CHAPTER 16 THE WOMAN BENEATH THE HOUSE

The countdown continued.
04:29
04:28
04:27
Adrian stared into the open elevator shaft.
Somewhere beneath the estate, his grandmother was alive.
For thirty-four years, he'd believed she was dead.
For thirty-four years, he'd carried a grave that had never contained her.
Now her voice had called him by his childhood name.
Not Adrian.
Not Boss.
Not Heir.
My son.
He stepped toward the elevator.
Maya caught his arm.
“Dad.”
He looked at her.
“We don't know what's down there.”
“I know.”
“Then don't go alone.”
Adrian nodded.
“Stay behind me.”
Maya tightened her grip.
“I'm not leaving you.”
Clara stepped forward.
“Neither am I.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You're coming?”
She smiled sadly.
“I've been waiting thirty-four years.”
Cassian approached the elevator.
“I'll lead.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn't.”
Cassian looked into his eyes.
“But if you want your grandmother alive, you need me.”
The countdown reached:
03:58
Adrian stepped into the elevator.
Everyone followed.
The doors closed.
The elevator began descending.
Nobody spoke.
The numbers on the display dropped.
B2
B3
B4
Then the display went blank.
The elevator continued descending.
Maya looked at Cassian.
“How deep is this?”
“Deep enough.”
“That's not an answer.”
Cassian didn't respond.
Clara leaned against the wall.
“I remember this.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“The elevator.”
“You've been down here before?”
“When I was a child.”
“Why?”
“They brought me here when I was seven.”
Adrian's expression darkened.
“Who?”
“Our grandfather.”
“What did he do?”
Clara looked at him.
“He showed me the room where our grandmother was kept.”
Maya's face tightened.
“She was imprisoned?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she refused to cooperate.”
The elevator continued down.
Clara whispered:
“She told me to run.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Adrian reached for her hand.
“You were a child.”
“So were you.”
“I know.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“That's why I never blamed you.”
The elevator suddenly stopped.
Everyone froze.
The lights went out.
Then a voice came through the speaker.
“Welcome home.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Victor.”
“No.”
The voice was different.
Older.
Female.
Maya looked at Adrian.
“Your grandmother.”
The emergency lights came on.
The doors opened.
The chamber beyond looked nothing like the rest of the estate.
It was clean.
Modern.
Almost futuristic.
Glass walls separated several rooms.
Medical equipment lined the walls.
Machines hummed quietly.
At the center stood a bed.
And on that bed—
an elderly woman.
White hair.
Pale skin.
A thin blanket covering her body.
Her eyes opened.
Adrian stopped.
She smiled.
“Adrian.”
He couldn't move.
Maya whispered:
“Dad…”
He stepped forward.
Slowly.
One step.
Then another.
The woman lifted her hand.
He reached for it.
Her fingers touched his.
Warm.
Real.
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“Grandmother.”
She smiled.
“You grew up.”
His voice broke.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed you to believe it.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather was watching.”
Adrian looked toward Cassian.
“Cassian?”
She nodded.
“Your grandfather feared him.”
Adrian frowned.
“But Cassian said he was protecting you.”
“He was.”
Cassian looked away.
Adrian turned back.
“Then why didn't he save you?”
His grandmother smiled.
“He did.”
“What?”
“He made them believe I died.”
Adrian's face changed.
“Then who was in the grave?”
“Nobody.”
Silence.
Maya stepped closer.
“You knew about us?”
The old woman looked at her.
“Yes.”
“About Lily?”
“Yes.”
“About the experiments?”
Her expression hardened.
“I knew about every child.”
Maya's eyes filled with anger.
“Then why didn't you stop them?”
The old woman looked down.
“I tried.”
“You could have done more.”
“Yes.”
Maya's voice trembled.
“You could have saved them.”
“I know.”
Silence.
“I've spent thirty years knowing that.”
Adrian looked around.
“What is this place?”
“The original laboratory.”
“The first one?”
“Yes.”
“Then why is it still functioning?”
“Because your grandfather never knew I kept it.”
Adrian looked toward the equipment.
“You've been here all this time?”
“No.”
“Then where?”
“Moving.”
“From place to place.”
“Keeping the bloodline hidden.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Why did you let me live with that family?”
“Because I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you chose silence.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid.”
Adrian stared.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“The woman who built the original system.”
“The woman who fought your grandfather.”
“The woman who survived thirty years underground.”
She smiled sadly.
“Fear doesn't disappear because you're brave.”
Adrian looked away.
“Then what did you build?”
“A protection system.”
“For whom?”
“My children.”
“And grandchildren.”
“The system was designed to recognize members of the bloodline.”
“And protect them.”
“Your grandfather changed it.”
“How?”
“He made it conditional.”
“Conditional on what?”
“Power.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“He turned protection into control.”
“Yes.”
“And the trust became an empire.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the servers.
“Can it be destroyed?”
His grandmother nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
She looked at Maya.
“Through her.”
Maya froze.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you're the only one who can rewrite the system without triggering the biological fail-safe.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“What fail-safe?”
His grandmother looked at him.
“If the system is destroyed incorrectly…”
She paused.
