CHAPTER 12 THE TRUTH BENEATH THE BLOODLINE

The gunshot echoed through the observatory.
Adrian pulled Lily against his chest.
“Everyone down!”
Vincent's men raised their weapons.
Nothing.
No second shot.
No footsteps.
Only the wind moving through the broken dome above them.
Maya looked toward the darkness.
“Where did it come from?”
Gabriel checked the terminal.
“Not here.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“The sound came through the speakers.”
Victor's voice suddenly returned.
“You're learning.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Show yourself.”
“No.”
“Afraid?”
Victor laughed.
“Of you?”
A pause.
“Never.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“Then tell me why you created Lily.”
Silence.
Victor finally answered.
“I didn't.”
Adrian froze.
“Then who did?”
Victor's voice became colder.
“You did.”
Maya looked at Adrian.
“No.”
Victor continued.
“Not intentionally.”
“You were selected because of your genetic profile.”
“Your mother was selected because of hers.”
“And Maya…”
The screen displayed Maya's face.
“…was selected because she survived.”
Maya stared.
“Survived what?”
Victor didn't answer.
Evelyn did.
“Me.”
Maya turned.
“What?”
Evelyn stepped toward her.
“When the researchers realized my immunity couldn't be reproduced naturally, they needed someone who could inherit the response.”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't understand.”
“They took my genetic material.”
“And used it in you.”
Maya's face became pale.
“So I'm your…”
“Genetic descendant.”
“But not your daughter.”
“No.”
Maya looked at Adrian.
“Then what am I?”
Adrian stepped beside her.
“My daughter.”
Victor laughed.
“Blood doesn't make family.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“Love does.”
For the first time, Victor said nothing.
A siren sounded outside.
Vincent checked his phone.
“Police.”
Adrian frowned.
“Who called them?”
Gabriel looked at the terminal.
“I did.”
Adrian stared.
“You called the police?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because this is bigger than us.”
Adrian looked toward the screens.
The names.
The accounts.
The genetic files.
The evidence.
Gabriel continued:
“If we die here, the system disappears.”
“And?”
“If the police secure the servers, the information survives.”
Adrian nodded.
“Good.”
Maya looked at him.
“Are we leaving?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor wants us to run.”
He looked toward the terminal.
“And I want to know what he's afraid of.”
The screen flickered.
A new video appeared.
Victor sat behind a desk.
But this time, someone stood behind him.
A woman.
Adrian recognized her immediately.
His mother.
Evelyn Moretti.
Alive.
Adrian's body went rigid.
“MOM?”
Maya stared.
“That can't be…”
Victor turned toward the woman.
“Tell him.”
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“Adrian.”
His breath caught.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“Not far.”
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father would have killed you.”
Adrian's voice became bitter.
“He almost did anyway.”
“I know.”
“You knew about Maya.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Anna.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lily.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“No.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“I didn't know about Lily.”
Victor smiled.
“That is the truth.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Then who created her?”
Victor answered:
“Nature.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
“Lily was never part of the experiment.”
Victor leaned forward.
“She was the accident.”
Maya whispered:
“An accident?”
“Yes.”
Victor continued.
“Your mother and I spent years trying to reproduce the genetic response.”
“We failed.”
“Then Adrian disappeared.”
“And Maya appeared.”
“And suddenly, the impossible happened.”
Adrian looked at Maya.
“You became pregnant.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
Victor smiled.
“You were already carrying Lily before anyone knew.”
Adrian stared.
“But…”
He couldn't finish.
Victor did.
“Lily wasn't created in a laboratory.”
“She was born naturally.”
“That's why she's different.”
“She carries all three genetic signatures without the artificial modifications.”
Adrian looked toward Lily.
The little girl was asleep in Sarah's arms.
“So she's the cure.”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Then what is she?”
“The proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Victor leaned toward the camera.
“That your family never needed the trust.”
Adrian went silent.
“The trust was created to protect a lie.”
“What lie?”
Victor smiled.
“That your family could control death.”
Evelyn Moretti spoke again.
“Your grandfather became obsessed after your grandmother died.”
Adrian listened.
“He believed the heart was the weakness.”
“He wanted to eliminate that weakness.”
“He built the trust.”
“Not for money.”
“But as a research fund.”
Adrian frowned.
