Chapter 19 — The Names in the Ledger

Claire stared at the first page.
There were hundreds of names.
Judges.
Bankers.
Politicians.
Police commanders.
Corporate executives.
People who had spent twenty years pretending they had never heard of Daniel Bennett.
Now their names were written in black ink.
Beside each name was a date.
An amount.
And a transaction.
Claire turned another page.
Her stomach tightened.
“Forty-three million.”
Ethan looked over her shoulder.
“That’s the money they took from you.”
“No.”
Claire pointed to the page.
“This says the money came from my mother’s trust.”
Elena nodded.
“Daniel didn't steal your fortune.”
Claire looked at her.
“He stole yours.”
“Yes.”
“And then he built his empire with it.”
“Yes.”
Claire turned another page.
Then another.
The numbers became larger.
$91 million.
$126 million.
$287 million.
$612 million.
Her hands began shaking.
“The $612 million…”
Elena whispered:
“Was only the original principal.”
Claire looked up.
“How much is it worth now?”
Elena didn't answer.
Ethan did.
“More than three billion.”
Silence.
Ryan lowered his head.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was money.”
“You knew it was billions.”
“I didn't know the total.”
“But you knew enough to marry me.”
Ryan flinched.
“I knew enough to be afraid.”
Claire turned back to the ledger.
A page near the middle contained three columns.
ELENA MARLOW — ORIGINAL HOLDER.
CLAIRE MARLOW — PROTECTED BENEFICIARY.
UNNAMED CHILD — SUCCESSOR.
Claire stopped breathing.
“Why is my name only protected beneficiary?”
Elena walked toward her.
“Because you weren't supposed to inherit.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“Then why did Daniel spend years trying to control me?”
“Because he believed you knew where the successor was.”
“I didn't.”
“I know.”
Claire stared at the third line.
“The unnamed child.”
Elena nodded.
“Daniel spent twenty-eight years looking for that child.”
Claire suddenly remembered Daniel's words.
The child your mother tried to hide.
She looked at Ryan.
“You said Daniel showed you three files before our wedding.”
“Yes.”
“What was in the third file?”
Ryan's face went pale.
“I never opened it.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel told me if I did, I'd never survive long enough to marry you.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Then why are you alive?”
Ryan looked at her.
“I think he needed me.”
“For what?”
Ryan's eyes shifted to her stomach.
“For the baby.”
The room became silent.
Claire's hand moved protectively over her belly.
Ethan suddenly noticed something inside the ledger.
A small envelope had been hidden between two pages.
He pulled it out.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A newborn baby.
Elena was holding the child.
But beside her stood another woman.
Claire recognized her immediately.
“That's Evelyn.”
Elena nodded.
“She helped me escape.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
“But Evelyn raised me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel was coming for you.”
Claire looked at the baby in the photograph.
Something about the face felt strangely familiar.
Then she noticed the bracelet around the baby's wrist.
A tiny silver charm.
A crescent moon.
Claire touched her own necklace.
The same symbol.
Elena whispered:
“That was your mother's mark.”
Claire looked up.
“Then the baby in the photograph…”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Was not you.”
Claire froze.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Then who?”
Elena looked at him.
“Your sister.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“Sister?”
“A third child.”
Ethan stared at her.
“But you said there were three.”
“There were.”
Claire looked at Ryan.
“Then who is the third child?”
Before Elena could answer, every light inside the vault went black.
A speaker crackled overhead.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
“You finally found the ledger.”
Claire turned toward the ceiling.
Daniel laughed softly.
“But you still haven't found her.”
A red light appeared above the steel door.
Then the screen displayed one sentence:
YOUR SISTER IS ALIVE.
Claire's blood ran cold.
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A young woman.
Twenty-eight years old.
Dark hair.
Pale eyes.
And the same crescent-moon birthmark Claire carried beneath her collarbone.
Under the photograph was one name.
VANESSA MARLOW.
Ryan whispered:
“Oh God.”
Claire turned toward him.
“You know her.”
Ryan didn't answer.
“Ryan.”
His eyes filled with fear.
“Yes.”
Claire's voice became cold.
“Who is Vanessa?”
May you like
Ryan whispered:
“She was supposed to be your replacement.”