“…every implanted Moretti device will shut down.”
Adrian's face went pale.
“Mine.”
“Yes.”
“Who else?”
“Anyone carrying the implant.”
Adrian understood.
His entire security organization.
Dozens of men.
Maybe hundreds.
“All of them.”
“Yes.”
Maya whispered:
“Then we can't destroy it.”
Her grandmother nodded.
“Not yet.”
A metallic click came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Victor stood there.
Two armed men beside him.
Adrian raised his weapon.
Victor smiled.
“You really are a family reunion.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You're finished.”
Victor laughed.
“No.”
He pointed toward Maya.
“She is.”
Adrian's expression changed.
Victor continued.
“The system recognizes her as trustee.”
“Which means she can authorize the final transfer.”
Adrian stared.
“Transfer to what?”
Victor smiled.
“To me.”
Maya stepped backward.
“No.”
Victor raised his gun.
“Then Lily dies.”
Adrian's blood turned cold.
“Where is she?”
Victor smiled.
“You know where.”
Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
Lily's voice came through.
“Daddy?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Lily.”
“I'm scared.”
“Where are you?”
She whispered:
“I don't know.”
Victor took the phone.
“You have ten minutes.”
Adrian's voice became ice.
“If you touch her—”
“You'll what?”
Adrian stared.
Victor smiled.
“You'll kill me?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
Victor leaned closer.
“Who saves your daughter?”
Adrian said nothing.
Victor hung up.
Maya turned toward Adrian.
“We need to move.”
Adrian nodded.
“Find Lily.”
Cassian stepped forward.
“I know where she is.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Where?”
“The old chapel.”
Adrian froze.
“The chapel?”
“Underneath it.”
“How?”
“There's a tunnel.”
Victor's men raised their weapons.
Cassian moved faster.
He struck one man's wrist.
The gun fell.
Adrian fired.
The second man dropped.
Victor ran.
Adrian chased him.
“Adrian!”
Maya shouted.
He ignored her.
Victor disappeared through a side door.
Adrian followed.
They entered a narrow corridor.
Victor slammed a steel door behind him.
Adrian kicked it open.
Nothing.
He looked around.
A hidden panel opened.
Victor's voice came through the speakers.
“You're still chasing me.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Come out.”
“You haven't learned.”
“What?”
“I'm not your enemy.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“I protected her.”
“You killed people.”
“So did your family.”
“You murdered innocent children.”
Victor went silent.
Then:
“No.”
Adrian froze.
Victor continued.
“I saved them.”
“What?”
“The children you believe died…”
Victor's voice became quieter.
“…some of them survived.”
Adrian stopped.
“Where?”
“You'll see.”
The speaker went silent.
The old chapel stood three miles away.
Abandoned.
Broken.
Covered in snow.
Adrian and the others arrived within minutes.
Vincent was waiting.
“Boss.”
“Lily?”
“Inside.”
Adrian ran.
They entered the chapel.
A small voice called out.
“Daddy!”
Adrian turned.
Lily ran toward him.
He dropped to his knees.
She threw herself into his arms.
He held her tightly.
“I've got you.”
“I knew you'd come.”
Adrian kissed her hair.
“Always.”
Maya hugged them both.
Anna stood nearby.
She was crying.
Clara watched silently.
Then Lily looked at her.
“Are you Aunt Clara?”
Clara nodded.
Lily smiled.
“Daddy told me about you.”
Adrian froze.
“I didn't.”
Lily frowned.
“Then how do I know?”
Everyone became silent.
Lily pointed toward the wall.
A child's drawing was taped there.
Four people.
A man.
A woman.
A little girl.
And another woman.
Adrian stared.
“What is that?”
Lily whispered:
“I drew it last night.”
Maya looked at the picture.
“You've never seen Clara.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why did you draw her?”
Lily shrugged.
“I don't know.”
Clara stepped closer.
Her face became pale.
“She can see the bloodline.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Clara whispered:
“She remembers things we don't.”
Suddenly the chapel doors slammed shut.
Vincent spun.
“Trap.”
The lights went out.
A projector turned on.
Victor appeared.
But this time, behind him were dozens of children.
Alive.
Healthy.
Older.
Adrian stared.
“No…”
Maya covered her mouth.
The children stood in a room.
Each wore a small identification bracelet.
Subject One.
Subject Two.
Subject Three.
Subject Four.
And more.
Victor smiled.
“You were told they died.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“Where are they?”
“Safe.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather wanted them dead.”
“Then why save them?”
Victor looked toward the camera.
“Because someone had to.”
Adrian stared.
“Who?”
Victor's expression changed.
“Your grandmother.”
The old woman stepped toward the screen.
Victor smiled.
“She saved them all.”
Adrian looked at his grandmother.
“You lied.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I hid them.”
“Why?”
“Because if your grandfather found them…”
She couldn't finish.
Maya understood.
“He would have killed them.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
Hundreds of lives.
Children who had been erased from history.
People who had grown up hidden.
The Moretti family's darkest secret wasn't death.
It was survival.
Victor appeared again.
“You want to destroy the trust?”
Adrian said nothing.
