CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Laura spent the rest of the night staring at the message on her phone.

SHE'S NOT THE MISTRESS.

SHE'S THE WITNESS.

AND SHE KNOWS WHO SIGNED YOUR NAME.

She read the words again.

And again.

But one question kept returning.

If Paola wasn't the woman who had stolen her husband…

then why had Diego left Laura for her?

Why had Paola stood beside him at the café?

Why had she watched while Laura was publicly humiliated?

Why had she allowed everyone to believe she was the other woman?

Laura couldn't reconcile the woman she thought she knew with the woman described in those messages.

At 7:15 the next morning, she called Paola.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Then she sent a message.

We need to talk. Alone.

Three minutes later, Paola replied.

Riverside Cemetery. 10 a.m. Come alone.

Laura stared at the location.

A cemetery.

Of all places.

She almost didn't go.

But she knew fear was exactly what the person behind the messages wanted.

So at 9:47, Laura parked beneath a row of old oak trees.

The cemetery was nearly empty.

A cold wind moved through the branches.

Laura stepped out of the car.

Then she saw Paola.

She stood beside a weathered stone bench, wearing a long beige coat.

No makeup.

No jewelry.

No Diego beside her.

For the first time, Laura saw her without the polished image she had always associated with her husband's coworker.

Paola looked exhausted.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

Laura stopped several feet away.

“You have five minutes.”

Paola nodded.

“That’s fair.”

“Did you break into my house?”

“No.”

“Did you take the documents?”

“No.”

“Were you in the black SUV?”

Paola looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone told me to get out.”

Laura's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Paola reached into her coat.

Laura instinctively stepped back.

Paola stopped.

Slowly, she pulled out a small envelope.

She placed it on the bench.

“I want you to have this.”

Laura didn't move.

“What is it?”

“Something I should have given you eight years ago.”

Laura stared at the envelope.

“What's inside?”

“A copy of the first test.”

“The genetic test?”

Paola nodded.

Laura walked closer.

“Why did you have it?”

“Because I ordered it.”

Laura's eyes hardened.

“Why?”

Paola looked at her.

“Because Diego asked me to.”

“That's not enough.”

“I know.”

“Tell me everything.”

Paola took a breath.

“Eight years ago, before your wedding, Diego found out something about his family.”

“What?”

“His father had left behind a trust.”

Laura frowned.

“What kind of trust?”

“A medical trust.”

“What's that?”

“Money reserved for medical research and treatment connected to a hereditary condition.”

Laura felt a chill.

“What condition?”

Paola shook her head.

“I didn't know the exact diagnosis.”

“But you knew there was one.”

“Yes.”

“Who was at risk?”

“Diego's future children.”

Laura looked down at her stomach.

“And you?”

Paola's eyes filled with tears.

“My family had the same genetic marker.”

Laura stared.

“You were tested because of that?”

“Yes.”

“So you and Diego were tested for compatibility.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because his mother wanted to know whether they could have children without triggering the condition.”

Laura's voice became colder.

“And what did the results say?”

Paola looked away.

“That depends on which version of the report you believe.”

Laura froze.

“What does that mean?”

“There were two.”

Paola opened the envelope.

Inside were several photocopied pages.

She handed them over.

Laura read the first.

GENETIC COMPATIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Patient One: Diego Rivera.

Patient Two: Paola Mendoza.

Date: September 14, 2018.

Laura's eyes moved down.

Then she saw the conclusion.

HIGH-RISK COMPATIBILITY.

She looked up.

“What does this mean?”

“That our children could potentially inherit the condition.”

“And that's why Evelyn wanted the test?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she want me?”

Paola's expression changed.

“She didn't.”

Laura felt something inside her go cold.

“What?”

“She didn't choose you because she loved you.”

Laura said nothing.

“She chose you because your genetic profile was different.”

Laura stared at her.

“Different how?”

Paola shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then who does?”

“Evelyn.”

Laura looked at the report again.

There was another page.

A name appeared in the corner.

LAURA BENNETT — PRE-MARITAL SCREENING.

Laura's heart stopped.

“That isn't my maiden name.”

Paola nodded.

“I know.”

“Then whose is it?”

“I don't know.”

Laura's fingers tightened around the paper.

“Someone used a false identity.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Paola looked at her.

“To make you appear medically unsuitable for pregnancy.”

Laura felt dizzy.

“So the fertility report Dr. Hart showed me…”

“Was designed to make you believe you couldn't safely have children.”

Laura shook her head.

“Why would my mother-in-law do that?”

Paola's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she wanted Diego to marry you.”

Laura stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does when you understand the trust.”

Paola sat down.

Laura remained standing.

“Explain.”

“Diego's father established the trust after learning that the family's genetic condition had affected several relatives.”

