Chapter 20 — The Sister Who Was Supposed to Replace Me

Tiếp tục trực tiếp từ Chapter 18, với bí mật của Black Ledger được mở ra.

Claire stared at the first page.

There were hundreds of names.

Judges.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Police commanders.

Corporate executives.

People who had spent twenty years pretending they had never heard of Daniel Bennett.

Now their names were written in black ink.

Beside each name was a date.

An amount.

And a transaction.

Claire turned another page.

Her stomach tightened.

“Forty-three million.”

Ethan looked over her shoulder.

“That’s the money they took from you.”

“No.”

Claire pointed to the page.

“This says the money came from my mother’s trust.”

Elena nodded.

“Daniel didn't steal your fortune.”

Claire looked at her.

“He stole yours.”

“Yes.”

“And then he built his empire with it.”

“Yes.”

Claire turned another page.

Then another.

The numbers became larger.

$91 million.

$126 million.

$287 million.

$612 million.

Her hands began shaking.

“The $612 million…”

Elena whispered:

“Was only the original principal.”

Claire looked up.

“How much is it worth now?”

Elena didn't answer.

Ethan did.

“More than three billion.”

Silence.

Ryan lowered his head.

Claire looked at him.

“You knew.”

“I knew there was money.”

“You knew it was billions.”

“I didn't know the total.”

“But you knew enough to marry me.”

Ryan flinched.

“I knew enough to be afraid.”

Claire turned back to the ledger.

A page near the middle contained three columns.

ELENA MARLOW — ORIGINAL HOLDER.

CLAIRE MARLOW — PROTECTED BENEFICIARY.

UNNAMED CHILD — SUCCESSOR.

Claire stopped breathing.

“Why is my name only protected beneficiary?”

Elena walked toward her.

“Because you weren't supposed to inherit.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“Then why did Daniel spend years trying to control me?”

“Because he believed you knew where the successor was.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

Claire stared at the third line.

“The unnamed child.”

Elena nodded.

“Daniel spent twenty-eight years looking for that child.”

Claire suddenly remembered Daniel's words.

The child your mother tried to hide.

She looked at Ryan.

“You said Daniel showed you three files before our wedding.”

“Yes.”

“What was in the third file?”

Ryan's face went pale.

“I never opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me if I did, I'd never survive long enough to marry you.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then why are you alive?”

Ryan looked at her.

“I think he needed me.”

“For what?”

Ryan's eyes shifted to her stomach.

“For the baby.”

The room became silent.

Claire's hand moved protectively over her belly.

Ethan suddenly noticed something inside the ledger.

A small envelope had been hidden between two pages.

He pulled it out.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A newborn baby.

Elena was holding the child.

But beside her stood another woman.

Claire recognized her immediately.

“That's Evelyn.”

Elena nodded.

“She helped me escape.”

Claire stared at the photograph.

“But Evelyn raised me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was coming for you.”

Claire looked at the baby in the photograph.

Something about the face felt strangely familiar.

Then she noticed the bracelet around the baby's wrist.

A tiny silver charm.

A crescent moon.

Claire touched her own necklace.

The same symbol.

Elena whispered:

“That was your mother's mark.”

Claire looked up.

“Then the baby in the photograph…”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Was not you.”

Claire froze.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Then who?”

Elena looked at him.

“Your sister.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“Sister?”

“A third child.”

Ethan stared at her.

“But you said there were three.”

“There were.”

Claire looked at Ryan.

“Then who is the third child?”

Before Elena could answer, every light inside the vault went black.

A speaker crackled overhead.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

“You finally found the ledger.”

Claire turned toward the ceiling.

Daniel laughed softly.

“But you still haven't found her.”

A red light appeared above the steel door.

Then the screen displayed one sentence:

YOUR SISTER IS ALIVE.

Claire's blood ran cold.

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young woman.

Twenty-eight years old.

Dark hair.

Pale eyes.

And the same crescent-moon birthmark Claire carried beneath her collarbone.

Under the photograph was one name.

VANESSA MARLOW.

Ryan whispered:

“Oh God.”

Claire turned toward him.

“You know her.”

Ryan didn't answer.

“Ryan.”

His eyes filled with fear.

“Yes.”

Claire's voice became cold.

“Who is Vanessa?”

Ryan whispered:

“She was supposed to be your replacement.”

Claire couldn't move.

“Your replacement?”

Ryan nodded.

“I didn't know the whole story.”

“You knew enough.”

