The underground chamber exploded with light.
For one impossible second, Adrian couldn't see anything.
There was only white.
Then sound returned.
A deep mechanical roar.

Adrian opened his eyes.

Adrian stared.
“Mom!”
Evelyn turned.
“Get them out.”
Adrian moved toward her.
“No.”
“Adrian.”
“I said no.”
“The system is going to collapse.”
“Then we collapse with it.”
She shook her head.
“You still haven't learned.”
“What?”
“Being a father means knowing when to let someone sacrifice themselves.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“No.”
He reached for her.
Evelyn pulled her hand away.

Gabriel looked up.
“Oh, no.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“The system is purging itself.”
“Meaning?”

Adrian looked toward the screens.

He looked at Gabriel.
“What is that?”

Adrian looked toward the stairs.
Gunfire continued.
“Then you have two.”
Gabriel stared.
“Two minutes?”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Make them count.”
Vincent fired twice.
Two men fell.

“Boss!”
Adrian turned.
“Get everyone out.”
Vincent shook his head.
“Not without you.”
“That's an order.”
“I don't care.”
Adrian stared at him.
Vincent lowered his weapon.
“You've given me that order for eleven years.”
“And?”
“I've ignored it for eleven years.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“Fair.”
Vincent turned toward Maya.
“Take Lily.”
Maya nodded.
Anna grabbed Sarah's hand.
The group moved toward the emergency exit.
Adrian stayed behind.
Evelyn watched him.
“You're just like him.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Who?”
“Your grandfather.”
“I hope not.”
“He thought sacrifice made him powerful.”
“And you?”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“I learned it makes you tired.”
She stepped closer.
“You have spent your entire life carrying the weight of men who came before you.”
Adrian said nothing.
“You inherited their empire.”
“Their enemies.”
“Their blood.”

She touched his cheek.
“You don't have to inherit their sins.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I already did.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You inherited their choices.”
A pause.
“But you can choose differently.”
Gabriel shouted from the terminal.
“Seventy percent!”
Adrian turned.
“Keep going.”
A bullet struck the wall.
Vincent ducked.
“More incoming!”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Then stop them.”
Vincent smiled.
“Finally.”
He stepped forward.
The gunfire intensified.
Adrian felt his heart begin to race.
Too fast.
Too hard.
He touched his chest.
Not now.
Not again.
The room blurred.
Maya noticed.
“Dad!”
Adrian shook his head.
“Go.”
“You're having another episode.”
“I said go.”
Maya stepped toward him.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Maya.”
“You promised me.”
He froze.
“What?”
“You promised you weren't going to disappear.”
Her voice cracked.
“You promised.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I remember.”
“Then don't make me lose you again.”
Adrian stared at her.
For three years, Maya had believed she was abandoned.

He walked toward her.
He hugged her.

Adrian released Maya.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

Lily walked forward.
“Daddy?”
Adrian's heart broke.
“Stay there.”
“But it wants me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
Lily looked at him.

“You always tell me to be brave.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“Then let me help.”
Maya covered her mouth.
Adrian crouched.
He looked directly into Lily's eyes.
“You don't have to save anybody.”
“But you said we're family.”
“We are.”
“Then families help each other.”
Adrian felt tears burn his eyes.
He hugged her.
“You're too young for this.”
Lily whispered:
“Maybe.”
Then she kissed his cheek.
“But I'm still your daughter.”
Adrian couldn't speak.
Evelyn stepped toward the terminal.
“It's time.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You're not dying.”
“I'm not afraid.”
“I am.”
She smiled.
“You should be.”
“Why?”
“Because fear is what tells us something matters.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You matter.”
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“I know.”
She placed her hand on the scanner.
SUBJECT ZERO CONFIRMED.
Maya stepped forward.
SUBJECT TWO CONFIRMED.
Anna hesitated.
Evelyn looked at her.
“You don't have to.”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“I spent my whole life being told I wasn't real.”
She placed her hand on the scanner.
“I want to choose who I am.”

Adrian stared.
Then Maya placed Lily's hand against the final scanner.
SUBJECT THREE CONFIRMED.
The entire chamber went silent.
Then:

The countdown began.

“Get out.”
She shook her head.
“No.”

“Can she take it?”
“Maybe.”
“What happens to Lily?”

Adrian looked at Maya.
“Would you do it?”

She looked at Lily.

Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
Maya stared.

“Dad…”

“I know.”

Maya cried out.
Adrian held her.

Evelyn watched.

Adrian stared.
