CHAPTER 14 — THE MAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

Three knocks echoed through the hallway.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Laura stood completely still.
Her hand remained over her stomach.
Behind her, Adrian stared at the front door.
Reed quietly moved toward the side window.
Laura's father was already gone in the ambulance, leaving only four people in the old house.
Laura.
Adrian.
Dr. Bell.
And Reed.
Outside was Diego.
The man who had accused her of cheating.
The man who had publicly humiliated her.
The man who had walked out of their marriage and moved into Paola's apartment.
The man who had filed for divorce.
And now he claimed to know the identity of her baby's father.
Laura looked at Adrian.
“Don't open it.”
Adrian nodded.
“I wasn't planning to.”
Diego's voice came again.
“Laura, please.”
She almost laughed.
Please?
That word sounded foreign coming from him.
“You have five seconds.”
Silence.
Then Diego said:
“Richard knows about the baby.”
Laura's blood ran cold.
“So does Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“They've known from the beginning.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Diego hesitated.
“Because I was wrong.”
Laura stared at the door.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
Reed looked through the side window.
“There's no one with him.”
Adrian frowned.
“Are you sure?”
“One vehicle. Diego alone.”
Laura stepped toward the door.
Adrian grabbed her arm.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I need answers.”
“He could be lying.”
“He probably is.”
“Then don't give him access.”
Laura stared at the door.
“I'm not opening it.”
She paused.
“But I can talk.”
She moved closer.
“Diego.”
“Yes?”
“Tell me who the father is.”
Silence.
Then:
“Me.”
Laura's face hardened.
“You're lying.”
“I know what the records say.”
“You're not the father.”
“I know.”
“Then stop wasting my time.”
“I'm not talking about biological paternity.”
Laura frowned.
“Then what are you talking about?”
Diego's voice cracked.
“I'm talking about what happened the night you were conceived.”
Laura went still.
Adrian's expression changed.
“Don't listen to him.”
Laura looked back.
“Why?”
“Because this is exactly how they manipulate people.”
Diego shouted through the door:
“Adrian isn't your father!”
The room fell silent.
Laura turned.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Diego continued:
“And Richard Mason isn't your father either.”
Laura's heart pounded.
“Then who is?”
Diego answered:
“Gabriel Hale.”
Adrian's eyes widened.
“No.”
Laura whispered:
“Gabriel.”
The name from the corrupted file.
The name connected to the administrator account.
The man everyone had treated like a ghost.
“Who is Gabriel Hale?”
Diego's voice dropped.
“Your mother's first husband.”
Laura's knees nearly gave out.
“What?”
Adrian stepped forward.
“That marriage was annulled.”
“Not according to the original records.”
Laura turned toward him.
“You knew.”
Adrian said nothing.
“Didn't you?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Gabriel was dangerous.”
“Where is he?”
Diego answered:
“Dead.”
Laura froze.
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
The same day the medical file had been accessed.
The same day Victor Hale died.
Two deaths.
One missing man.
Too many secrets.
Laura whispered:
“What happened?”
Diego's voice became almost inaudible.
“He was murdered.”
Laura opened the door.
Adrian immediately protested.
“Laura!”
She raised her hand.
“I need to hear this.”
Diego stood on the porch.
His face looked different.
The confident businessman was gone.
His tie was loose.
His shirt was wrinkled.
There was dried blood on his cuff.
Laura stared at it.
“What happened?”
“Richard.”
Laura stepped back.
“Come inside.”
Diego entered slowly.
Reed locked the door behind him.
Laura remained several feet away.
“You have one chance.”
“I know.”
“You will tell me everything.”
“Yes.”
“No lies.”
“No lies.”
“Start with the vasectomy.”
Diego swallowed.
“The procedure was real.”
Laura's eyes narrowed.
“I know.”
“But it wasn't completed correctly.”
“What does that mean?”
“The surgeon who performed it wasn't the doctor I was supposed to see.”
