone else.”

Laura stared at him.

“Who?”

Reed didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to her.

Laura looked down.

It showed Diego.

Paola.

And another man.

A man Laura had never seen before.

All three were standing outside a private fertility clinic.

The date on the photograph was eight years earlier.

One week before her wedding.

Laura's hands began shaking.

“Who is the man?”

Reed looked at her.

“That's the question Dr. Bell has been trying to answer for eight years.”

Laura looked closer.

Then her blood froze.

She recognized him.

Not personally.

But from somewhere else.

He was the man standing beside Evelyn in an old family photograph.

The man Laura had always been told was Diego's deceased uncle.

Except—

he wasn't dead.

Laura looked at Reed.

“Where is he?”

Reed's expression darkened.

“That's where this gets dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because he isn't Diego's uncle.”

Laura stared.

“Then who is he?”

Reed stepped closer.

“He's Diego's biological father.”

The words hit like a physical blow.

Laura looked at the photograph again.

Her husband had spent eight years believing his father was dead.

But the man was alive.

And he had been standing beside Diego and Paola before Laura's wedding.

Before the vasectomy.

Before the pregnancy.

Before everything.

Laura's father quietly said:

“We're leaving.”

Reed nodded.

“Now.”

“Why?”

Reed looked toward the storage facility entrance.

“Because someone followed you here.”

Laura's heart stopped.

“Who?”

Reed's answer was barely a whisper.

“Evelyn.”

A car door slammed outside.

Then another.

Laura clutched the medical file against her chest.

Her father grabbed her arm.

“Move.”

They rushed toward the rear exit.

Behind them, footsteps entered the storage corridor.

And a woman's voice echoed through the building.

“Laura!”

Evelyn.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Come out.”

Laura stopped for half a second.

Her father pulled her forward.

But Evelyn's voice followed them.

“You're looking for the wrong man.”

Laura froze.

Then Evelyn said the one thing that made her blood run cold.

“Ask your father what happened twenty-eight years ago.”

Laura looked at her father.

He had gone completely still.

For the first time in Laura's life, she saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear of the past.

Laura whispered:

“Dad…”

He couldn't answer.

And behind them, Evelyn's footsteps continued to approach.

The woman who had spent eight years controlling Laura's life had just mentioned a secret from before Laura was even born.

A secret her father had apparently been hiding.

And suddenly, Laura realized something terrifying:

May you like

The Rivera family wasn't the only family keeping secrets.

Her own father had one too.
