Chapter 4 - Richard Whitmore’s Empire Begins to Collapse

Richard Whitmore had built his entire life around appearances.

The perfect house.

The perfect family.

The perfect reputation.

But by Monday morning…

the cracks started showing.

The first sign came at 8:15 AM.

His assistant rushed into his office holding a tablet.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Richard looked up.

“What?”

The assistant hesitated.

That alone worried him.

People who worked for Richard Whitmore did not hesitate.

“What happened?”

“The Hayes Group has officially withdrawn from negotiations.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?”

The assistant swallowed.

“The partnership agreement is terminated.”

Richard stood immediately.

“That’s impossible.”

For six months, he had chased Alexander Hayes.

Invitations.

Meetings.

Introductions.

Every conversation had been carefully planned.

And then one night…

Alexander walked into his house and walked away.

Because of Emma.

His jaw tightened.

“Call him.”

“I tried.”

“And?”

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

“He declined.”

Richard stared.

Declined.

Alexander Hayes had never declined a business call from him before.

Because before Thanksgiving…

Richard thought Emma was just his daughter.

Now?

She was Alexander Hayes’s future wife.

And suddenly, she was untouchable.

The second sign came an hour later.

The bank called.

Then another investor.

Then another.

Questions.

Concerns.

Requests for updated financial information.

Richard felt the pressure building.

Someone had started looking.

And once people started looking…

they found things.

Across town, Diane Whitmore sat in her living room staring at the television.

She wasn’t watching anything.

She was replaying Thanksgiving.

Emma walking away.

Alexander standing beside her.

The way everyone looked at Emma.

Like she mattered.

Diane hated that most of all.

Not losing control.

Not the embarrassment.

The fact that people finally saw what she had refused to see.

Her daughter was valuable.

Her daughter was powerful.

Her daughter had become everything Diane wanted Vanessa and Logan to be.

Her phone rang.

Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

“What?”

Vanessa’s voice was nervous.

“Mom… have you seen the news?”

Diane frowned.

“What news?”

“About Alexander Hayes.”

Diane sat up.

“What about him?”

“He announced a new acquisition this morning.”

“So?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“It’s connected to Emma’s company.”

The room went silent.

Diane felt something she rarely experienced.

Fear.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I’m saying Emma isn’t just his fiancée.”

A pause.

“She’s his business partner.”

Diane’s fingers tightened around the phone.

Impossible.

Emma?

The daughter who washed dishes?

The daughter who served dinner?

The daughter who stood quietly in the background?

No.

That couldn’t be true.

But then…

Diane remembered something.

Something she ignored.

Years ago.

Emma staying up late.

Working on business plans.

Building spreadsheets.

Taking calls.

While everyone else slept.

She had mistaken silence for weakness.

She had mistaken kindness for stupidity.

And now…

that mistake was becoming expensive.

Meanwhile, inside Alexander’s office, Emma stood before a wall of glass overlooking Manhattan.

“This is insane.”

Alexander looked up from his desk.

“What is?”

“My family is collapsing because of this.”

“No.”

He stood and walked toward her.

“Your family is collapsing because it was already broken.”

Emma looked down.

“I don’t want revenge.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you helping me?”

Alexander stopped.

Because the answer mattered.

“Because someone should have helped you a long time ago.”

Emma looked at him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Alexander continued.

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

He handed her another folder.

This one thinner.

More serious.

Emma opened it.

Inside was one document.

One name.

One signature.

Her blood went cold.

Because it was proof of something she never imagined.

Something her own family had hidden from her for years.

Alexander watched her expression change.

“Emma…”

She looked up.

“What did they do?”

Alexander’s voice was quiet.

“They didn’t just underestimate you.”

A pause.

“They stole from you.”

And for the first time…

May you like

Emma Whitmore realized Thanksgiving wasn’t the end of her family’s betrayal.

It was only the beginning.
