Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT WE ALMOST LOST BOTH

At twenty-nine weeks and five days, Emily woke bleeding.
There was no hesitation.
Ambulance.
Hospital.
Emergency assessment.
The baby’s heart rate dipped.
Recovered.
Dipped again.
Emily’s face turned white.
“Ryan.”
“I’m here.”
The obstetric team worked quickly.
Dr. Shah spoke to us.
“There are concerns about the placenta.”
Emily squeezed my hand.
“Is she coming today?”
“Possibly.”
“I’m not thirty-two weeks.”
“I know.”
The next hour lasted a year.
Then Emily’s blood pressure dropped.
The baby’s heart pattern worsened.
The decision was made.
Emergency delivery.
They rolled Emily toward the operating room.
I walked beside her until the doors.
She grabbed my wrist.
“Ryan.”
“Yes?”
“If you have to choose—”
“No.”
Her eyes filled with panic.
“Listen to me.”
I bent close.
“I want you.”
She froze.
“I want her too.”
My voice broke.
“God, Emily, I want her more than anything.”
“But if this world forces somebody in that room to make an impossible decision, your life matters.”
She sobbed.
“You hear me?”
“Yes.”
“You matter outside being her mother.”
“Yes.”
“You matter if she lives.”
“You matter if she doesn’t.”
Emily nodded.
Then they took her away.
Our daughter was born at 11:42 p.m.
Three pounds, two ounces.
She cried once.
A tiny, furious sound.
Then NICU staff surrounded her.
I saw her for six seconds before she disappeared.
Emily remained in surgery.
I stood between two hallways.
One leading toward my daughter.
One toward the woman I still loved.
For years I had believed every crisis had one correct direction.
That night there were two.
A nurse touched my shoulder.
“Your daughter is stable.”
“And Emily?”
“They’re still working.”
I waited.
Forty minutes.
Then Dr. Shah appeared.
“She’s stable.”
My knees gave out.
I sat directly on the floor.
The doctor smiled.
“Both of them are stable.”
May you like
Both.
The most beautiful word I had ever heard.
