CHAPTER 11 SUBJECT ZERO

For three full seconds, Adrian Moretti couldn't move.

The photograph remained frozen on the hospital screens.

A woman with dark hair.

Pale skin.

Blue eyes.

A face disturbingly similar to Maya's.

But older.

Harder.

Colder.

Beneath her photograph, the words continued blinking.

SUBJECT ZERO IS AWAKE.

Maya stared at the screen.

“Who is that?”

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked at Elena.

The doctor had gone completely still.

“You know her.”

Elena's eyes closed.

Adrian's voice hardened.

“Elena.”

Nothing.

“Look at me.”

She opened her eyes.

“Who is Subject Zero?”

Elena swallowed.

“The first.”

“The first what?”

“The first child.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Child?”

Elena nodded.

“Before you.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Before Maya.”

“Before Anna.”

“Yes.”

Adrian's face became expressionless.

“My father had another child?”

Elena shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

Elena whispered:

“Your grandfather created her.”

Silence filled the room.

Adrian looked back at the photograph.

“Created?”

“She was the original experiment.”

Maya's voice trembled.

“And she survived?”

“Yes.”

“How old is she?”

Elena hesitated.

“Thirty-eight.”

Adrian stared.

Eight years older than him.

“That woman is older than me.”

“Yes.”

“How can she be my father's experiment?”

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Because she wasn't created from your father.”

Adrian frowned.

“Whose DNA?”

Elena looked at him.

“Your grandmother's.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“My grandmother died before I was born.”

“I know.”

“So how?”

“Your grandfather preserved her genetic material.”

Adrian looked at the screen again.

The woman stared back at him.

“Why?”

Elena's expression became painful.

“Because she had something none of you had.”

“What?”

“Her heart never developed the mutation.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“She was immune?”

“Yes.”

“Then why create Maya and Anna?”

“Because your grandfather wanted to reproduce that immunity.”

“And failed.”

“Repeatedly.”

Adrian looked toward Maya.

“How many?”

Elena hesitated.

“Twenty-six.”

Maya's face went pale.

“Twenty-six children?”

“Twenty-six attempts.”

“Where are they?”

Elena looked away.

Maya understood.

“Oh God.”

Adrian's voice became dangerously quiet.

“What happened to them?”

Elena whispered:

“They died.”

The hospital lights flickered.

Then every screen went black.

A single sentence appeared.

I DIDN'T.

Adrian stared.

Another line appeared.

THEY DID.

Then:

YOUR FAMILY DID.

Maya stepped closer.

“She's talking to us.”

Adrian nodded.

A video began playing.

The woman appeared.

She sat in a dark room.

No guards.

No weapons.

No fear.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Who are you?”

She smiled.

“You know my name.”

“I don't.”

“You know the name your grandfather gave me.”

Adrian said nothing.

She leaned closer.

“Evelyn.”

Adrian froze.

Maya's eyes widened.

“Elena…”

The woman smiled.

“My name is Evelyn.”

Adrian stared.

“My mother's name was Evelyn.”

“No.”

The woman's voice became soft.

“Your mother is Evelyn Moretti.”

She touched her chest.

“I am Evelyn Zero.”

Adrian felt something inside him crack.

“That's impossible.”

“Is it?”

“You're saying my grandmother…”

“Was my mother.”

Adrian shook his head.

“My grandmother had one child.”

“Your grandfather told you that.”

“My mother.”

“Your grandfather lied.”

Adrian's hands clenched.

“Why?”

“Because I was inconvenient.”

Maya whispered:

“Inconvenient?”

Evelyn Zero looked at her.

“You were supposed to be the cure.”

Maya froze.

“What?”

“You.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“You were created to carry what I carried.”

Maya shook her head.

“I wasn't created.”

“No.”

Evelyn Zero's expression softened.

“You were born.”

“There's a difference.”

“A very important one.”

The screen went black.

Then another message appeared.

COME TO THE OBSERVATORY.

ALONE.

Adrian stared.

Vincent entered the room.

“We found them.”

Adrian turned.

“Who?”

“Sarah and Lily.”

Maya stepped forward.

“Where?”

Vincent looked at Adrian.

“Thirty miles north.”

“Are they alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then let's go.”

Vincent hesitated.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Sarah isn't alone.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Who is with her?”

Vincent handed him a photograph.

Adrian looked.

Sarah stood beside Lily.

Behind them was a woman.

The same woman from the screen.

Subject Zero.

Adrian's expression changed.

“She has Lily.”

