CHAPTER 10 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Laura couldn't move.
The name glowing on the screen seemed impossible.
GABRIEL RIVERA.
Her father's face had gone completely white.
Reed stared at the phone as if it were a bomb.
Dr. Bell whispered:
“He's alive.”
Laura looked at him.
“You said he disappeared.”
“I said we never found him.”
“You knew?”
Bell shook his head.
“I suspected.”
Laura's eyes remained fixed on the phone.
“Then why is his phone here?”
Nobody answered.
Finally, her father reached toward it.
Laura stopped him.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Laura—”
“Don't touch it.”
The ringing stopped.
Silence.
Then the phone lit up again.
INCOMING CALL — GABRIEL RIVERA
Laura's heart hammered.
She reached down.
Picked it up.
Her father's voice became urgent.
“Don't answer.”
Laura stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because we don't know who's holding it.”
She pressed the answer button.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a man's voice.
Older.
Deep.
Tired.
“Laura?”
She stopped breathing.
“Who is this?”
The man exhaled.
“Your mother used to call you Little Bird.”
Laura's eyes filled with tears.
Only one person had ever called her that.
Her mother.
“Who are you?”
The voice went quiet.
Then:
“I'm the man your father spent twenty-eight years trying to find.”
Laura looked at her father.
His eyes closed.
“Gabriel?”
“Yes.”
Her knees nearly gave way.
“Where are you?”
“Not far.”
“Why did you disappear?”
“Because I was told you were dead.”
Laura froze.
“What?”
Gabriel's voice became strained.
“Evelyn told me the baby had died.”
Laura looked down at the photograph in her hand.
The photograph of herself as an infant.
Her father whispered:
“Laura…”
She ignored him.
“Which baby?”
Gabriel didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Mine.”
Laura's heart stopped.
“You're my father?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Everything inside her seemed to collapse.
Laura stared at the phone.
Her father was standing only a few feet away.
She looked at him.
“You knew.”
He couldn't deny it anymore.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“You knew Gabriel was my biological father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew all these years.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me believe you were my father.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I raised you.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
“I loved you.”
“That isn't what I asked!”
Her voice echoed through the parking garage.
Everyone went silent.
Laura's father lowered his head.
“Yes.”
He whispered it.
“I knew.”
Laura felt betrayed in a way she had never experienced before.
She had spent her entire life believing the man standing beside her was her biological father.
The man who taught her to ride a bicycle.
The man who walked her down the aisle.
The man who had held her after her mother died.
And now she was learning that another man had given her the blood running through her veins.
Gabriel.
A Rivera.
The family she had spent years trying to escape.
Laura brought the phone back to her ear.
“Why didn't you come for me?”
Gabriel's breathing was heavy.
“Because I thought you were dead.”
“You saw the photograph.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
“Because Evelyn told me the child had died during delivery.”
Laura's heart sank.
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make me disappear.”
“Why would she want you gone?”
“Because I knew what she had done.”
“What?”
Gabriel was silent.
Then:
“I knew about the trust.”
Laura's pulse quickened.
“The genetic trust?”
“Yes.”
“I know about the missing baby.”
“You know too much already.”
Laura stared at the photograph.
“You said you were my father.”
“I am.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Gabriel took a breath.
“The baby Evelyn claimed had died wasn't your sister.”
Laura froze.
Her father's face changed.
Dr. Bell closed his eyes.
Laura whispered:
“Then who was she?”
Gabriel answered:
“You.”
The world seemed to tilt.
Laura couldn't speak.
Her father stepped toward her.
“Laura, listen to me.”
She backed away.
“No.”
“Please.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You stole my identity.”
“I gave you a life.”
“You gave me a lie!”
Her father stopped.
Laura turned toward Dr. Bell.
“Is it true?”
Bell nodded slowly.
“Your mother took you.”
“From Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn wanted to use you.”
“For the trust?”
“For the research.”
Laura touched her stomach.
“And now she wants my baby.”
“Yes.”
“Because I'm the original Rivera child.”
“Yes.”
Laura looked down at the photograph.
The baby.
Her mother.
Gabriel.
The date.
Everything finally made sense.
But one question remained.
“If I'm the missing child…”
She looked at Bell.
“Who was my sister?”
Bell's expression became grim.
“Your mother adopted another child.”
Laura frowned.
“Why?”
“To make everyone believe the original baby had been taken.”
“Then the girl who died…”
“Was not your biological sister.”
Laura stared.
“She was a decoy.”
“Yes.”
Laura's stomach turned.
“They used an innocent child?”
Bell nodded.
“Your mother believed she was protecting you.”
“And Evelyn?”
“She believed the child was you.”
Laura closed her eyes.
For twenty-eight years, everyone had been chasing the wrong girl.
And now the truth was finally standing in front of them.
The phone crackled.
Gabriel spoke again.
“Laura.”
She lifted it to her ear.
“Yes?”