“Then you need the survivors.”
“Why?”
“Because they are the original carriers.”
Maya stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
Victor smiled.
“The same thing your grandmother wanted.”
“What?”
“A world where nobody controls the bloodline.”
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“Then why are you fighting us?”
“Because your family still owns the key.”
Maya looked at Adrian.
“What key?”
Victor answered:
“Lily.”
Adrian immediately pulled her closer.
“No.”
Victor nodded.
“Exactly.”
The screen went black.
Then another message appeared.
THE FINAL CEREMONY BEGINS AT MIDNIGHT.
BRING THE GIRL.
Adrian stared.
“Where?”
A location appeared.
An abandoned hospital in Manhattan.
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“We're not going.”
She stared.
“What?”
“We're not taking Lily.”
“Then what?”
“We end this without her.”
His grandmother looked at him.
“That's impossible.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the screen.
“We've spent our whole lives believing the system controls us.”
He looked at Maya.
“It doesn't.”
Then Lily spoke.
“What if it does?”
Everyone turned.
The little girl stared at the screen.
Her eyes were strangely calm.
“What if it has been waiting for me?”
Adrian knelt.
“No.”
Lily touched his face.
“Daddy.”
“You don't have to save us.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you saying this?”
“Because Grandma told me something.”
Adrian looked toward his grandmother.
“What?”
Lily smiled.
“She said the system can't control someone who doesn't fear losing it.”
Adrian slowly turned toward the old woman.
She smiled.
“For once…”
“…your daughter understood faster than you.”
At midnight, Adrian stood outside the abandoned hospital.
Maya beside him.
Vincent behind them.
Anna and Clara nearby.
Lily remained safely hidden with Sarah.
Adrian looked at the building.
“We go in.”
Maya nodded.
“What happens if Victor is waiting?”
Adrian checked his weapon.
“He is.”
“What happens if Cassian betrays us?”
“He might.”
“What happens if your grandmother is wrong?”
Adrian looked at her.
“She might be.”
Maya sighed.
“You're very reassuring.”
He smiled.
“I've never been good at that.”
She reached for his hand.
“Then don't be.”
He looked at her.
“Be honest.”
Adrian squeezed her hand.
“I'm terrified.”
Maya nodded.
“So am I.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
“At least we're afraid together.”
They entered the hospital.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
Adrian immediately knew.
“Trap.”
The doors locked behind them.
Red lights came on.
A voice echoed.
Victor.
“Welcome.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Where's Lily?”
Victor laughed.
“You brought the wrong daughter.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
Victor's voice continued.
“The final subject isn't Lily.”
Adrian's blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
Silence.
The lights illuminated Anna.
She stood alone at the end of the corridor.
Victor whispered:
“Subject Four.”
Anna looked at Adrian.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
“Knew what?”
“That this was always about me.”
A screen appeared behind her.
Her complete medical file.
SUBJECT FOUR
ORIGINAL DESIGNATION: TERMINUS
Adrian stared.
“What does Terminus mean?”
Anna whispered:
“The end.”
Maya looked at her.
“You were designed to destroy the system.”
Anna nodded.
“But that's not all.”
She looked at Adrian.
“I was designed to destroy the bloodline.”
Adrian's face went pale.
“Who created you?”
Anna looked toward the ceiling.
“Your grandfather.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew one day someone would try to destroy his empire.”
“And he wanted a weapon.”
Anna nodded.
“He made me.”
A door opened behind her.
Cassian stepped out.
“No.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
Cassian shook his head.
“I didn't make her.”
“Then who did?”
Cassian looked at Anna.
“Your father.”
Adrian froze.
“My father?”
Cassian nodded.
“Marcus.”
Adrian's eyes widened.
“The man who raised me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew the empire would eventually destroy all of you.”
Adrian stared.
“So Anna was his insurance.”
“No.”
Cassian's voice softened.
“She was his daughter.”
Anna began crying.
“He loved me.”
Cassian nodded.
“And when he died, he made me promise to protect you.”
Adrian looked at Anna.
“I'm sorry.”
She shook her head.
“Don't be.”
Then the hospital alarms began.
WARNING.
BLOODLINE TERMINUS ACTIVATED.
Anna's body stiffened.
Her eyes closed.
Maya rushed toward her.
“Anna!”
Adrian grabbed her.
“Don't touch her!”
Anna screamed.
Every light exploded.
The hospital shook.
A massive door opened at the end of the corridor.
Behind it stood dozens of survivors.
The children who had never died.
All grown now.
All staring at Adrian.
Then one woman stepped forward.
Adrian recognized her.
His grandmother.
She whispered:
“It's time.”
Adrian looked at Anna.
Then Maya.
Then the survivors.
Then the door.
For thirty-four years, his family had been running from the truth.
Now the truth was standing directly in front of him.
And it wasn't asking him to fight.
It was asking him to choose.
Power—
or freedom.
Blood—
or family.
The empire—
or the people it had destroyed.
Adrian lowered his weapon.
“I choose them.”
Victor's voice came through the speakers.
“Then prove it.”
May you like
The lights went black.
And Anna screamed.