“What condition?”

“Cardiac arrhythmia.”

Laura's hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

Paola continued.

“The trust paid for treatment, research, and genetic screening.”

“So what does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

Paola pulled out another page.

“The trust had one condition.”

Laura read it.

BENEFITS AVAILABLE ONLY TO DESCENDANTS WHO PASS SPECIFIED GENETIC SCREENING.

Laura frowned.

“So?”

“Evelyn believed Diego's biological children might not qualify.”

“Because of the family condition?”

“Yes.”

“And she wanted a different mother?”

Paola shook her head.

“She wanted a child who could qualify.”

Laura's stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“She needed Diego to have a child with a woman whose genetic profile met certain criteria.”

Laura looked at the page again.

“Me.”

Paola nodded.

“You.”

Laura's mouth went dry.

“But how would she know my genetics?”

“She had you tested.”

“Without my permission?”

“Yes.”

“Eight years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Before I married Diego?”

“Yes.”

Laura took a step backward.

“So my marriage…”

Paola whispered:

“Wasn't entirely an accident.”

The words struck harder than any slap.

Laura closed her eyes.

Eight years.

All those memories.

The proposal.

The wedding.

The house.

The first anniversary.

Every time Diego had told her he loved her.

Was any of it real?

She opened her eyes.

“Did Diego know?”

Paola hesitated.

“Some of it.”

“Some?”

“He knew your genetic profile was important.”

Laura's heart shattered.

“He knew?”

“He didn't know everything.”

“But he knew.”

“Yes.”

Laura looked away.

Tears gathered in her eyes.

Not because she still loved him.

Because she had spent eight years believing her life belonged to her.

Now she realized someone had been making decisions about it behind her back.

“Then why did Diego have the vasectomy?”

Paola looked at the ground.

“Because the pregnancy changed the plan.”

“What plan?”

“Evelyn wanted Diego to remain childless until the trust's lawyers approved the genetic arrangement.”

Laura stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if the pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen yet.”

“Why not?”

“Because the timing was wrong.”

“What timing?”

Paola didn't answer.

Laura's voice sharpened.

“Tell me.”

Paola finally looked at her.

“The embryo was already developing before Diego's vasectomy.”

Laura felt a chill.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I saw the lab report.”

“Which lab?”

“Westbrook.”

Laura's breathing stopped.

“You knew I was pregnant before I did?”

“No.”

“I asked you a question.”

Paola looked away.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Your blood sample was part of a genetic panel.”

Laura stared.

“My blood?”

“From a previous routine examination.”

“I never gave them permission.”

“I know.”

“Then how did they get it?”

Paola swallowed.

“Your mother-in-law arranged it.”

Laura's hands began trembling.

“Evelyn stole my blood?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“She had someone request the sample under the pretext of additional testing.”

Laura couldn't speak.

Paola continued.

“The lab discovered the pregnancy.”

“When?”

“Two days before you took the home pregnancy test.”

Laura's heart pounded.

“That's why she knew.”

“Yes.”

“And Diego?”

“He was told.”

“Before I told him?”

Paola nodded.

Laura closed her eyes.

Suddenly the divorce papers made sense.

The timing.

The attorney.

The accusation.

The social media post.

Everything.

Diego hadn't discovered the pregnancy when Laura showed him the test.

He had already known.

He had been waiting.

Laura opened her eyes.

“Why did you help him?”

Paola looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I was protecting myself.”

“From what?”

“Evelyn.”

“What could she do to you?”

“She knew about my family.”

Paola's voice trembled.

“She knew my brother had been treated for the same hereditary condition.”

Laura stared.

“And she threatened you?”

“Yes.”

“What did she threaten?”

“To expose private medical information.”

Laura's expression hardened.

“So you were trapped.”

“Yes.”

“But you still helped her.”

Paola nodded.

“I did.”

“And you helped Diego.”

“Yes.”

“You accessed his medical records.”

“Yes.”

“You scheduled the vasectomy.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered the genetic test.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

Laura's eyes filled.

“Then how are you not part of this?”

Paola looked at her.

“I am.”

That answer surprised Laura.

“I helped build it.”

Paola's voice broke.

“But I didn't know what they intended to do with you.”

Laura remained silent.

“By the time I understood, it was too late.”

“What changed?”

Paola looked toward the cemetery.

“Your pregnancy.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn panicked.”

“Why?”

“Because the baby wasn't supposed to exist.”

Laura stared.

“Why?”

Paola reached into her bag.

Pulled out another document.

She handed it over.

Laura read the first line.

Her heart stopped.

EMBRYO GENETIC RISK ASSESSMENT — CONFIDENTIAL

Underneath:

FETAL SAMPLE: FEMALE

Laura looked up.

