Chapter 10 - The Secret Alexander Kept for Years

I thought I knew everything.

My family’s betrayal.

My stolen shares.

The lies.

The manipulation.

I thought those were the deepest secrets waiting for me.

I was wrong.

Because Alexander had been carrying one more truth.

And when I discovered it…

everything changed.

It happened three days after my father came to see me.

Alexander and I were having dinner at his apartment.

A quiet evening.

No meetings.

No investors.

No family drama.

Just us.

Until he became unusually quiet.

I noticed immediately.

“What?”

He looked up.

“What?”

“You’re thinking about something.”

He smiled slightly.

“You always notice.”

“I learned from watching you.”

That made him laugh softly.

Then the smile disappeared.

“Emma.”

The seriousness in his voice made me put down my glass.

“What happened?”

He reached for a folder.

Again.

I hated folders.

Every time Alexander brought one out, my life changed.

“This is about your family.”

I sighed.

“What now?”

He looked at me.

“This time, it’s not about what they did.”

A pause.

“It’s about what they tried to prevent.”

I frowned.

He handed me the folder.

Inside was an old photograph.

Not a document.

Not a contract.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

And froze.

It was my mother.

Twenty years younger.

Standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.

Behind them was a building.

A company logo.

A name.

Hayes Development.

I looked at Alexander.

“What is this?”

He was silent.

“My father took that photo.”

I stared.

“Your father?”

He nodded.

“My father and Richard Whitmore were business partners.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What are you saying?”

Alexander looked at the picture.

“Before Whitmore Enterprises became successful…”

He paused.

“Your father and my father built something together.”

I waited.

“And then?”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Your father betrayed him.”

I stared.

“How?”

“He stole intellectual property.”

My eyes widened.

“He copied my father’s development model and used it to build Whitmore Enterprises.”

I looked back at the photograph.

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it was.”

The truth felt impossible because it meant my family’s lies went back much further than I realized.

“How long have you known?”

Alexander looked away.

“Since before I met you.”

The words hurt.

Not because he had hidden something.

Because I wondered why.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked at me.

“Because I didn’t want our relationship to begin with you thinking you owed me something.”

I didn’t speak.

“You were already carrying your family’s debt.”

A pause.

“I refused to add mine.”

That answer broke through my anger.

Because he was right.

If I had known on our first date that Alexander’s family had history with mine…

I might have walked away.

Not because I didn’t love him.

Because I would have believed I was another responsibility.

Another problem to solve.

He reached across the table.

“I fell in love with Emma Whitmore.”

Not the heiress.

Not the businesswoman.

Not the daughter of Richard Whitmore.

“You.”

My eyes softened.

“But now you need to know the rest.”

I looked at him.

“What rest?”

Alexander opened another document.

A legal agreement.

Old.

Official.

Signed.

My heart started racing before I even read it.

Because I recognized one name.

Richard Whitmore.

And another.

My mother.

But the third name…

made me stop breathing.

My own.

Alexander watched my expression.

“Emma.”

I looked up.

“What did they sign?”

His answer was quiet.

“They didn’t just steal your company.”

A pause.

“They planned to erase your inheritance before you were even old enough to understand what you owned.”

And suddenly…

the war with my family was no longer about Thanksgiving.

It was about decades of lies.

And this time…

May you like

I wasn’t fighting for their approval.

I was fighting for the truth.