“You need to leave.”
“Why?”
“They know I've contacted you.”
Laura looked around.
“Who?”
“Evelyn.”
Her father immediately turned toward the parking garage entrance.
Reed did the same.
Several headlights appeared.
One.
Two.
Three.
Cars were entering the garage.
Laura's heart raced.
Gabriel continued:
“She will come for you.”
Laura whispered:
“Why?”
“Because you are the only person who can activate the trust.”
“What?”
“The trust was never activated.”
“Then why does Evelyn control it?”
“She doesn't.”
Laura frowned.
“Who does?”
Gabriel's answer was barely audible.
“You.”
Laura stared.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your mother transferred the controlling interest before she died.”
Laura looked at her father.
He nodded slowly.
“It's true.”
Gabriel continued.
“You are the legal successor.”
Laura felt dizzy.
“But I never signed anything.”
“You didn't need to.”
“Then why are they trying to take my baby?”
“Because your baby is the next successor.”
Laura's hand instinctively covered her stomach.
“They want the baby to be born under Rivera custody.”
“Yes.”
“So they can control the trust.”
“Yes.”
“But if I'm alive…”
“They lose control.”
Laura understood.
Her existence was the threat.
Not her pregnancy.
Not Diego.
Her.
Then another voice came through the phone.
A woman's voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Hello, Laura.”
Laura froze.
Evelyn.
She was listening.
Gabriel's voice disappeared.
The line went dead.
Laura slowly lowered the phone.
Her father looked at her.
“What did she say?”
“Nothing.”
Then the elevator doors opened.
Evelyn stepped out.
She wasn't alone.
Two men followed her.
She wore a cream-colored coat.
Her expression was calm.
Almost maternal.
“Laura.”
Laura stared at her.
“You knew.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I knew everything.”
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Gabriel was my father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother took me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was the missing child.”
Evelyn nodded.
“For twenty-eight years.”
Laura's voice trembled.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you were safer not knowing.”
“You don't get to decide that.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
Evelyn's eyes moved to Laura's stomach.
“Because now there are two of you.”
Laura felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
“Your baby.”
Evelyn smiled.
“That child belongs to the Rivera bloodline.”
“My baby belongs to me.”
“Legally, perhaps.”
She took another step.
“But the trust says otherwise.”
Laura's father moved in front of her.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You should have stayed out of this.”
He answered coldly:
“I made that mistake once.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You made several.”
Laura stared at the woman who had spent months pretending to be concerned about her marriage.
“You arranged the medical records.”
Evelyn didn't deny it.
“Yes.”
“You made Diego believe I cheated.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the vasectomy hadn't been confirmed.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted him to accuse me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To destroy your credibility.”
Laura's eyes narrowed.
“And Paola?”
Evelyn smiled.
“She was useful.”
“Did she know?”
“Eventually.”
“Did you threaten her?”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“She knew what would happen if she refused.”
Laura felt a wave of anger.
“You destroyed everyone's lives.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Laura.
“I preserved my family's future.”
“By destroying mine?”
“Your life was built on a stolen identity.”
Laura flinched.
“You stole me from my mother?”
“No.”
Evelyn's voice became cold.
“Your mother stole you from me.”
Laura stared.
“You abandoned me.”
“I was told you were dead.”
“By whom?”
Evelyn's eyes shifted toward Laura's father.
He looked away.
Laura understood.
“My father?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Ask him.”
Laura turned.
Her father stood frozen.
“Dad?”
He said nothing.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father told me the baby had died.”
Laura's heart stopped.
“You did that?”
Her father finally spoke.
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian wanted you.”
“Adrian?”
“Your biological father.”
Laura shook her head.
“Gabriel is my father.”
Her father looked at her.
“No.”
Laura froze.
“What?”
He swallowed.
“Gabriel believes he is.”
She stared.
“What are you saying?”
Her father looked at Dr. Bell.
Bell lowered his head.
Laura's voice became a whisper.
“Who is my biological father?”
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn smiled.
“You see?”
Laura looked at her.
“This is why you should never trust men who claim they know the truth.”
A siren sounded in the distance.
Then another.
Evelyn's men exchanged looks.
Reed stepped forward.
“You need to leave.”
Evelyn ignored him.
She looked at Laura.
“Come with me.”
“No.”
“I can protect you.”
“You tried to destroy me.”
“I tried to protect the Rivera bloodline.”
“I'm not your property.”
“No.”
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
“You're my granddaughter.”
Laura stopped.
“What?”
Evelyn's voice was quiet.
“You heard me.”
Laura stared.
“Gabriel is your son.”
“Yes.”
“And you're…”
“My grandmother.”
The words hit harder than anything else.
Laura suddenly felt trapped between generations of secrets.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You were born into this family.”
“But my mother raised me.”
“She stole you.”
“She loved me.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you let her?”
Evelyn's expression changed.
