Chapter 13 - The Deadline That Could Destroy Everything

The letter from Thomas Hayes changed the way I looked at everything.

Before that moment, I believed my family’s betrayal began with greed.

Money.

Power.

Control.

But the letter suggested something else.

Fear.

Someone had not just wanted to steal from me.

Someone had wanted to make sure I never discovered what was mine.

And that meant one terrifying possibility.

Someone had known exactly what I would become.

The next morning, Alexander brought me to Hayes Group’s private archive room.

I had never been there before.

It was hidden beneath the main building.

No cameras.

No employees.

Only restricted access.

The kind of place where companies stored the secrets they never wanted the world to see.

Alexander unlocked a cabinet.

Inside were dozens of files.

Old contracts.

Business records.

Legal documents.

All connected to one name.

Whitmore Enterprises.

I looked at him.

“How long has this existed?”

“Since before I met you.”

My heart tightened.

“Alexander.”

He looked at me.

“I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“My father didn’t leave that letter because he wanted revenge.”

He placed an old document on the table.

“He knew revenge would destroy everyone.”

I opened it.

It was a partnership agreement.

Between Thomas Hayes and Richard Whitmore.

The beginning of everything.

“They were friends.”

Alexander nodded.

“They were.”

“What happened?”

His expression darkened.

“Richard became obsessed with building an empire.”

I looked down.

“That sounds like my father.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But my father believed ambition could exist with loyalty.”

Alexander tapped the document.

“Richard didn’t.”

Thomas Hayes had created the foundation for a revolutionary real estate model.

A development system that combined luxury housing, sustainable design, and long-term investment strategies.

Richard had access.

He had trust.

And then…

he copied it.

He took the concept.

The investors.

The contacts.

And built Whitmore Enterprises from the stolen blueprint.

“But why didn’t your father expose him?”

Alexander looked away.

“Because of me.”

I froze.

“What?”

“My father had a heart condition.”

The room became quiet.

“He was sick. He knew a public fight would destroy both companies.”

“So he let him win?”

“No.”

Alexander looked at me.

“He protected what mattered.”

I stared.

“And what mattered was?”

“You.”

I didn’t understand.

“Me?”

Alexander nodded.

“Your father had already started using your name in company documents.”

My stomach dropped.

“He knew?”

“My father discovered it.”

A pause.

“He realized Richard wasn’t just stealing from him.”

“He was building a future where you would have nothing.”

That afternoon, the board meeting was scheduled.

The most important meeting of my life.

Because Whitmore Enterprises had received a deadline.

Forty-eight hours.

Either they provided proof of legitimate ownership transfers…

or the investigation would move into the next phase.

Criminal review.

Richard knew.

Diane knew.

Everyone knew.

And they were desperate.

Inside the Whitmore mansion, panic had replaced confidence.

Diane walked back and forth across the living room.

“We need to convince Emma.”

Richard sat silently.

“She won’t listen.”

“She’s our daughter.”

Richard looked at her.

“Do you believe that now?”

The question cut deeper than he intended.

Diane stopped.

For years, she had controlled every conversation.

But now…

even Richard was questioning her.

Vanessa sat quietly on the sofa.

Watching.

Learning.

For the first time, she was seeing her parents without the illusion.

Logan looked nervous.

“What happens if she refuses?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The company would fall.

That evening, I received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

You think Alexander saved you. He only showed you half the truth.

I stared at the screen.

My stomach tightened.

A second message arrived.

Ask him why his father waited until death to tell you.

I immediately called Alexander.

He answered.

“Emma?”

“Someone messaged me.”

Silence.

“What did they say?”

I repeated the message.

Alexander didn’t respond.

That scared me.

“Alexander.”

He closed his eyes.

“There is something I didn’t tell you.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“My father didn’t only leave you a letter.”

A pause.

“He left me instructions.”

I stood still.

“Instructions for what?”

May you like

Alexander’s voice became quiet.

“To find the person who betrayed both of our families.”