Vincent nodded.

“And she wants you.”

The drive north took forty minutes.

Adrian sat in silence.

Maya beside him.

Vincent drove.

Gabriel sat in front.

Nobody spoke for nearly twenty minutes.

Then Maya broke the silence.

“Do you think she hates us?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Who?”

“Evelyn.”

He thought about it.

“Yes.”

Maya looked down.

“Why?”

“Because she believes our existence cost her life.”

“But that isn't our fault.”

“No.”

Adrian reached for her hand.

“None of this is your fault.”

Maya squeezed his fingers.

“What if she hurts Lily?”

“She won't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she could have killed her already.”

Maya looked at him.

“You trust her?”

“No.”

“Then why are you calm?”

Adrian stared through the windshield.

“I'm not.”

The observatory stood on a hill overlooking the Hudson.

It had been abandoned for years.

The dome was broken.

Snow covered the stairs.

Adrian walked toward the entrance.

Vincent followed.

“Boss.”

Adrian stopped.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“Vincent.”

“You said come alone.”

“I know.”

“Then why am I here?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Because if I don't come back…”

Vincent shook his head.

“Don't.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Just in case.”

Vincent grabbed his shoulder.

“You're coming back.”

Adrian nodded.

“I intend to.”

Then he entered.

The observatory was dark.

A single light burned at the center.

Under it stood Evelyn Zero.

Sarah sat on a chair.

Lily beside her.

Both unharmed.

Adrian stopped.

“Lily.”

The little girl looked up.

“Daddy.”

Adrian's chest tightened.

He took one step.

Evelyn raised a hand.

“Don't.”

Adrian stopped.

“Let them go.”

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked behind him.

“Your people are outside.”

“I said alone.”

She smiled.

“You always were a bad liar.”

Adrian stared.

“You know me.”

“I've watched you your entire life.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the only person who could understand what happened to me.”

Adrian frowned.

“I was a child.”

“So was I.”

The words hit him.

Evelyn walked toward the window.

“When I was six, your grandfather put me inside a room.”

Adrian listened.

“He told me I was special.”

She laughed bitterly.

“I believed him.”

She looked at Maya.

“Then they took blood from me.”

Maya's face tightened.

“Every week.”

Evelyn continued.

“Every month.”

“Every year.”

“They tested my heart.”

“Changed my medications.”

“Changed my diet.”

“Changed my environment.”

“They wanted to understand why I didn't carry the family disease.”

Adrian said:

“And did they?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my immunity wasn't genetic.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then what was it?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“It was acquired.”

“How?”

She smiled.

“Trauma.”

Silence.

“My heart learned to survive because it had no choice.”

Adrian stared.

Evelyn continued.

“Your grandfather spent millions trying to reproduce something he didn't understand.”

“Then he created Maya.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Maya was created by the scientists who inherited his work.”

Adrian looked at Maya.

“She wasn't the cure.”

“She was the next attempt.”

“And Anna?”

“A copy.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“And Lily?”

Evelyn looked at the little girl.

“She is natural.”

Adrian breathed again.

“Then why is she involved?”

“Because Lily carries the final combination.”

Adrian froze.

“What combination?”

Evelyn pointed toward him.

“Your mutation.”

Then Maya.

“Her immune response.”

Then Lily.

“And the natural genetic correction.”

Adrian understood.

“The three of us.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn nodded.

“The trust doesn't need one person.”

“It needs all three.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Daddy?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I'm here.”

“Why does Aunt Evelyn know so much about us?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Because I was there before any of you.”

Lily frowned.

“Were you lonely?”

Evelyn froze.

The question seemed to hit harder than any weapon.

“Yes.”

Lily looked at her.

“Me too.”

Evelyn's face changed.

“You?”

“When Daddy wasn't there.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You see?”

Adrian opened his eyes.

“What?”

“That's why I chose her.”

“You chose Lily?”

“Yes.”

“To what?”

“To prove something.”

Evelyn walked toward the control panel.

“I wanted to know if love could interrupt the system.”

Adrian stared.

“What system?”

“The trust.”

She pressed a button.

The floor opened.

A hidden terminal rose from beneath the ground.

Screens lit up.

Financial records.

Genetic sequences.

Names.

Thousands of them.

Adrian recognized some.

Senators.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Business leaders.

Foreign officials.

The entire architecture of corruption.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your family built this.”

Adrian stared.

“And now?”

“Now we destroy it.”

“How?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“With your heart.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“If you refuse, Victor will kill Lily.”