Laura froze.
“Who was he?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“I was sedated.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because I found the billing records.”
He pulled out his phone.
“I paid the clinic.”
He showed her the receipt.
The provider name was different from the one listed in his medical file.
Laura stared.
“Why?”
“I was told it was a routine transfer.”
“By whom?”
“Richard.”
Laura's jaw tightened.
“So Richard arranged your surgery.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Diego hesitated.
“To create the appearance that you couldn't possibly be pregnant with my child.”
Laura frowned.
“But if the vasectomy wasn't successful…”
“Then the pregnancy could still be mine.”
“Yes.”
“And that would destroy their story.”
Diego nodded.
“So they needed the medical records to say the procedure had worked.”
Laura's eyes widened.
“They fabricated the result.”
“Yes.”
“Before I was even pregnant.”
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“Then the pregnancy wasn't what exposed them.”
Diego shook his head.
“It was what exposed the lie.”
Laura looked toward Dr. Bell.
“Can you verify this?”
Bell took the phone.
He examined the receipt.
His expression changed.
“This clinic doesn't use this provider code.”
Laura frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“This invoice was generated after the procedure.”
“After?”
“Yes.”
“How long after?”
“Three months.”
Laura stared.
“So the bill was fabricated too.”
Bell nodded.
“This entire medical file was manufactured.”
Diego looked at Laura.
“And that's not the worst part.”
Laura's stomach tightened.
“What is?”
“The person who altered the file wasn't Richard.”
Silence.
Laura stared.
“Who?”
Diego looked at Adrian.
“Him.”
Everyone turned.
Adrian's face went pale.
“That's impossible.”
Diego pulled out another document.
“I found the access logs.”
He placed them on the table.
Adrian's credentials had been used.
Repeatedly.
For years.
Laura stared at him.
“You accessed my medical records.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Not me.”
“Then who?”
Diego answered:
“Someone using your identity.”
Laura looked at Adrian.
“Who had access?”
Adrian hesitated.
“One person.”
“Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
Laura's pulse quickened.
“Then Gabriel wasn't just watching me.”
“No.”
“He was protecting me?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He was monitoring you.”
Laura sat down.
Her legs felt weak.
“Why?”
Adrian's voice was low.
“Because Gabriel believed your mother stole something from him.”
“What?”
“You.”
Laura looked confused.
“My mother didn't steal me.”
“She took you away.”
“From Gabriel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted to use you.”
“For the genetic program?”
“Yes.”
Laura's stomach turned.
“My mother saved me.”
Adrian nodded.
“But Gabriel never stopped looking.”
“Then how did Diego get involved?”
Diego answered.
“Because Gabriel contacted me.”
Laura looked at him.
“When?”
“Before I met you.”
“How long before?”
“Four months.”
“Why?”
“He offered me money.”
“How much?”
“Five million dollars.”
Laura stared.
“For what?”
“To marry you.”
Silence.
Laura's eyes filled with disbelief.
“Five million.”
“Yes.”
“You agreed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was twenty-six.”
“That isn't an excuse.”
“I know.”
“You knew nothing about me.”
“I knew enough.”
“What did he tell you?”
“That you were worth billions.”
Laura's face hardened.
“And that was enough?”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Diego nodded.
“Then I met you.”
She stared at him.
“And?”
“I fell in love.”
Laura's expression didn't change.
“You had a strange way of showing it.”
“I was trapped.”
“So was I.”
“I know.”
“You could have left.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Laura frowned.
“What happened?”
“Richard threatened me.”
“With what?”
“My brother.”
Laura stared.
“Your brother?”
“Evan.”
“What about him?”
“He disappeared.”
Laura's blood ran cold.
“Richard took him?”
“I don't know.”
“But you believed he did.”
“Yes.”
“So you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“To protect him.”
“Yes.”
Laura looked at him.
For the first time, she saw something beyond the lies.
Fear.
