CHAPTER 3 — When the Masks Fell

CHAPTER 3 — When the Masks Fell
Daniel chased me into the private hallway behind the ballroom.
"Claire!"
His voice cracked for the first time in years.
"You planned this."
"Yes."
"You wanted to humiliate me."
I shook my head.
"I wanted to stop protecting you."
His anger vanished almost instantly.
It was replaced by panic.
"You can't do this."
"I already did."
"What about everything we've built?"
"You built it with my money."
His shoulders slumped.
"I made mistakes."
"You built a second life."
"It didn't mean anything."
"Eighteen months."
Private jets.
Luxury resorts.
Hidden companies.
Offshore accounts.
"It meant something."
Vanessa appeared at the end of the hallway.
Mascara streaked down her cheeks.
"You told me the house belonged to you."
Daniel said nothing.
"You promised the company would be ours."
Still nothing.
"You said she had no control."
He lowered his eyes.
Vanessa laughed once.
A short, broken laugh filled with disbelief.
"You lied to both of us."
She slipped the engagement ring from her finger.
It struck the marble floor between them.
Neither one picked it up.
Security approached quietly.
"Mr. Harper..."
"We'll need you to come with us."
He looked back at me one last time.
"I loved you."
I answered honestly.
"You loved being admired."
Then he walked away.
Not as a CEO.
May you like
Not as a husband.
Just another man leaving through the service exit while reporters waited outside.
