Chapter 11 - MY MOTHER’S CALL

The betrayal came from someone I had not expected.
My mother.
Susan Mercer had always loved Emily.
Or so I thought.
Nora discovered the truth.
Emily had called Susan after I ignored her second call.
She needed to know whether I was okay.
Whether something had happened.
Susan told her:
“Ryan is trying to move forward.”
Then:
“Please don’t use another crisis to pull him back into a marriage that was hurting both of you.”
Emily never told me.
When I confronted my mother, she cried.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“From my pregnant wife with cancer?”
“I didn’t know about the cancer.”
“You didn’t ask.”
The irony nearly choked me.
My mother had done exactly what I had done.
Filled silence with the explanation most convenient to her.
“She sounded emotional.”
“She had just found a tumor!”
“I know that now.”
I stared at her.
“When she called, did she say she needed money?”
“No.”
“Did she ask me to come home?”
“No.”
“Did she ask you to manipulate me?”
“No.”
“Then what were you protecting me from?”
Susan could not answer.
Finally:
“Pain.”
I laughed bitterly.
“There it is.”
She looked confused.
“We all keep pretending protecting someone from pain is the same thing as loving them.”
I stood.
“You didn’t protect me.”
“You made it easier for me to abandon her.”
Susan began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
I walked away.
Not forever.
May you like
But for now.
Accountability needed room too.