Real fear.
But it didn't erase what he had done.
It only explained part of it.
“Why did you leave me for Paola?”
Diego looked down.
“Because Richard told me you were about to expose everything.”
“So you chose her.”
“I chose survival.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“You called me a cheater.”
“I know.”
“You let everyone hate me.”
“I know.”
Laura's voice became colder.
“And you filed for divorce.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because the divorce papers contained a clause.”
“What clause?”
“If I stayed married to you after the pregnancy, Richard would activate the second phase.”
Laura froze.
“What second phase?”
Diego looked at her stomach.
“Custody.”
Dr. Bell's expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
Diego looked at him.
“The moment Laura gave birth, they would claim the child was medically unstable.”
Laura's face went pale.
“They would use the genetic marker.”
“Yes.”
“They would say my baby needed specialized treatment.”
“Yes.”
“And take the baby.”
“Yes.”
Laura's hands shook.
“Where?”
“Mason Genetics.”
Laura stared.
“A private facility.”
“Yes.”
“They'd separate my baby from me.”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
Diego hesitated.
“They'd conduct tests.”
“What kind?”
“I don't know.”
“Don't lie.”
“I don't know all of it.”
Laura stood.
“You knew enough to participate.”
“I know.”
“What were they going to do to my child?”
Diego's eyes filled with tears.
“Extract genetic material.”
Laura's face went white.
“How?”
“Blood samples.”
“Anything else?”
Diego looked away.
“Stem-cell harvesting.”
Laura's breath caught.
“That could be dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“How dangerous?”
“They didn't care.”
A long silence followed.
Laura looked down at her stomach.
Her baby moved.
One tiny kick.
She placed her palm over it.
“No one touches my child.”
Diego nodded.
“No one will.”
Laura looked at him.
“Why are you here?”
He reached into his jacket.
Pulled out a small drive.
“I stole this from Richard.”
Laura stared.
“What is it?”
“The original research protocol.”
“Why?”
“Because it proves everything.”
“Why didn't you give it to the police?”
“Because Richard controls the police liaison.”
Laura's eyes narrowed.
“Then why come here?”
“Because Richard is going to kill me.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“What happened?”
Diego swallowed.
“He discovered I took the drive.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“And?”
“He sent men after me.”
Laura stared at the blood on his cuff.
“That's their blood?”
Diego nodded.
“Not mine.”
Reed took the drive.
“I'll examine it.”
Diego grabbed his arm.
“Don't connect it to the internet.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard can track it.”
Reed released it.
“Then we'll use an isolated machine.”
Suddenly, Laura's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Richard's voice came through.
“Laura.”
Her entire body stiffened.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
Laura looked at the drive.
“No.”
“You do.”
“Come and get it.”
A pause.
“You sound brave.”
“I've stopped being afraid of you.”
Richard laughed.
“You should be.”
“Why?”
“Because you still don't know who your father is.”
Laura's eyes narrowed.
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Richard's voice became cold.
“You know what I wanted you to know.”
Laura froze.
“What does that mean?”
“You really believe Adrian is protecting you?”
She looked at Adrian.
Richard continued:
“He's been lying to you since the day you were born.”
Laura's breathing became shallow.
“About what?”
“The night your mother died.”
Silence.
“What happened that night?”
Richard laughed softly.
“Ask Adrian.”
The call ended.
Laura looked at Adrian.
“What happened?”
He didn't answer.
“Tell me.”
Adrian's face was pale.
“Your mother died because of me.”
Laura froze.
“What?”
“I was driving.”
Her heart stopped.
“The night she died…”
“Yes.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone say she died alone?”
“Because I left.”
Laura stared.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Gabriel.”
Adrian sat down.
“The night your mother died, she called me.”
“Why?”
“She had discovered the truth about Richard.”
“What truth?”
“That Richard wasn't trying to control the Rivera trust.”
Laura waited.
“He wanted the genetic program.”
