PART 16 — THE BROTHER BEHIND THE DOOR

The old Bennett estate stood beyond a line of dead trees.

It had been abandoned for years.

At least, that's what everyone believed.

The iron gate was rusted.

The windows were dark.

The house looked empty.

But there were fresh tire tracks in the driveway.

Someone was living here.

The detective raised his weapon.

“Stay behind us.”

I stepped out of the vehicle.

My attorney grabbed my arm.

“Claire.”

“I need to know.”

“We'll find out.”

“No.”

I looked at the house.

“My brother is inside.”

The detective signaled his team.

Two officers moved toward the entrance.

The front door opened before they reached it.

A man stepped outside.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Thin.

His face was pale.

But his eyes—

I knew those eyes.

My eyes.

He stared at me.

Neither of us moved.

Then he whispered:

“Claire.”

My breath caught.

“Ethan?”

He nodded.

My mother began crying.

Ethan looked at her.

“You came.”

She covered her mouth.

“I promised.”

“You promised twenty-eight years ago.”

“I know.”

He looked at me again.

“You don't remember me.”

“No.”

“I remember you.”

My heart tightened.

“How?”

“I saw you once.”

“When?”

“When we were children.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“Daniel showed me photographs.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted me to hate you.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because he told me you had everything.”

My voice broke.

“I didn't know you existed.”

“I know.”

We stood facing each other.

Two strangers.

Connected by blood.

Separated by a lie.

Then Ethan looked at my stomach.

“That's your child?”

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

“Then it's almost time.”

My blood ran cold.

“Almost time for what?”

“The Ledger.”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

Ethan looked at the detective.

Then my attorney.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because this house is wired.”

The detective immediately looked around.

“Where?”

Ethan pointed toward the walls.

“Everywhere.”

The officers began scanning the room.

Hidden microphones.

Cameras.

Recording devices.

My stomach twisted.

“Daniel is watching us?”

Ethan nodded.

“He has been watching this house for twenty years.”

My attorney frowned.

“Then why bring Claire here?”

“Because Daniel expects us to come.”

I stared at him.

“That's not reassuring.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“It's not supposed to be.”

He walked inside.

We followed.

The house smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Smoke.

Then Ethan stopped in front of a fireplace.

He touched a brick.

Nothing happened.

He touched another.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a metal cylinder.

He removed it.

“This belonged to our mother.”

My mother stepped forward.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“It wasn't.”

Ethan handed it to me.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

I unfolded it.

My mother's handwriting.

If Claire ever finds Ethan, the first question she must ask is not where the money is.

I read the next line.

Ask why Daniel was afraid of two children instead of one.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

My mother did.

“Because Daniel couldn't control both of you.”

“What did he control?”

“Your identity.”

Ethan continued:

“He created two separate lives.”

“For us?”

“Yes.”

“You were Ethan Marlow.”

“And you were Claire Bennett.”

“Why?”

“Because the inheritance was divided.”

My attorney looked confused.

“Between the twins?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Between the parents.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Your biological mother's family created the trust.”

He pointed at me.

“You were supposed to receive one half.”

Then he pointed to himself.

“I was supposed to receive the other.”

My heart pounded.

“And Daniel?”

“He wanted both.”

My attorney understood.

“So Project Claire wasn't just about Claire.”

“No.”

“It was about locating Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“And controlling both heirs.”

Ethan nodded.

“But Daniel couldn't find me.”

I looked at him.

“How did you survive?”

“I ran.”

“From the institution?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“And you've been hiding here?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To find evidence.”

“Did you?”

Ethan looked at the metal cylinder.

“Enough.”

He opened another compartment.

Inside was a small drive.

“The Black Ledger.”

My heart stopped.

“This is it?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“The key to it.”

He handed the drive to my attorney.

“Only your DNA can activate the first half.”

“And yours?”

“The second.”

My attorney looked between us.

“Both signatures are required.”

Ethan nodded.

“Daniel spent twenty-eight years trying to separate us because together we're stronger than he is.”

I looked at my brother.

“Then why didn't you come to me?”

“Because Ryan was watching you.”

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Ryan.

Everything led back to him.

“Did he know you were here?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell Daniel?”

“No.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Then why did Ryan betray me?”

“Because he was given a choice.”

“What choice?”

Ethan looked away.

“Your life or mine.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“Daniel told Ryan that if he didn't control you, he'd kill me.”

I looked toward the door.

Ryan had been protecting Ethan.

But he'd hurt me to do it.

That didn't excuse him.

But suddenly his actions had a different shape.

Then the lights turned on.

All of them.

At once.

The detective raised his weapon.

A voice came from the staircase.

“You've finally found each other.”

I knew that voice.

Daniel.

My father stepped into view.

He was holding a gun.

Behind him stood Grant.

And behind Grant—

Ryan.

But Ryan wasn't holding a weapon.

His hands were tied.

Daniel smiled.

“Now we can finish what I started twenty-eight years ago.”

My mother stepped in front of me.

Daniel pointed the gun at her.

“Move.”

She didn't.

“You already took my children once.”

Daniel smiled.

“I only took one.”

My heart stopped.

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Daniel.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel's smile widened.

“Because Ethan wasn't the second child.”

Silence.

Ethan froze.

My mother went pale.

Daniel looked directly at me.

“The boy you just found isn't your twin.”

My blood ran cold.

“Then who is he?”

Daniel raised the gun.

“He's the child who was supposed to inherit everything.”

I stared at Ethan.

The room went silent.

Then Daniel said the words that shattered everything:

“And Claire…”

May you like

He smiled.

“You were never part of the original inheritance.”
