The ballroom remained silent.
No one reached for a champagne glass.
No one whispered.
Every eye stayed fixed on the single sheet of paper in my hand.
Daniel forced another practiced smile.
"Claire," he said into his microphone, "there's no need to make tonight any more uncomfortable."
I looked at him as though he were a stranger.
"No," I answered. "Tonight should finally become honest."
I handed the document to the event coordinator standing beside the stage.
"Please display this."
A few seconds later, the enormous screen behind Daniel went black.
Then a legal document appeared.
NOTICE OF REMOVAL
Daniel Harper was no longer Chief Executive Officer.
Effective immediately.
The room erupted.
Board members stood.
Investors leaned toward one another.
Vanessa's confident smile disappeared.
Daniel spun toward the screen.
"What is this?"
"My family founded Harper Coastal Development," I replied.
"My grandfather owned fifty-one percent of the voting shares."
I paused.
"When he died... he left them to me."
The silence became even heavier.
Daniel blinked.
"No..."
"You signed every shareholder agreement yourself."
Maya stepped onto the stage carrying the second folder.
"You were always the CEO," she said calmly.
"But you were never the owner."
Daniel grabbed the papers.
He flipped through page after page.
Each signature belonged to him.
Each clause had been there for years.
He had simply never bothered to read them.
Vanessa slowly stepped backward.
She realized she was standing beside a man whose empire had just vanished.
Then Maya spoke again.
"There is one more matter."
The security footage filled the screen.
Vanessa walking through my mother's private room.
Daniel unlocking the east wing.
The safe.
The sapphire necklace.
The timestamp.
The police report.
No one in the ballroom spoke.
The applause started with a single investor.
Within seconds, it spread through the entire room.