Adrian continued.
“He needed you.”
“Why me?”
“Because your genetic marker was unique.”
Laura looked down at her stomach.
“And my baby inherited it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Richard want Diego to marry me?”
“Because Diego was the perfect cover.”
“For what?”
“To monitor you.”
Adrian looked at Laura.
“And when you became pregnant, they realized the child might carry the marker too.”
Laura whispered:
“So they changed the plan.”
“Yes.”
“They wanted the baby.”
“Yes.”
“But Richard wasn't the only one.”
Adrian nodded.
“No.”
“Who else?”
He looked at Diego.
“Victor Hale.”
Laura frowned.
“Diego's father.”
“Yes.”
“He's dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then how was he involved?”
“He was the original financier.”
Laura stared.
“Financier of what?”
“The genetic program.”
Silence.
Laura finally understood why Victor had been paid millions.
He hadn't sold Diego.
He had bought access.
Reed suddenly looked up from the computer.
“I've opened the drive.”
Everyone turned.
“What does it show?”
Reed's face had gone pale.
“Laura.”
“What?”
“You need to see this.”
She walked over.
On the screen was a video.
A hospital room.
Her mother.
A newborn baby.
Laura.
And beside the bed—
Richard Mason.
Laura's heart stopped.
Richard was holding the newborn version of her.
But that wasn't the worst part.
He leaned toward the baby.
And said:
“She's mine.”
The video continued.
Laura's mother screamed:
“Get away from her!”
Richard smiled.
Then the footage cut.
A second video opened.
This one showed Adrian.
He was standing outside the hospital.
Talking to a younger Richard.
Laura watched in horror.
Richard handed Adrian an envelope.
Adrian accepted it.
Then Richard said:
“If you want the girl to survive, you will disappear.”
Laura stopped breathing.
Adrian looked at the screen.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I had no choice.”
Laura turned toward him.
“You took money.”
“No.”
“You took the envelope.”
“It wasn't money.”
“What was it?”
“A death certificate.”
Laura froze.
“For whom?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yours.”
The room fell silent.
Laura whispered:
“You were supposed to let them believe I was dead.”
“Yes.”
“And instead…”
“I made you disappear.”
Laura's eyes filled with tears.
“Then I wasn't missing.”
“No.”
“You were hiding me.”
“Yes.”
“From Richard.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the screen.
Then at Diego.
Then at Adrian.
Finally, she whispered:
“But if Richard believed I was dead…”
Adrian's face changed.
“He shouldn't know you're alive.”
Laura's heart stopped.
“Then why did he call me?”
Nobody answered.
Reed suddenly looked toward the window.
“Because someone told him.”
A black SUV appeared at the end of the driveway.
Then another.
Then another.
Diego's face went white.
“They found us.”
Laura grabbed the drive.
“Lock the doors.”
Reed ran toward the entrance.
Adrian moved toward the back hallway.
But before anyone could reach the doors—
The lights went out.
Again.
Laura heard footsteps outside.
Then a voice came through the darkness.
Not Richard.
Not Evelyn.
A voice she had never heard before.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Laura.”
She froze.
“Your mother made one mistake.”
The voice continued.
“She thought she could hide you from me.”
Laura held her stomach.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
“You've spent your whole life searching for your father.”
A pause.
“You've been looking at the wrong man.”
Then the front door exploded inward.
CRASH.
Glass shattered.
Men rushed into the house.
Reed shouted.
Adrian grabbed Laura.
Diego tackled one of the intruders.
And in the chaos, Laura saw a man standing outside beneath the porch light.
Tall.
Gray-haired.
Perfectly calm.
He looked directly at her.
And Laura recognized him.
She had seen his face before.
In her mother's photograph.
In the genetic file.
In the old hospital footage.
The man everyone believed had died three days ago.
Gabriel Hale.
He smiled.
May you like
And mouthed four words through the broken doorway:
“I'm your real father.”