For the first time, there was something almost human in her eyes.
“Because I thought you were dead.”
Laura stared.
“Then why are you doing this now?”
Evelyn looked at her stomach.
“Because your child gives me one final chance.”
“To control the trust?”
“No.”
“To correct the bloodline.”
Laura's blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she turned toward the elevator.
Before the doors closed, she said:
“Ask Dr. Bell what happened in that operating room.”
Laura looked at Bell.
Evelyn smiled.
“And ask him who paid him.”
The elevator doors closed.
Laura turned slowly.
“Who paid you?”
Bell's face collapsed.
“Laura…”
“Who?”
Her father stepped forward.
“Don't.”
She looked at him.
“You knew.”
He nodded.
“How much?”
“Everything.”
Laura's voice became cold.
“Then tell me.”
Bell took a trembling breath.
“I didn't perform the vasectomy.”
Laura froze.
“What?”
“I was supposed to.”
“But?”
“I was replaced.”
“By whom?”
Bell looked at her.
“Daniel Caldwell.”
Laura felt sick.
“He performed the surgery?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Bell whispered:
“Adrian Rivera.”
Laura's eyes widened.
“Adrian was in the operating room?”
“Yes.”
“But he's supposed to be dead.”
“He wasn't.”
Laura stepped backward.
Her father closed his eyes.
“The man who raised you isn't your father.”
“Gabriel isn't my father.”
“No.”
Laura's heart raced.
“Then who is?”
Her father looked at her.
“Adrian.”
Silence.
Laura couldn't breathe.
“Adrian Rivera is my father?”
“Yes.”
“The man who supposedly disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“The man Evelyn said was dead.”
“Yes.”
“And the man who may still be alive.”
Her father nodded.
Laura looked at the photograph again.
Gabriel.
Her mother.
The baby.
And suddenly she understood why the photograph had never made sense.
Gabriel wasn't holding his daughter.
He was holding his niece.
Laura.
Her mother had been standing beside the baby's real father.
Adrian.
And someone had deliberately removed him from the story.
Laura's phone vibrated again.
A message appeared.
I CAN PROVE IT.
Another message.
MEET ME AT THE OLD RIVERA ESTATE.
No name.
But Laura knew.
Adrian.
Her supposed dead father.
She looked at her father.
“I'm going.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You don't know who sent it.”
“I know enough.”
He grabbed her hand.
“Laura, please.”
She pulled away.
“You lied to me for twenty-eight years.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“Then help me now.”
He stared at her.
Finally, he nodded.
“I'll come.”
Laura looked at Dr. Bell.
“And you.”
Bell shook his head.
“I can't.”
“You're coming.”
He looked frightened.
“Laura…”
“You owe me the truth.”
Bell slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
Reed picked up his jacket.
“I'll drive.”
Laura looked at the dark hospital windows.
Somewhere beyond them was a family she had never known.
A father she had never met.
A grandmother who wanted control over her child.
And a husband whose entire accusation had been built on a lie.
But the deepest mystery remained.
If Adrian Rivera was truly her biological father—
why had he spent twenty-eight years pretending to be dead?
And why had he waited until the moment Laura became pregnant to finally reveal himself?
The old Rivera estate stood at the edge of town.
Abandoned.
Windows boarded.
Iron gates rusted.
The house looked exactly like the photographs Laura had seen in Evelyn's files.
Reed stopped the car.
Laura stepped out.
Her father followed.
Dr. Bell remained inside for a moment.
Then he finally exited.
The front door was already open.
Laura stared.
“Someone's inside.”
Her father nodded.
They entered.
The house smelled of dust and old wood.
A grandfather clock stood frozen at 11:17.
Laura walked into the main hallway.
Then stopped.
There was a photograph on the wall.
A family portrait.
Evelyn.
Adrian.
Gabriel.
And a baby.
Laura stepped closer.
The baby's face had been scratched out.
Someone had tried to erase her.
Then she noticed something underneath the frame.
A small brass plaque.
RIVERA HEIR — 1998
Laura's birth year.
Her father whispered:
“They knew.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Yes.”
Laura turned.
A man stepped into the light.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Thin.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
Laura had seen them in the photograph.
She had seen them in Diego.
And somehow—
she had seen them in herself.
The man stared at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Laura.”
She couldn't speak.
He took one step forward.
“I've waited twenty-eight years to say this.”
Laura's heart pounded.
“What?”
He swallowed.
“I'm your father.”
Laura stood frozen.
Then he said the words that shattered the last piece of her old life.
“And Diego Rivera…”
He looked toward Laura's father.
“…is not my son.”
Laura's blood ran cold.
If that was true—
then the man she had married wasn't merely part of the Rivera conspiracy.
He was an outsider who had been deliberately placed inside her life.
And suddenly, the question wasn't why Diego had accused her of cheating.
May you like
It was much darker.
Who had arranged Laura and Diego's marriage in the first place?
