Chapter 14 - THE SECOND PERSON WHO LEFT HER

My mother was not the only one who knew.
Emily’s former primary-care physician had recommended additional testing after our second miscarriage.
A referral was placed.
Emily never attended.
I immediately assumed she had ignored it.
Then Nora found the old appointment records.
Emily had scheduled it.
The appointment fell during my deployment.
She canceled two days before.
Why?
Because I had called from overseas.
I remembered the conversation.
I had been exhausted.
Emily tried to tell me she was scared about more tests.
I told her:
“Maybe we need to stop living inside what happened.”
I had intended reassurance.
She heard instruction.
Move on.
Stop looking.
Stop hurting.
She canceled.
When she told me, I felt sick.
“If you had gone…”
“We don’t know.”
“The condition might have been found.”
“Maybe.”
“We might have—”
“Ryan.”
I stopped.
Emily looked directly at me.
“This is exactly how I tortured myself after the miscarriages.”
“But I—”
“No.”
She touched my face.
“You do not get to take my old guilt and make it yours.”
I stared.
“I said things that hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I left.”
“Yes.”
“I failed you.”
“Yes.”
Every yes hurt.
Then:
“But you did not cause two miscarriages.”
Her voice softened.
“And you did not cause my cancer.”
I began crying.
Emily continued.
“You have enough real things to answer for.”
A tiny smile.
“Stop stealing responsibility for things that aren’t yours.”
It was the strangest mercy I had ever received.
She was not erasing my failures.
May you like
She was defining them accurately.
And somehow that felt more forgiving than being told I had done nothing wrong.