“How did it become four hundred eighty billion?”
“Because every experiment required funding.”
“And every success generated more.”
“Businesses were acquired.”
“Banks were purchased.”
“Political influence was bought.”
“Eventually the research became an empire.”
Adrian stared.
“So the empire was built around one experiment.”
“Yes.”
“And the experiment failed.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“It succeeded.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“You survived.”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't feel like a success.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“Neither did I.”
She looked at Adrian.
“And then Lily was born.”
Adrian's eyes softened.
“She was the first completely natural success.”
Victor interrupted.
“And that is why everyone wants her.”
Adrian stepped toward the camera.
“Who wants her?”
Victor smiled.
“Everyone who understands what she represents.”
“Names.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Control.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Control over what?”
“The disease.”
Victor's eyes narrowed.
“Lily's DNA could potentially eliminate the mutation.”
Adrian understood.
“Worldwide.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why governments are interested.”
“Some.”
“Corporations.”
“Many.”
“Pharmaceutical companies.”
“Absolutely.”
“And you?”
Victor smiled.
“I want it destroyed.”
Adrian stared.
“Why?”
“Because if Lily's genetic sequence becomes public, your family becomes worthless.”
Adrian frowned.
“Worthless?”
“Your empire was built on scarcity.”
Victor looked at the camera.
“If everyone can live without the mutation, the Moretti Trust has no purpose.”
Adrian understood.
The empire wasn't about money.
It was about control of a biological secret.
Maya walked toward the terminal.
“What happens if I destroy the trust?”
Victor smiled.
“Everything collapses.”
“Good.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Then Lily's genetic sequence is released.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“Every database.”
“Every hospital.”
“Every pharmaceutical company.”
“Every intelligence agency.”
“You destroy the trust…”
“…and you give the world the blueprint to your sister.”
Maya looked at Lily.
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Adrian stepped between Maya and the screen.
“You're bluffing.”
Victor laughed.
“Am I?”
A new screen appeared.
A file began uploading.
LILY MORETTI — GENETIC SEQUENCE
UPLOAD: 1%
Adrian's heart stopped.
“Stop it.”
Victor continued.
“Destroy the trust.”
“Or watch the world learn how to replicate your daughter.”
The percentage changed.
2%.
Maya began crying.
“What do we do?”
Adrian stared at the screen.
His mind raced.
He could destroy the trust.
Save the world from his family's corruption.
But expose Lily.
Or protect Lily—
and allow the empire to survive.
Then he remembered something.
Elena.
Her words.
The procedure.
Adrian looked toward Gabriel.
“What if the system is wrong?”
Gabriel frowned.
“What?”
“What if Lily isn't the key?”
Gabriel stared.
Adrian continued.
“What if the trust only thinks she is?”
Gabriel looked at the terminal.
His expression changed.
“Wait.”
He ran toward the computer.
“What are you doing?” Vincent asked.
“Checking the original algorithm.”
“Can you stop the upload?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
Gabriel typed rapidly.
Lines of code filled the screen.
Then he froze.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“I found it.”
“What?”
“The trust isn't reading Lily's DNA.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then what?”
“It's reading her heartbeat.”
Silence.
Maya looked at Lily.
“Her heartbeat?”
Gabriel nodded.
“The system doesn't care what she carries.”
“It cares how her heart responds.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Then the genetic key is a lie.”
“Yes.”
Victor's smile disappeared on the screen.
Adrian noticed.
“You didn't know.”
Victor stared.
Adrian smiled.
“You didn't know.”
Victor stood.
“Shut it down.”
Gabriel laughed.
“That's the first honest thing you've said tonight.”
Victor's voice became furious.
“Shut it down!”
Gabriel looked at Adrian.
“We can reverse the system.”
“How?”
“Lily's heartbeat can overwrite the activation protocol.”
Adrian stared.
“Can you do it safely?”
“I don't know.”
Maya stepped forward.
“You will.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“You trust me?”
“No.”
She looked toward Adrian.
“I trust my father.”
Adrian's expression softened.
Then the lights flickered.
A bullet shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Vincent shouted:
“Sniper!”
Another shot.
The terminal exploded.
Gabriel fell backward.
“Gabriel!”
Adrian ran to him.
Blood covered his arm.
“I'm okay.”
“Can you still work?”