“What is this?”

Paola's voice was barely audible.

“Your baby's genetic result.”

Laura's hand went to her stomach.

“You tested my baby?”

“No.”

“I didn't consent to this.”

“I know.”

“Then how?”

Paola shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Laura looked back at the document.

There was a note at the bottom.

EXPECTED BENEFICIARY STATUS: PENDING PATERNITY CONFIRMATION.

Laura's blood ran cold.

“This isn't about Diego proving whether he's the father.”

“No.”

“It's about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“If the baby is his…”

“The child could become a beneficiary.”

“And if the child isn't?”

“The money stays under Evelyn's control.”

Laura finally understood.

The pregnancy wasn't merely a marital problem.

It was a financial threat.

Her unborn child represented access to millions.

And someone had been trying to control that access before the baby was even born.

Laura looked at Paola.

“Who sent me the messages?”

Paola hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

“Then how did you know about the black SUV?”

Paola's face went pale.

“I didn't send the messages.”

“Who did?”

“I don't know.”

“Then who is helping you?”

Paola looked toward the cemetery gate.

“I have to go.”

“No.”

Laura grabbed her wrist.

Paola flinched.

Laura released her immediately.

“Tell me.”

Paola whispered:

“There is someone inside Westbrook who has been copying the records.”

“Who?”

“I don't know his name.”

“What does he look like?”

“Late forties. Gray hair. Security badge.”

Laura frowned.

“That's not enough.”

“He calls himself Mr. Reed.”

“Where can I find him?”

“He'll find you.”

Before Laura could ask another question, Paola walked away.

“Paola!”

She stopped.

Laura called after her.

“Why did you stay with Diego?”

Paola turned.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I was trying to keep him alive.”

Then she walked away.

Laura stood alone.

The wind moved through the trees.

Her mind raced.

A genetic trust.

A stolen medical sample.

A falsified fertility assessment.

A secret compatibility test.

A vasectomy with missing records.

A pregnancy discovered before she knew about it.

And a mysterious man named Reed.

She looked down at the documents.

At the bottom of the genetic assessment was a handwritten notation.

Laura recognized the handwriting immediately.

She had seen it thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

On Christmas gifts.

On envelopes.

It belonged to Evelyn.

The notation said:

IF SHE CONCEIVES, ACTIVATE PLAN B.

Laura's blood turned cold.

She read the sentence again.

Then she noticed something underneath it.

A second line had been crossed out.

Laura held the page toward the sunlight.

The ink beneath the black marker was still faintly visible.

She could make out four words.

REMOVE THE CHILD FROM HER.

Laura stopped breathing.

Her hand instinctively covered her stomach.

The threat wasn't about divorce.

It wasn't about money.

It wasn't even about Diego.

They had planned for the possibility of taking her baby.

And suddenly, the mysterious warning made sense.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO GET PREGNANT.

Laura folded the papers carefully.

She returned to her car.

Before starting the engine, she called Dr. Salinas.

“Doctor.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to do something for me.”

“What?”

“Find out who requested the genetic testing on my pregnancy.”

A pause.

“Laura…”

“Please.”

“I already found the request.”

Laura froze.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Who submitted it?”

Dr. Salinas took a breath.

“The request came from a private laboratory.”

“Which one?”

“Not Westbrook.”

“Then where?”

The doctor gave her the name.

Laura recognized it.

It was the same laboratory listed on the divorce documents.

The same laboratory that was supposed to perform the DNA test.

Laura's heart sank.

“Doctor…”

“Yes?”

“Cancel the test.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't trust the laboratory.”

Another silence.

Then Dr. Salinas said:

“I was afraid you'd say that.”

“Why?”

“Because the lab called me this morning.”

“What did they want?”

“They asked whether you were still planning to proceed.”

Laura's pulse quickened.

“And what did you tell them?”

“I told them I couldn't answer without speaking to you.”

Laura closed her eyes.

“Good.”

Then Dr. Salinas said:

“Laura, there's something else.”

“What?”

“The person who requested the DNA test isn't Diego.”

Laura's eyes opened.

“Who is it?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then gave her the name.

Evelyn Rivera.

Laura gripped the steering wheel.

Her mother-in-law wasn't waiting for a paternity test.

She was controlling it.

And that meant the test was never designed to discover the truth.

It was designed to produce a result someone wanted.

Laura started the engine.

She knew what she had to do next.

Find the original surgical record.

Find the real laboratory.

Find Mr. Reed.

And most importantly—

find out exactly what Evelyn believed was inside Laura's unborn child.

Because if the family trust was worth what Paola claimed…

then Laura's baby wasn't simply an heir.

The baby was the key.

May you like

And Evelyn Rivera had already activated Plan B.

The only question was what she intended to do next.