“Where is Victor?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Inside the system.”

“What does that mean?”

“He owns the final access key.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“So this was never about the money.”

“No.”

“What does he want?”

“Freedom.”

Adrian frowned.

“From what?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“From the Moretti family.”

Suddenly every screen turned red.

ACCESS BREACH.

Evelyn's face changed.

“No.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“What?”

“He found us.”

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at the entrance.

“Victor.”

The doors exploded.

Gunfire erupted.

Adrian grabbed Lily.

Maya grabbed Sarah.

Evelyn moved toward the terminal.

Vincent and his men stormed inside.

“DOWN!”

Bullets tore through the walls.

Adrian shielded Lily with his body.

Maya pulled Sarah behind a concrete pillar.

Anna suddenly appeared through the side entrance.

“Dad!”

Adrian turned.

“Anna?”

She ran toward them.

A bullet struck the wall beside her.

Adrian grabbed her.

“Get down!”

Anna looked at Evelyn.

“You.”

Evelyn stared back.

For the first time, fear crossed her face.

“Anna…”

Anna whispered:

“You're the one who made me.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You watched them take my blood.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to stop them.”

“You didn't.”

“I was six.”

Anna froze.

Evelyn continued:

“I was six years old.”

Silence.

Anna's expression softened.

“You're not my mother.”

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Your sister.”

Anna stopped breathing.

Adrian stared.

Maya stared.

Lily looked confused.

Then the building shook.

A voice echoed through the speakers.

Victor.

“You finally found each other.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Come out.”

Victor laughed.

“You still think this is a confrontation.”

He pressed a button.

The terminal activated.

Every screen displayed one word.

ACTIVATION.

Adrian's heart suddenly stopped.

He collapsed.

“DAD!”

Maya caught him.

His body went limp.

The monitor on his wrist showed no pulse.

Lily screamed.

“Daddy!”

Maya began crying.

“No.”

Anna ran toward him.

“Get a defibrillator!”

Gabriel shouted:

“Move!”

Vincent cleared the area.

Evelyn stared at the terminal.

Then understood.

“Victor isn't activating the trust.”

Adrian's body jerked.

He gasped.

His heart restarted.

Maya held him.

“What happened?”

Evelyn whispered:

“He's testing the system.”

Adrian struggled to breathe.

“What…”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your heart is the key.”

Adrian forced himself upright.

“Then destroy it.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the only person who can shut it down…”

She looked at Maya.

“…is your daughter.”

Maya froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Evelyn pointed toward the terminal.

“Your genetic signature.”

Maya stared.

“What do I have to do?”

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

“You have to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Your father's life…”

She looked toward Lily.

“…or the destruction of the trust.”

Maya's face went white.

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You don't understand.”

“I won't let her choose.”

“You may not have a choice.”

The countdown appeared.

00:59:59

One hour.

Maya stared at the screen.

Then at Adrian.

Then Lily.

Then Anna.

And finally Evelyn.

“There's another option.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Maya stepped toward the terminal.

“We destroy the system without killing him.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Impossible.”

Maya looked at her.

“Then you haven't been looking hard enough.”

She placed her hand against the scanner.

The machine began to glow.

DNA ACCEPTED.

Evelyn stepped backward.

“What are you doing?”

Maya looked at her.

“Ending this.”

The screen flashed.

Then every alarm in the observatory began screaming.

Victor's voice disappeared.

The countdown stopped.

And beneath the terminal appeared a new message.

THIRD BLOODLINE CONFIRMED.

Adrian stared.

“Third?”

Maya turned.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Dad…”

The terminal displayed a final name.

LILY MORETTI — SUBJECT THREE.

Adrian's blood ran cold.

Then another line appeared.

SUBJECT ZERO — MATERNAL SOURCE.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.”

A final line appeared.

SUBJECT ONE — ADRIAN MORETTI.

Then:

SUBJECT TWO — MAYA TORRES.

Adrian looked at the screen.

The truth was finally complete.

They weren't three separate pieces.

They were three generations of the same experiment.

And Lily—

his innocent little daughter—

had been the final result.

The lights went out.

A single gunshot echoed from somewhere inside the building.

Then Victor's voice returned.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Now you finally understand why I never tried to kill you.”

Adrian looked into the darkness.

“Why?”

Victor answered:

“Because I needed you alive long enough to create her.”

Adrian's face went pale.

Lily stared at him.

“Daddy?”

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

May you like

And for the first time, he realized the enemy hadn't been hunting his family.

They had been waiting for it to become complete.
