CHAPTER 4 — The House By the Ocean

CHAPTER 4 — The House By the Ocean
Six months later...
The Montauk house was quiet again.
The windows were open.
Ocean air drifted through the living room.
My grandmother's piano had been restored.
My mother's sapphire necklace rested inside the family safe where it belonged.
The private club project had been canceled.
Instead, the property became the Harper Foundation for Coastal Arts, offering scholarships to young musicians and artists from working families.
It was what my mother had always wanted.
Daniel eventually accepted a plea agreement involving financial fraud, corporate misuse of funds, and tax violations.
Vanessa testified against him.
She received probation and disappeared from public life.
Neither of them ever returned to the house.
One autumn afternoon, Maya visited with coffee.
"You know," she said, looking toward the ocean, "people still ask how you stayed so calm."
I smiled.
"I wasn't calm."
"No?"
"I was prepared."
She laughed.
"There's a difference."
"There always is."
The waves rolled onto the shore.
For the first time in years, I realized the house felt like home again.
May you like
Not because Daniel was gone.
Because I no longer carried the weight of waiting for him to change.