“I met her once.”

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

“At Daniel's private estate.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“What did she look like?”

Ryan stared at him.

“Like Claire.”

Ethan's face changed.

“Exactly?”

“Almost.”

Claire looked at Elena.

“Why did she need a replacement?”

Elena's expression broke.

“Because Daniel needed someone who could activate the trust.”

Claire understood.

“The successor.”

Elena nodded.

“Vanessa was raised believing she was the rightful heir.”

Claire looked at the photograph again.

“But she wasn't.”

“No.”

“Then why does she have my birthmark?”

Elena looked down.

“Because she is your identical twin.”

The words hit Claire harder than any physical blow.

Ethan stepped backward.

“You said there were three children.”

“There were.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“Claire and Vanessa were twins.”

Claire stared at the photograph.

“And Ethan?”

Elena looked at him.

“Ethan was born minutes later.”

Ethan's expression collapsed.

“I was the third?”

“Yes.”

Claire felt the pieces finally coming together.

Three children.

Two girls.

One boy.

Daniel had taken all three.

But he hadn't treated them equally.

Claire had been hidden with Evelyn.

Ethan had been sent to an institution.

And Vanessa—

“Where is she?”

Elena looked toward Daniel's photograph on the screen.

“I don't know.”

The speaker crackled.

Daniel answered.

“I do.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel's voice continued.

“She is closer than you think.”

The vault door suddenly unlocked.

Ryan stood.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Ryan was staring at the doorway.

“She found us.”

A woman's voice came from the darkness.

“Of course I did.”

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Calm.

A woman stepped into the red light.

Twenty-eight years old.

Dark hair.

Pale eyes.

The crescent birthmark visible against her neck.

Claire stared at her own face.

Vanessa smiled.

“Hello, Claire.”

Claire couldn't speak.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“And hello, little brother.”

Ethan whispered:

“You're alive.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Daniel made sure I was.”

Claire's eyes hardened.

“You're working for him.”

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“No.”

She reached into her coat.

Ryan moved in front of Claire.

Vanessa immediately raised a hand.

“If I wanted her dead, Ryan, she wouldn't have made it into this vault.”

Ryan froze.

Claire stared at Vanessa.

“Then why are you here?”

Vanessa pulled out a second black ledger.

“Because Daniel lied to all of us.”

She placed it on the table.

“This is the real ledger.”

Elena's face went pale.

“No.”

Vanessa opened it.

Inside was a birth record.

Three names.

Three fingerprints.

Three DNA signatures.

Claire looked down.

Then her eyes widened.

One of the fingerprints didn't match the birth certificate.

“What's wrong?”

Vanessa pointed to the document.

“Claire was never registered as Claire Marlow.”

Claire stared at her.

“What?”

“You were registered under another name.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“What name?”

Vanessa slowly turned the page.

Claire saw it.

Her entire body went cold.

The name printed beneath her original fingerprint was:

ELENA MARLOW JR.

Claire looked at her mother.

“That makes no sense.”

Elena began crying.

“I know.”

“Why was I registered as you?”

“Because Daniel wanted the world to believe you were dead.”

Claire stared at the page.

Then she saw something else.

A second document.

A transfer order.

Signed by Daniel.

But the signature wasn't the only thing that shocked her.

The recipient was listed as:

RYAN BENNETT.

Claire slowly looked at her husband.

Ryan's face went white.

“I didn't sign that.”

Vanessa whispered:

“You didn't.”

She turned the document around.

“Daniel forged your signature too.”

Ryan stared.

“Then why?”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“Because Ryan wasn't supposed to marry you.”

Claire's heart sank.

“Then who was?”

Vanessa closed the ledger.

“The man Daniel originally chose.”

Claire frowned.

“Who?”

Vanessa looked toward the vault entrance.

A shadow appeared.

A man's voice spoke from the darkness.

“You've been asking the wrong questions for twenty-eight years.”

Claire turned.

The man stepped into the light.

Daniel was standing behind him.

And beside Daniel was someone Claire had never expected to see.

Mason Reed.

Her former CFO.

The man she had trusted with every dollar she owned.

Claire's face went pale.

Mason smiled.

“I'm sorry, Claire.”

Daniel placed one hand on his shoulder.

“He was never your CFO.”

Claire whispered:

“Then who was he?”

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

“My first choice.”

The vault door slammed shut behind them.

May you like

And Claire realized the conspiracy had never ended.

It had only been waiting for her to find the truth.
