PART 6 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MONEY

Ryan stood in the doorway.
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His hair was disheveled.
There was a small cut above his eyebrow.
But his eyes—
his eyes were calm.
Too calm.
“Claire.”
I stared at him.
“You need to leave.”
He didn't move.
“I came to see my wife.”
“You're not my husband anymore.”
Something flickered across his face.
Anger.
Then it disappeared.
“You don't mean that.”
“I do.”
He looked at my stomach.
“How's the baby?”
I stepped backward.
“Don't look at my child.”
His jaw tightened.
“Claire, you're making a mistake.”
“My mistake was trusting you.”
He swallowed.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
I almost laughed.
“Your father burned my pregnant stomach.”
“I know.”
“You held me down.”
“I was scared.”
“You stole my money.”
“I didn't.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I didn't.”
“You took out a ten-million-dollar policy on me.”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
He knew.
I turned toward the detective.
“Arrest him.”
Ryan immediately looked at the detective.
“You don't have the authority.”
The detective stepped forward.
“Actually, we do.”
Ryan smiled.
“No.”
He reached into his jacket.
The detective drew his weapon.
“Slowly.”
Ryan pulled out a folder.
Not a weapon.
He placed it on the table.
“Medical records.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He opened the folder.
“You've been under severe emotional distress for months.”
My attorney snatched the folder.
“What is this?”
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
Ryan looked at me.
“That Claire is unstable.”
My stomach dropped.
He continued.
“She has been experiencing episodes of paranoia.”
I stared at him.
“You're insane.”
He smiled sadly.
“See?”
The detective's expression hardened.
“Enough.”
Ryan looked at him.
“I'm not threatening anyone.”
He pointed toward the documents.
“I'm protecting my child.”
My attorney slammed the folder shut.
“You've fabricated medical records.”
“No.”
“You've manipulated doctors.”
“No.”
“You've forged signatures.”
“No.”
“Then why does this exist?”
Ryan leaned closer.
“Because Claire has been unstable.”
The detective stepped between us.
“Leave.”
Ryan didn't move.
Then he looked at me.
“Ask yourself why your mother disappeared.”
My blood froze.
He knew.
Of course he knew.
“You met her.”
His eyes changed.
“Who told you?”
“So you admit it.”
He said nothing.
“You met my mother before our wedding.”
Silence.
“Did you?”
Ryan looked away.
That was enough.
I whispered:
“How much did she pay you?”
He looked back at me.
“She didn't.”
“Then why did you send her twelve million dollars?”
His face went pale.
My attorney smiled.
“We found the transfers.”
Ryan's breathing changed.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
He couldn't.
I stepped closer.
“You married me for my money.”
“No.”
“You married me because of my mother.”
“No.”
“You knew she was alive.”
Ryan finally shouted:
“Because she asked me to!”
The room went silent.
Ryan realized what he'd said.
My heart pounded.
“Asked you to do what?”
He looked at the floor.
“Protect you.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She knew your father was coming back.”
My attorney frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan rubbed his face.
“I was supposed to keep you safe.”
“By stealing forty-three million dollars?”
“I was moving it.”
“To where?”
“Somewhere your father couldn't reach.”
My father's words returned.
Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.
I stared at Ryan.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother told me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew you'd never believe her.”
“Believe what?”
Ryan's eyes filled with something I had never seen before.
Fear.
“Your mother didn't fake her death to escape your father.”
I whispered:
“Then why?”
He looked directly at me.
“She faked her death because she was investigating him.”
My attorney went still.
“Investigating what?”
Ryan answered:
“Money.”
“How much?”
“More than forty-three million.”
The detective asked:
“How much more?”
Ryan looked at me.
“Two hundred million.”
My knees nearly gave out.
My attorney caught me.
Ryan continued.
“Your father built his fortune using stolen assets.”
I shook my head.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“He was a businessman.”
“He was a criminal.”
“No.”
“Claire, your mother discovered the accounts.”
I couldn't speak.
“She tried to expose him.”
“What happened?”
“She disappeared.”
“You said she faked her death.”
“She did.”
“Why didn't she come back for me?”
Ryan looked broken.
“Because your father threatened to kill you.”
I covered my mouth.
Ryan stepped closer.
“I was supposed to protect you until she could return.”
“You protected me?”
He looked at my burned stomach.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I failed.”
I stared at him.
For one second, I almost believed him.
Then my attorney spoke.
“There's one problem.”
Ryan looked at him.
“You're lying.”
Ryan's face hardened.
“About what?”
My attorney opened his laptop.
“The money wasn't moved to protect Claire.”
He turned the screen toward Ryan.
“It was moved into accounts controlled by Grant Bennett.”
Ryan went pale.
My attorney clicked again.
“And we traced the final destination.”
The detective leaned over.
“Where?”
My attorney looked at me.
“The $43 million went into one account.”
“Whose?”
He answered:
“Evelyn Bennett.”
My mother's account.
I felt the room disappear.
Ryan whispered:
“That's impossible.”
My attorney stared at him.
“No.”
He clicked one final file.
“This transfer happened yesterday.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
“Yesterday?”
“Yes.”
My attorney turned the laptop toward me.
The account was active.
Not dormant.
Not closed.
Active.
And beside the latest transaction was a note.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
PAYMENT RECEIVED — FINAL PHASE BEGINS AFTER CLAIRE'S DELIVERY.
My blood ran cold.
My mother hadn't simply been watching.
She had been moving money.
Planning something.
And the final phase—
was waiting for my baby to be born.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
TRANSFER OF CLAIRE BENNETT'S ENTIRE ESTATE TO EVELYN BENNETT — PENDING.
I looked at Ryan.
He looked terrified.
For the first time that night—
I realized he might not be the most dangerous person in the room.
And my mother—
May you like
the woman I had mourned for twenty years—
might be waiting for my child to be born for a reason none of us had understood.
