Chapter 2 - The Secret Engagement Nobody Knew About

The moment the door closed behind us, I expected to feel guilty.

I didn’t.

I expected tears.

They never came.

Instead, I felt something unfamiliar.

Relief.

Alexander’s black sedan waited at the end of the driveway.

Rain covered the windshield.

The lights from my parents’ mansion reflected against the wet pavement.

For thirty years, that house represented everything I thought I needed.

Approval.

Acceptance.

A place where I belonged.

But tonight I realized something painful.

I had been begging for a home from people who only wanted my help.

Alexander opened the passenger door for me.

I hesitated.

Not because I didn’t want to leave.

Because leaving meant admitting the truth.

My family might never change.

I got inside.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

The city lights passed outside the window.

Finally, Alexander broke the silence.

“You’re angry with me.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“Yes, you are.”

I sighed.

“You weren’t supposed to do that.”

“Do what?”

“Expose them.”

His eyes stayed on the road.

“I didn’t expose them.”

A pause.

“I showed them.”

I looked away.

Because I knew he was right.

“I wanted tonight to be simple.”

Alexander smiled slightly.

“Emma, nothing about your family is simple.”

Despite myself…

I laughed.

A small laugh.

The first real one I had that day.

His expression softened.

“There she is.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The woman I know.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“The woman who argues with executives twice her age.”

“The woman who built a company from nothing.”

“The woman who stayed up three nights fixing a problem that wasn’t even hers.”

His voice became quieter.

“The woman who still apologized to a waiter after someone else spilled wine on her.”

I smiled faintly.

“You remember that?”

“I remember everything about you.”

Those words were dangerous.

Because I wasn’t used to being remembered.

Not like that.

I looked down at the ring on my finger.

The ring I had hidden beneath my sweater whenever I visited my family.

A simple diamond.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

A symbol of the life I had chosen.

Not the life they chose for me.

“My mother is going to hate this.”

Alexander glanced at me.

“She already hates that she doesn’t control you.”

I was quiet.

Because that was the truth I had never wanted to admit.

My mother didn’t dislike my choices.

She disliked losing power over me.

My phone suddenly started ringing.

The screen lit up.

Mother.

I stared at it.

Alexander didn’t say anything.

He didn’t tell me whether to answer.

He just waited.

My finger hovered over the screen.

Then I declined the call.

A second later, another call appeared.

Father.

I declined again.

Then came the messages.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

I opened them.

Emma, come back. We need to talk.

You embarrassed the family tonight.

This is not how problems are solved.

Then one message appeared.

From Diane.

You have no idea what you’ve done.

I stared at the words.

For years, those words would have terrified me.

Tonight?

They didn’t.

Because for the first time…

I knew exactly what I had done.

I had chosen myself.

Alexander reached over and took my hand.

“Tomorrow morning, the world changes.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

He looked ahead.

“It means your family is going to discover something.”

“What?”

A small, serious smile appeared on his face.

“That the daughter they ignored…”

A pause.

“…is the person who can save them.”

I frowned.

“Save them?”

Alexander didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because I knew him.

Alexander Hayes never kept secrets without a reason.

And whatever he knew…

May you like

was bigger than Thanksgiving dinner.

Much bigger.