Gabriel looked at the destroyed computer.
“Not from here.”
Adrian looked around.
“Then where?”
Gabriel pointed toward the floor.
“The original server.”
“Where?”
“Under the observatory.”
They moved quickly.
Vincent led the way.
Evelyn stayed behind with Sarah and Lily.
Maya followed Adrian.
Anna followed Maya.
They reached a steel door beneath the building.
Gabriel entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a massive underground chamber.
Rows of servers stretched into darkness.
Adrian stared.
“How old is this?”
“Twenty years.”
“Your grandfather built it.”
“Yes.”
“Why wasn't it destroyed?”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Because nobody knew it existed.”
Adrian stepped forward.
Then stopped.
A heartbeat echoed through the room.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Maya looked around.
“What's that?”
Gabriel stared.
“The system.”
Adrian frowned.
“It's already active.”
Gabriel checked the screen.
“Someone activated the original server.”
Adrian's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
VICTOR: TOO LATE.
Then:
WELCOME HOME, ADRIAN.
The lights came on.
Every server activated.
A massive display appeared.
BLOODLINE PROTOCOL INITIATED.
Adrian's chest tightened.
His heart monitor began screaming.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
Maya grabbed his arm.
“Dad?”
He couldn't breathe.
His knees buckled.
“Get away from me.”
“No.”
“Maya…”
“No!”
Gabriel shouted:
“Don't touch him!”
Maya stopped.
“What?”
“The system is reading his heartbeat.”
Adrian collapsed.
His pulse disappeared.
Maya screamed.
“DAD!”
Anna grabbed her.
“Wait!”
Maya shook her off.
“He's dying!”
Gabriel looked at the screen.
Then froze.
“It's not killing him.”
“What?”
“It's measuring him.”
The screen displayed:
SUBJECT ONE — FAILURE
Then:
SUBJECT TWO — COMPATIBLE
Maya stared.
“Me?”
Gabriel nodded.
The system scanned her.
SUBJECT TWO — PARTIAL SUCCESS
Then Lily's heartbeat appeared.
SUBJECT THREE — PERFECT MATCH
Everyone froze.
Adrian's heart suddenly restarted.
He gasped.
Maya cried.
“Dad!”
He looked at her.
“Lily…”
Gabriel stared at the screen.
The truth was now undeniable.
Lily wasn't merely the final key.
She was the only perfect match.
But another line appeared.
ACTIVATION REQUIRES SUBJECT ZERO.
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
She stood at the entrance.
Her face was pale.
Adrian stared.
“Why does it need you?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
Maya stepped toward her.
“Mom?”
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“I was afraid this day would come.”
Adrian slowly stood.
“What are you?”
Evelyn whispered:
“The first heart.”
The servers began screaming.
The screen changed.
SUBJECT ZERO — CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.
Then another message appeared.
ALL FOUR BLOODLINES REQUIRED.
Adrian looked around.
“Four?”
Gabriel stared at the data.
“Your mother.”
“Maya.”
“Lily.”
“And…”
He stopped.
Adrian's face hardened.
“And who?”
Gabriel looked toward Anna.
Anna froze.
“No.”
The terminal displayed her name.
SUBJECT FOUR — ARTIFICIAL CARRIER
Anna stepped backward.
“I can't be.”
Evelyn walked toward her.
“You are.”
Anna shook her head.
“You said I was a copy.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because I was protecting you.”
Anna stared.
“From what?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“From yourself.”
The servers began counting down.
10

8
Adrian looked at Maya.
“Get Lily out.”
Maya grabbed her sister.
“What about you?”
“I'll stop it.”
“You can't.”
“I have to.”
The countdown continued.
7
6
5
Evelyn stepped toward the terminal.
“Adrian.”
He turned.
“What?”
She smiled.
“You always wanted to know why I disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't disappear.”
She placed her hand against the scanner.
“I was imprisoned.”
The system recognized her.
SUBJECT ZERO CONFIRMED.
The entire underground chamber shook.
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“And now…”
Her voice broke.
“…they're finally going to learn why your grandfather was afraid of me.”

2
Adrian raised his weapon.
“What are you about to do?”
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“End the Moretti Trust.”

The system activated.
Every server exploded with light.
And somewhere above them—
May you like
Victor whispered:
“Finally.”
